  • Colour harmonies, that is using colours or hues in a pleasing combination.
I’ll show how to use a feature of Adobe Photoshop to produce exact colour harmony’s, complementary colours, in simple tabletop still life photography.
There is a demonstration of how to use studio flash to make a graduated background for the still life subject. How to light the subject to saturate the colour and how to apply the complimentary colour in Photoshop.
This idea is not new, back in 1666 a chap by the name of Isaac Newton mapped the colours of the spectrum onto a circle and the colour wheel was born.
You can use a colour wheel to find colour harmonies by using the rules of colour combinations. The combinations determine the relative positions of different colours on the wheel that create a pleasing effect to the viewer.

Thanks for sharing this, quite inspiring. One question, in the second approach with a solid color, wouldn’t setting a blend mode to overlay or something similar produce a more natural looking image?

Can you tell me what strobe by Profoto you used for sidelight and the one under the table? Thanks!

The side light was a Profoto B1X and the background light was a Profoto B2, sadly no longer available, however the B10 has superseded it and has a bit better spec.

In the first method, the image was pasteurized.

Did you mean posterized ??? Yes it does appear like that on TH-cam due to the compression algorithm converting a continuous gradation of tone to several regions of fewer tones.
