The main theme of this song is escapism. She talks in an interview about how she thinks motorcycle people are the embodiment of freedom and she wishes she could just ride away and leave the world and all the problems behind. She wants to escape

Lana is my favorite artist of the 2010 generation. She has been my favorite since then because no one sounds like her vocally and her songwriting is just stunning. She’s a true poet.

It's nostalgic, freeing, makes you yearn for exploration, raw, it just hits the spot. In a much different way to blue jeans and dark paradise

The ending of this always gives me chills
The beginning of the singing part of the video, when she arrives on stade, gives me the same amount of chills as the ending. First time I watched it, I didn't know LDR (yeah, Ride was my introduction...), and when I saw that, I was stunned.

I always felt like this song was a metaphor for “just keep going”. When your mind is not at peace, you feel that conflict even more so when you’re stagnant. You shut down, and get lost in the battles with the different demons and traumas from your past. Most people go for walks, or go work out, to “let off some steam”, but this song just paints the picture of finding that release on the road. Maybe a car ride may do it for some, but the rush of the wind, the feeling of flying is incomparable. The various men in the video are also seeking the same release, an escape from whatever torments them. A chance to feel uninhibited, and not alone; be it anonymously with a lover, or in a crowd of others who create the safe-space for them to do so. Her melancholy and loneliness ultimately follow her with every man, every situation she found herself in, but these moments were a surge of electricity for her. Momentary, maybe, but always looking for more. In constant danger of finding more trouble. Risky, but thrilling. Crazy. The dichotomy of freedom and being tethered to the fight within us. For her, freedom is in those moments. On that bike. With those men. With those road dogs. In the open air, her issues gone with the wind.
We all have our escapes, our releases. We all get tired of feeling fucking crazy. That’s why this song resonates. A reminder to just ride.

We all know that Lana does not usually dramatize her videos just for acting, and less in this one, she really talks about what her life has been, so the video is 100% about her. She is truly one of the few artists who is usually a true box of secrets, and that makes her artwork unique and beautiful.
During this time, some critics even called her the Female version of Johnny Cash.
When I was still in active drug addiction, I was living from hotel to motel escorting to support my habit. This song resonated with me from very beginning to end. I have almost 3 years sober now but it's still one of my favorite songs and brings back a lot of memories.

I’m a huge LDR fan, and this song has been and will always be my all time favorite LDR song. It means so much to me. I got “just ride” tattooed on my arm and I see it every day of my life to remind me to just ride it out through any struggles I go through. I still get chills every time I listen to this song. To me she's singing about freedom, her being lost, not knowing what to do with her life and wishing she could just ride, and not have to go thru this society's obsession with success, having goals, but at the same time yes there is sadness in there. it seems that she has nowhere she can belong to, and so being part of a tribe with the bikers, makes her feel less lonely
There are a lot of autobiographical truths in the Ride video (albeit highly romanticized, which is probably Lana's greatest talent as a writer). However, I believe the biker scenario is meant to be more metaphorical than your friend interpreted it.
Your interpretation nailed it on the head; Ride is about rejecting the mundane 9 to 5 lifestyle - sacrificing the financial, housing and various securities that come with 9 to 5s for total spiritual & artistic freedom.
To "ride" means to explore, wander through life aimlessly but passionately, bask in the beauty of experience and freedom of possibility. Those who've submitted to 9 to 5s are parked - stable in life (a necessity for many) but missing out on the adventures of the "open road" as Lana would put it.
I consider Ride to be of the top 3 greatest music videos of the 2010s. It was released when I was 17 and just beginning to enter the adult world, so it's message had a profound impact on the trajectory of my 20s and type of freedoms I value.

to me Ride is pretty much about being free, having the true freedom, you are so free that your desires cant even touch you... having nothing to lose, nothing to gain, no desire, no expectations.... just peace and being able to accept whatever life throws at you, the true freedom.

She is an alternative artist but She has a decent fan following so some people may consider her a pop star but as you've heard Her music is very different than other pop music.
She has not won any GRAMMYs yet which is very hard to believe. She has been nominated few times. Her 2019 album Norman f*cking Rockwell was nominated for Album of the year and unfortunately it didn't win (it was a big surprise because eveyone predicted it will win. It's a MUST listen album. You should do it in your own time. You won't be disappointed)
She is named one of the most influential artists of 2010s. She was recently named Artist of the Decade by variety .
This is definitely Lana's greatest music video/song of all time! Another amazing one is National Anthem, because it's so patriotic and the sound is so ethereal! Pleaseee do National Anthem next!

I love that you did this video!! I was just sharing Lana’s poetry with my 87 year old grandma yesterday and she loves it. I have been a huge fan since Video Games in 2011. Her unreleased songs and. Her Lizzy Grant album are amazing as well. I think her words and her message can touch anyone and everyone from all walks of life and all ages🙏🏼❤️
Lana’s music doesn’t really make me cry but this song just gut punches me my friend passed away a few years ago and her first 2 albums always keep her memory alive it’s what we played in the car on a summer day if I could tell Lana something I’d say “thank you for making such beautiful music if it weren’t for you I wouldn’t have as many memories of my friend” 😔❤️

Years ago... I was homeless. I used to hang out with the 'bad guys' ... I had no home. No family... that goes against the nature of being human. The people I knew became my home.. I went along with them.. just for them. I rode along.. I just rode with them. I wasn't them and when my friends asked why I lived that way they had no idea what it's like to live on the edge... when all you have is the people you're with. Back then this song was the closest thing I ever related too...

Personally I like that she chose men that weren't akin to make models for the video because confidence, masculine strength and passion can certainly make up for that for a young woman.
Also she makes a reference to her father living a similar life and the men are all older so thr narrative makes sense.
There is sorrow in this tale about ultimate freedom, your friend was right. She cannot stand the corporate box that puts food on the table, she desired to be a poet she said in the first monologue but that dream was never realised.
It was for Lana I feel, she certainly is a poet , but not for the character depicted in the video.
The freedom she craves really is pretty hard core though and there may be a sadness felt after the intimacy with several men in the back of her mind.
I did wonder at one point, and I mean no offence to anyone , that she meant a totally different type of "ride". But I was getting carried away! 😃
She rides fast with the bikers, the wind whipping hair across her face as if to scold so she can AVOID introspection, she just wants to drink, have fun, be wild. ⏳🔥 Keep one step ahead of the melancholy thoughts that threaten to bring her and her world to collapse.
It also interests me that she says she was in "the winter of her life "when she encounters the bikers as if she was in a very bleak place when she met them. This hedonistic lifestyle saved her from a banality that had become so toxic she couldn't live with it.
I think this song is a bit special especially combined with the video 🌟and cannot understand why it failed to be Number one in every country!
Despite her popularity I still believe she is under rated, she has so much soul, a sultry beautiful voice and is a wonderful writer and weaver of dreams. She takes the listener to another world.🌌🌠

This is a little off but I really connect with that "melancholy" mysteriousness that people point out about Lana. Like me, she's a Scorpio Rising & that's just our characteristic in the eyes of the beholder. We're quite shy, stoic, introverted, hold some pretty dark secrets, and we usually have transformed from a dark past. At the same time we'll put on a smile when surrounded by sweet people or if we're in a (rare) upbeat mood. Our souls are very deep, and can be very dark too. Another Scorpio rising singer that gives those vibes is Avril Lavigne.

I love the same thing about music, how every song you listen to is unique to the individual listening to it. Even if we all have similar experiences, we each experienced that similar thing differently. Different angle, different combination of emotions, smells, sights that all combine to make it very unique from everyone else, and that is why music becomes so unique to each individual.
