I admit when I shelled out £359 on Kontakt it was a bit of an impulse buy since I already had the Kontakt Player and Abbey Road Drummer Collection as well as BBCSO Discover and Labs. For me Kontakt was a good investment even just to be able to use freeware libraries without the 15 minute time restriction but there are at least a few sounds in the Factory libraries that are usable including the Orchestral library. The Factory Orchestral library does give you solo instruments which are often not included with lighter free libraries like BBCSO Discover or Pallette Primary Colours.
I got it today with a free crossgrade and summer sale for 100 bucks hehe

The answer is, if you're serious about using sample instruments, then absolutely. Yes.
The leader in sampled instruments is Spitfire, not Kontakt.
