I can attest to moths' thirst for chaos as they've ruined my life at least 3 times now. They ransacked my gluten free baking flours in the pantry THROUGH THE BAGS, their caterpillars attacked my baby salad greens outside, then they ravaged my nocturnal moonflower. Once, I felt a tickle at my heart center during meditation; looked down, a moth flew out of my sports bra. Complete menaces.

After growing them together with other chep plants, I can confirm that there is no differences of happiness between growing expensive plants and cheap plants. So now I stop buying expensive plants. There's definitely some more expensive plants I am obsessed with but there's also some 5$ plants I'm obsessed with and I always try to get the baby versions of the expensive plants I love. My love for plants depends almost entirely on if the look of the plant appeals to me but some other factors are interest in growth pattern/ leaf shapes and veinstions, cool variegation patterns and honestly, I do find it super fun if you can manage to snag a "rare" plant but even then I'm only gonna get it if I can get a good deal on it. I literally got a Billietiae for $4.50 CAD and I'm JACKED about it. I think if you love a plant, get it. If you want it because other people have it, don't get it.

People volunteering in Botanical Gardens just so they can steal rare plants, or pretend to “study” Monstera in the Wild and are stupid enough to take pics of themselves ripping out Aroids in the Amazon rainforest, when they can’t prove that they’re sponsored by an academic institution or are writing appropriate botanical publications that would warrant the removal of rare species for research. Nah….they just poach away and pretend to be some hotshot “researcher.” This topic is super hot tea right now 😆

I like three dollar peasantry. I won't be shamed by that; I'm descended from generations of peasants. Like me, these plants are built to take it: disease resistant, hardy, strong, reliable, adaptable, and all that good stuff. Anyway, Lowe's had the normal variety of Aspidistra elatior out with the bedding plants this year, also a Monrovia offering. They stopped me in my tracks with their succulent sheen and I live with the regret of not buying one that day because they were all gone when I went back. I strictly grow my Caladiums and coleus outside. My Caladiums are the 50 cents/10 bulb variety at the end of season Walmart clearance. I dig the tubers up every year and they hang in my laundry room in a lingerie bag until it's time to wake up. I also add to the number when I get a good deal. I also buy my taro roots in the produce section of my grocery store, when they're on sale. That's what I plant outside, again, no shame.

Pretty much all tropical plants were once deemed rare to people outside the tropics. And a lot of "rare" plants currently are actually quite easy to propagate. In my area you can find black zz plants for example in the produce aisle of basically every single supermarket around, yet I've heard people in other areas refer to them as "rare". Even variegated alocasias, and philodendrons have begun to appear at big box stores in my area. Recently I bought two stunning Geogenanthus ciliatus at a Home depot and the look them up online to see them being sold as "rare" for four times the price as I paid.

About Caladiums. Many years ago, not in the Victorian time but way before you were born, Caladium was "IT" as the aquarium plant. Yes, they can grow submerged for about 3 months. Then you dig it out, store in almost dry soil mix until next growing cycle.
    Just sweet childhood memories.

Here in zone 7b/8a of the NC piedmont, cast iron plants are perennials, and caladiums are an amazing annual. Hearing word that there is also now a perennial rex begonia for our zone. I grow flags and irises that came from my great-grandmother - I adore their foliage but not the cloying scent. The flags looooove the perpetual wet areas of the garden.

Now that it lives near a bright window it's flourishing, it's lush, it's gorgeous. Of course though... it waited until November to flower... so I'm not gonna see any colourful blooms any time soon because they just fall without getting much sun now (hopefully I'll get some next summer)

Oh yay a fun and really informative, interesting video from Nick ! I had a walking iris years ago -it was a great houseplant... I got it from a Rutgers U. greenhouse plant sale ( lots of goodies) Neomarica is rarely available now in stores. Instead of following the “rare plant” demand I wish there were some growers who take chances on producing the more uncommon ones. Sigh... it all comes down to -of course -financial gain. Hey I was introduced to plant passion when I was 5. After chores were done my Granny would put peanut butter sandwiches in her smallish pocketbook and we would walk maybe 2 miles to the cemetery. It was an old one in Newark NJ... I loved it because there were wonderful sculptures, and especially the oval pictures of the dead embedded in the headstones. I digress.... after sitting on the steps of a wealthy monument we rested, and ate the sandwiches. Then oh fun...we’d walk around and after respectfully acknowledging the deceased, she would teach me to only take 3 small pieces of whatever caught he fancy growing in front of the headstone- but only from the back of the plant. No visible damage, and with 3, at least one would root. Geez she would almost fill that pocketbook....we didn’t go often, and her small garden was amazingly gorgeous. I now have a cemetery just down the road, but it’s all plastic flowers and doodads because at about 4 pm there is a herd of about 17 deer that come out and eat anything that grows. Apologies for the length of this, but seeing the clip of stealing the grave flowers made me remember and crack up!! Thanks again for showing a great selection of plants 🌿🌱🌻

Of ones mentioned, I have callisia repens (and other callisias, they're lovely, basket plant being my fav); Dischidia ruscifolia green and variegated; had caladiums but didn't keep them post dormancy, might retry; got some coleous in the garden (San Francisco weather allows all year yay) ... next to some rex begonias, got that snake plant but it's a single stalk atm -- from some place got the milky way cast iron tiny plant lol; got an anthurium superburm from the local plant shop that also sells poppers and use to sell floggers, and course black pagoda lipstick plant and also like 3 other lipstick plants (and SO many goldfish plants, iirc they're semi related)
If don't have, I suggest, for usually well priced: codonatanthus, streptocarpella, and there's so many nice cissus beside the super popular discolour (my discolour is going wild atm though, it's so pretty).

Walking Iris!! Yes I love those and their flowers and love that you’re talking about them!! Used to have them growing in my backyard and I’ve been thinking about them. Yes they would always bloom after a rain so liking water tracks. Would they work as a houseplant?? I suppose just without the fun of it “walking” and popping up all over outside.

    • @phytosexual
      @phytosexual  ปีที่แล้ว

Yes! They do great indoors and you can perch them somewhere like a less contrived spider plant.

In Australia, plants that are hip length go for 59 dollars and up. Like um no thank you, it's almost the same price of what people would sell for toilet paper in the pandemic.

I never knew that was called a walking iris. I remember seeing them sometimes in some malls in Canada. They look quite nice and lush once they are mature with babies hanging. I would add gesneriads. Basically all of them. They are so easy to care for and propagate, and most of them to flower. They are so giving. Streptocarpus alone are one of the best flowering houseplants I've had in that the flowers are big and showy and they can basically bloom all year with decent light. AND their flowers when cut last for weeks, usually around a month for me if cut right within a few days of the buds opening. I grow them all over even where I don't see them because I use the plants for cut flowers so have the beautiful flowers in a small vase where I can see them. Just change the water once a week and trim the bottom of the cut stems when they look brown to prolong life. Oh ya the plants are cheap too, usually 10-20 dollars.

For me my Ficus Lyrata, my Ferns, my Syngoniums, my Epipremnums, my Trandescanthiae and my Rhipsalis. Last but Not least my calatheas.
Bought a Lipstickplant a year ago , reduced and i always wanted it.
What should i say...its meditating...not growing, not dying, sometimes a yellow leaf, to tell me: Aah , you know, i won‘t tell you what i want, but.....
Then i turn to my sanseverias in Full light and a lot of water and they sing:) Life is beautiful :)

I thought you said “Florida toast” - and spent the next few minutes considering why. Conclusion, maybe Floridians don’t like their toast to be very toasty, which would explain the lack of color and name. Then you picked it up and called it a Ghost.

I absolutely LOVE Caladiums and it really surprises that the plant community sleeps on them. They have the gorgeous big heart shaped leaves and verigation that isn’t unstable like a certain monstera. the best part is that they’re so cheap here in South FL! I can pick up a 5 inch pot at my local nursery for $3! I’m definitely going to look into that iris you mentioned because unlike the majority I actually like flowers LOL

Anthurium superbum is literally so underrated I can’t sing it’s praises enough. I have grown it in a multitude of conditions and it has always continued grow beautifully- been in my collection for well over two years and never given me a reason to dislike it…but also have only grown two leaves 😂 it’s not gonna take over your house any time soon. Black pagoda is also so sexy I love hanging it in a window so you can see the purple veins. Just confirming that you do in fact need them🤷‍♀️

Affordable and giant don't mix since it takes resources and time to grow plants. I would recommend big box stores for relatively cheap plants in general.

I’m so confused by the title because by me (upstate NY) ALL of these plants are rare. The ONLY one I’ve seen in stores by me from NY to NJ to PA to CT is the begonia Rex. Although caladiums grow along roadsides here I’ve only seen them in one house and one restaurant ever. I’d sure love to have your issue of having “common” houseplants by me. All they sell (sadly) is endangered species that are hard to come by normally like podocarpus salignus and yavia cryptocarpa for example.
