This game took WAY longer than expected! It's advertised as darn difficult platformer which seemed to be untrue in the first couple of stages (except for a few hearts) but it definitely gets more difficult later on... it's a very well balanced platformer though and whilst it got me overly frustrated, I have to give credit where credit's due. Aside from a few hearts in particular, it was mostly the final stage that got me angry. Everything else was OK. I don't actually think the game's difficulty stays the same, but rather that as the difficulty progresses, you also become better and it therefore balances out. I think that's what makes a great platformer. Ofcourse the last stage is difficult, but that's how it should be. Furthermore on difficulty... whilst there's some hearts that are very difficult (especially the 100 orbs and 6 urns in the final stage), you actually only need 60 out of 81 to defeat the final boss. This basically means that if you really struggle with a particular heart, you can just skip over it. I feel like most casual players can achieve 60 without too much of a problem. The most difficult hearts are the two final ones in the last stage (100 orbs and 6 urns). I did them because our video guidelines demand it, but you wouldn't have to. I feel like developers sometimes just like to put a REAL challenge into their game for those who wish to be challenged.. but fortunately it's not mandatory to see the ending. The game gets a lot of backlash for some reason, but I don't see much to complain about. Probably the only thing that bothers me are deaths. If you die, you restart at the last loading screen (beginning of level or any building you entered) and you lose BOTH of your Urns and Orb pickups. In the second final stage you have to enter three mini dungeons and collect the orbs there too to hit the 100 requirement. Let's say you enter that dungeon with 70 orbs and accidentally die, then you'll respawn in that dungeon with zero. Which means you have to pause the game, return to level hub and start the level all over again. They could've allowed these loading screens to be a checkpoint. The final stage doesn't have such loading screens so the difficulty would be unchanged there which is good. Lastly, on that same note about deaths.. the boss has three phases. The first phase is some annoying 3-4 minute wave of monsters followed by a really difficult second phase which requires A LOT of trial and error and expertise to get right. The third one is easy but also requires trial and error. If you die, you'll restart the entire stage. You'll be battling these monster waves A LOTTTTTT before you actually understand the other phases and it's really annoying. It would've been a lot better if you just restarted the phase you died on. I've read user reviews on the final boss and most people basically never got to beat him. There's also no cheats that can be used and the infinite health cheat is only unlocked after beating the final boss and achieving all 81 hearts... so basically it's useless at that point.

Can we take a moment to appreciate that Vexx plays mario party style minigames against his inner demons. Like imagine if the physical manifestation your depression came up and was like "Hey you wanna play Sorry or Catan?"

I've literally been saying that to myself for years now and have come up with a small list of ideas for them to make the game a lot better. Like as much as I love the little hub area that lets you get to the other areas of the game it would be cool if they made it a metroidvania-esque world (I get that the point is that it's on different asteroids that used to make up the world that was destroyed, but the rift Gates can still link the areas) one thing I noticed about vex when I replayed it a few years ago was that even though you get special abilities like the bat wings or the magma suit it's really just for collecting a single heart in that area as just a sort of gimmick thing. It'll be really cool if you could just unlock these abilities to use and reach new areas of previous Maps with them. I would also like maybe an upgrade to vex's health and abilities throughout the game vex has a pretty sick move set to begin with but it would be cooler if you could unlock new combos that deal a lot more damage or maybe different types of power-ups for the talons. Another thing I always had a little bit of issue with the ability to shoot those weird spirit balls whenever your meter at the bottom left field it doesn't last long and honestly all it really does is crowd control though there's not really a lot of instances in the game where you really need crowd control besides maybe the final fight with dark Yahoo and his little Shadow dudes. I hear people say the platforming vex is pretty s***** but honestly I kind of have to disagree it's less of the ability vex has to move and more of just whether the camera is willing to work with you or not. Once you get a hold of the controls vex is actually a pretty versatile dude and the controls are actually very responsive.
my exact thoughts his move set works well, i can imagine him having a ton of combos and i can imagine his aerial speed being very fast making him a good air fighter im so glad im not the only one who thinks this. if they ever decide to make a smash 6 and they remaster vexx i hope he gets into smash

With how the lands here are just floating pieces of a blasted world, I often wonder how the planet looked before it all got blasted to floating fragmented pieces.
I remember playing Vexx on the Nintendo Gamecube from the early 2000's era & collected all 81 wraith hearts, all of reia's scattered diary pages throughout every stage, 6 of those soul bottles, 100 shards plus kicked dark yabu's (Bleepin) butt then sending him back to heck & beat the game at 100%. But what really disappointed me as a gamer from 1992 to the modern present timeline about this legendary game is that the main character was unable to jump & escape towards the portal of the shadowrealm ended up being trapped there with no return back home at the rift hub in the end to reunite with his family or see his beloved grandfather, vargas helping to restore his village of overwood. It would be cool & awesome if this game had a new sequel for the new platforms of video games today. 7.0 out of ten is the rating I'm giving this underrated game.

Funny thing is that I think _Jak II_ was what _Vexx_ tried to be (and mostly failed to be). One could compare these two games quite easily imo. :)
The negative reviews with this game always baffled me a bit because both when I was a kid and when I revisited it years later it was pretty great, even better in quite a few aspects than the games it takes inspiration from. I feel like a lot of the negativity came from the Mario bias since, while the game itself does have issues, it is a really fun romp and I really wish this could've become a series with at least two games after this one to improve on the rough patches here. Also, the music in this game is seriously overlooked, the first stage is an obvious favorite but the manor of the wicked is also a banger.

While I never fully played this game, I only played part of it whenever my dad takes me to Best Buy and I would play the demo version of it on xbox. The game looks and plays fun and the insane adrenaline rush of button mashing to insane combos gotten me hyped.

Like I know I played them so much but I only remember them every once in a while and it’s very vague and fever dreamish. Literally played these every day as a kid on the original Xbox, I’m glad I could find some game plays to relive the nostalgia.

Holy shit I knew I wasn’t trippin and this game is real!!! I was liking this game so much until my mother and father saw me playing it and mom said “what is this? Did you buy him this?” And my pops said “yes I didn’t expect to look and be so diabolical” i was just staring at the screen with the remote in my hand with watery eyes and already knowing what was gonna happen next.. “TURN THAT OFF RIGHT NOW AND WE’RE LEAVING TO GO RETURN IT” man I was so mad I couldn’t even finish the game bruh and I was so into it and barely getting the hang of it.. well looks like i might buy a gamecube and replay this game.

You can play it on an emulator on PC by the way, no need for gamecube. Gamecube version works best through the Dolphin emulator.

Great game. Only thing I hated about it was the camera. Could be trying to line up a jump and camera gets you killed.
