- In December 1995, a gangland conflict that I was reluctantly immersed in, had ended with the murders of three former friends, Craig Rolfe, Pat Tate and Tony Tucker. When we had first met, relations were relatively civil between us, but fuelled by drugs, my friends soon mutated into fucking fiends. Without rational or reasonable excuse, they threatened to kill me during their last few weeks on earth. I wasn’t overly concerned because they threatened to kill everybody that somehow displeased them. Threatening people turned out to be one of several motives for their murders.
The first casualty of any conflict is always the truth, opposing factions distort and fabricate facts to justify their position and reinforce their version of events. Others employ lies and misinformation in the hope of gaining favour, recognition, or notoriety. That was certainly the case when Tucker, Tate and Rolfe were gunned down. We had all been members of a group or gang that the media went on to name the Essex Boys firm. From the moment the trios blood-soaked bodies were discovered, the lies, misinformation, fabrication, and innuendo began.
Both victims and enemies alike boasted to the media that they knew who was responsible for the triple slaying. A knowing wink and a suspicious looking grin became mandatory. When pressed for details of the crime and the perpetrators names, every one of those being interviewed, relied upon the underworld myth that they could never divulge the truth because it is wrong to grass. One or two of the deceased’s ‘friends’ added to the funeral pyre of what was the truth, by heaping spade after spade of bullshit onto the flames. A relatively small time badly organised group of drug users and dealers was transformed overnight into a Mafia type organised crime syndicate.
I am not going to criticise people for simply being dishonest, as I am guilty of that too. However, if their only reason to do so was to promote themselves, which is true in almost every case, then they should be ashamed of themselves. As I said, I too am guilty of being dishonest about the murders, but I believe my reasons for doing so were both understandable and well meaning. My decision to lie, was made in the hope that Jack Whomes, who is guilty and was rightly convicted of the murders, would evade justice, and walk free. He had after all, murdered three men who were threatening to kill me. My debt to Jack Whomes was, therefore, considerable. Following the convictions of Jack Whomes and his co-defendant Mick Steele, Jacks younger brother John had asked me to assist him with a freedom campaign. Together we fed the media false information, hid damning evidence and on occasion manufactured evidence in the hope of securing an appeal.
A website I set up to reinforce our claims, only contained evidence that portrayed Whomes and Steele as innocent. We withheld a lot of the prosecution evidence which is why so many still believe that the duo are the victims of a miscarriage of justice. John and I were prepared to do anything that would lead to his brother and Steele being released. Criminals attempting to dodge the bullets of justice is nothing new. Criminals by definition, ignore laws, deceive, and do whatever is necessary to avoid arrest, conviction and ultimately imprisonment. John Whomes has since claimed that he was unaware of the lies that were being told during our campaign, but nobody put a gun to his head when he appeared in documentaries or gave newspaper interviews to repeat them. Dishonest criminals are nothing new.

I have kind of become obsessed with this case, as it;s in and around the place where I was bought up. I knew of a fair few of the people mentioned, not personally but by name. It's not been proven, it may have been claimed but some still claim Steele and Whomes are innocent, after hearing all of the evidence, experts etc... the jury believd 2 x shotguns, 7 x shts from Whomes pump, 1 x shot from Steele’s side by side. A live cartridge left in both weapons incase they encountered anybody when exiting the scene

One would have to assume the first shots on Rolfe and Tucker would have to be almost instantaneous given the position of their hands and feet (phones and brake pedal). With this in mind wouldnt that pose a serious hazard in the read doorway? Especially with man mountain Pat Tate in the back seat? Unless one man, 2 guns, then third shot into Tate's abdomen?
My conclusion is mystery 4th person gets out to open gate leaving rear door open whilst mystery gunman/gunmen open fire.

There's no such thing when you are telling the truth about a crime, there can be no confidence in iniquity. How can I disclose material on a website for 20 years or disclose it now and they can't? Why didn't defence lawyers who would have had all of the evidence for 25 plus years bring it to the attention of the courts? @@Fowez If I am asked to do a favour I do my best to accommodate. My kids wanted to be in a/the film (like lots of kids would) I asked the film people said no problem. I drive them there and they say do a cameo. One favour deserves another. Its not my thing the films are not my thing. Roller coasters are not my thing but I spent all day Saturday in a theme park with my kids as they wanted to go on them. I hope that explains....

Leachs book is full of false stories, he talks about everyone going to Pat's first coming out of jail party...Tucker didn't even know Tate then, they met after Tate was released. He claims Darren Nicholls was involved in the travellers cheques.. he has obviously read somewhere Nicholls was nicked for counterfeit currency, put 2 and 2 together and got 60...I could go on and on and on..

Am I the only person who has looked how far it is from clacton ( where mick and jack lived ) to Rettendon 46 miles 53 minutes ( give or take a few mile/minutes) and they were all apparently in the area, jack in the wheatsheaf car park in Rettendon, mick in bulphan at jacks uncle at the time when the phone calls stopped and believable sightings also didn't they get charged with conspiracy to murder ( which means they knew it was going to happen or set them up so whether they pulled trigger or not they're guilty ) anyone who believes they're innocent must think tupacs alive, elvis works in chippy and earth's flat

Whomes and his brother Jack have convictions for exploiting two vulnerable women with mental health issues so I shouldn't be surprised. Bernard how do you know Mick Steele shot Pat and the cartridge stayed in his side by side before it fell apart?
Because side by side shotguns do not discharge cartridges...

@@KevinHoey1 For more than 20 years I discussed the case on a weekly basis with John Whomes who was more than frank about what happened. Additionally Nicholls described the shootings in his evidence and what Steele and Whomes told him magically matched the physical evidence ie 8 gunshot wounds 7 x cartridges. A tad more believable than Jaspers handgun and sawn off pump action shotgun (which couldn't have held 7 or 8 cartridges

It would be interesting to see a poll carried out to see who actually believes Nichols version because from what I've seen I'd guess it's probably less than 10%..
No foot prints or DNA. No trace of any of the 4 different tyre makes that was on the passat. The only evidence is Nichols story and putting it mildly it's ludicrous.

Polls dont carry on weight, Jurys do and they found them guilty. With all due respect you are unable to form a rational conclusion becasuse you havent seen all of the evidence. As for Whomes x 2 and steele maintaining their innocence lol...that will be the same three who have maintained they are innocent of drug importations for the past 20 years...that is until Steele confessed not too long ago. There WAS forensic evidence in the Passat and there is a lot of evidence that supports Nicholls evidence. For instance, he said he waited for Jack in Meadow Road, Rettendon. Sarah Earp who lived in Meadow Road gave evidence at the trial stating a Passat was parked outside her house in Meadow Road that night at around the time of the murders. Meanwhile Jack is claiming the Passat is on a pub car park....trust me, theres shit loads of evidfence but some people cannot contemplate being wrong.
Bernard hope you're doing well. I'm really interested in a story I've heard that it was a Mr Patsy Clark that put the hit out with a Mr D known as the gunman. Is there any truth in that story, is it possible. Or do you honestly believe in you're heart that Whomes and Micky did this. I just wondered m8 that's all. It's a case I'm fascinated with.

Apart from the account Jasper gave to the police in January 1996. Is there any other evidence that connects DH to this crime? Circumstantial or otherwise?

None whatsoever and I am awaiting the proof Jasper even mentioned DH. Its incredible someone can make lots of allegations, Jasper said this, that and the other (I have already proved he lied about the police failing to ask Jasper if he heard gunshots...there are more lies to be exposed) yet people accept them as gospel without seeing a shred of evidence.
Well in the audio that you uploaded, the police officer says: Did Dean or Jesse say they were responsible? So I presume he had mentioned him.

@@Mikep307 The officer was talking specifically about Dean and Jesse ie did they do it. My previous answer was misleading, the Whomes family are from Canning Town but moved to Suffolk after one of them was slashed in an unprovoked attack....according to John. I think it was in the 70s ....the dates etc are in the book. Mrs Whomes practically brought the Bowers brothers up after they lost their mother. Just that fact makes the claim one of them gave Jasper a stolen car to ncarry out the hit ridiculous. As if they woul;d let Jack take the rap for Jasper etc...being as the two families are practically one.
That is very interesting, there was always rumours that Jack Whomes had Canning Town connections.
I've always believed Whomes, Steele and Nicholls were involved in at least the lure. Multiple phone calls made during that afternoon between all parties and the fact Whomes and Nicholls were in Rettendon at 7pm (whomes being by his own admission less than 1 mile from murder scene)
I've always thought that a hit man carried out the actual killings.
TMEYE have investigated this for 24 months however and they are obviously highly experienced detectives without any obvious motive to push a false narrative.

One thing that bugs me with this case though is , Why didn't Steel and Whomes admit their guilt and they would have been out of jail years ago . Why hang onto the not guilty plea ?
They had Appeals and so they waited for the outcome, then another appeal and waited for the outcome, they are currently waiting to see if they are granted another appeal. I am guessing they thought we will wait for the outcome and hopefully get some compensation ££££ There's plenty like them in jail.

No not yet, that's just a short promo. Part 1 is in fact in 2 parts. It's about an hour long in total and deals solely with the motive Billy Jasper is said to have given police for the Rettendon murders. After video 1 (parts 1 and 2 which will go up the same say) video 2 will deal with Jaspers account of the actual murders and video 3 will deal with Jaspers account of the aftermath of the murders. (Sightings of the deceased in a pub, sightings of the Range Rover, why no frost/ice on Range Rover, guns, trainers etc, etc) Then the complete story of the Essex Boys will be told over numerous videos over a period of time.

The jails are full of people in denial, Jeremy Bamber, Barry George even the Krays denied murder for two decades before confessing in a lucrative book. I've been inside, some people convince themselves their innocent because their legal team have told them they can get off on a technicality.. Remember Steele and Whomes were equally adamant that they were innocent of the drug importations until Steele coughed a year or so ago.
