I was thrilled when I saw this Canon PowerShot Elph 340 HS show up on Facebook Marketplace. The seller wanted $210 for the camera, and I was able to negotiate it down to $80 cash. It was a great deal, and I was excited to make a video that showcased the kinds of photos it could make.
Two big points about this camera: 1. It doesn't have a CCD sensor (CMOS instead). 2. It has the Positive Film preset built-in.
I've said this before, and I'll say it again - the Positive Film preset is, for me, one of the main reasons why I prefer Canon digicams over Nikon, Olympus, FujiFilm, etc. Many of the photos I've taken using this setting are pretty useable SOOC (still, I can't resist doing my own editing).
I know some of you who are Street Photography purists would disqualify these photos as street photography, and I wouldn't necessarily disagree. One of the key ingredients in street photography? PEOPLE. And in this part of Omaha there are almost ZERO pedestrians. This is a car-centric city, and this part of Omaha is in pretty rough shape. A lot of abandoned buildings and next to no retail and residential buildings at all.
Even though there weren't a ton of people to photograph, I did get two of an older man named Chester. He was making his way through a yard and expressed some curiosity about what I was doing so I told him I was making photographs and then asked him if I could take his photo. He said yes, so I snapped two quick pictures of him. The second one was overexposed even with 1/3 of a stop of exposure compensation so I'm disappointed that I made a technical mistake.
I will say that the CMOS sensor photos I take with these Canon digicams feel a bit too saturated in the sky when I edit them using the RNI Films app for iPad. I tone down the blue quite a bit to get it where I like it. It wasn't tough to let this camera go: the fact that it was purple AND had a CMOS sensor meant that this wasn't the right digicam for me.
This was also the first video I've made using my newly repaired Original Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera (BMPCC OG). I rigged it up with my SmallHD Focus 5" monitor and my RØDE VideoMic Pro to see what it was like to have all the tools I needed to get the best footage possible. I also used my Peak Design tripod to make it even easier. At one point a guy approached me asking me what I was doing. He had stopped his truck on the street and came toward me in a way that made me uncomfortable. There's something about a 6' 4" guy wearing all black and holding a camera on a tripod that makes people think you are up to no good. I had a bit of a tense exchange with the guy. I was not in the mood to deal with people who think their discomfort means that I'm doing something wrong. I'm not. Leave me alone.
It was great shooting with the BMPCC OG, but my biggest issue is the LUMIX 14-42mm powered lens. I don't like having to use switches to zoom and focus - I feel like I don't have finer control over these functions so I might try its sister 14-42mm LUMIX lens that zooms and focuses on the barrel of the lens. The BMPCC OG absolutely chewed through batteries, but fortunately I have six of them so it's not a huge problem.
As far as the attempted assault goes... That was crazy. I don't know what I was thinking with holding my ground as this guy charged toward me. I should have started backing up and to keep distance between us, and now I know after being assaulted TWICE doing street photography to keep space between me and charging assailants.
I'd write more about it, but I said everything I needed to say about it in the podcast I co-host with my buddy Alex. If you have any questions about what happened, drop me a comment.

First video using the BMPCC OG for the video clips… let me know what you think. And if you want to hear the full story about the guy who tried to assault me for taking his picture, check it out here: th-cam.com/video/rrpS9SbfCt8/w-d-xo.html

How did you manage to get such stable footage? Gimbal, tripod?

Tripod. Next two videos will have handheld BMPCC OG clips, but I’m going to try to use the tripod stabilization in Final Cut Pro to make them look locked off. We’ll see…

@@somephotovideos Wouldn't you want to use Davinci Resolve when shooting a Black Magic camera? The free version would do for the BMPCC as you don't have 4k anyway...

@@thedarkslide I could but it’s not necessary, especially because I shoot in ProRes 422 instead of Cinema DNG RAW.

So glad you liked how I did that! I've purchased a few typewriters in the last few months, and the idea just struck me as I was editing the video. It took a couple of tries, but I figured it out. I've got two more videos (with photos) ready to be edited!

Just picked up a Canon 30D, immediately fell in love with the colours. Now I see why people rave and love about Canons so much, especially the older ones. 150 Singaporean dollars, not a single regret. Legitimately be safe out there man!

Nice! I haven't shot with those Canon DSLRs but I'm sure eventually one will find its way to me. Enjoy the camera!

I loved every second of this video! I have a Canon Powershot Elph 360 HS and I am super excited to get out there and use it haha
Could you please tell me how to achieve similar results while editing the pictures?
    Greetings from México! 👋🏻

I love the 360 HS. Such a good camera. The hardest part about getting the look of my photos is understanding how to use the spot meter on the camera to preserve your highlights when you’re shooting. It’s really easy with these digicams to use the auto settings and mistakenly expose for your shadows which often blows out your highlights.
Once you have that figured out, you can use the RNI Films app on your iPhone or iPad to apply their Portra 400 film emulation and then reduce the strength from 100 to around 25. And then adjust highlights, shadows, saturation, color temp, etc.

Yikes. Omaha looks like a rough town. Glad you are ok.

This small stretch of Omaha is between downtown and the booming neighborhood of Blackstone is a little run down and overlooked but I’ve always felt safe walking around, grabbing lunch or coffee…
This guy just DID NOT like that I was taking pictures of him while he tried to chase down his dog 🤷‍♂️

11:00 this is why I never photograph people on the street. if I do I make sure it’s very discreet.

I totally understand. I’m going to try to blend in a lot more and pay close attention to anyone charging at me and put as much distance between me and them as possible. But when there’s drama in the street… I have to photograph it 🤷‍♂️
