The Mysterious Coffin Grave Of A Vampire | St Aidan's Church | Billinge

  • Not much is known about this grave in St Aidan's Churchyard in Billinge (England) which makes it even more mysterious and fuels the rumours of it belonging to a vampire!
As far as we know, George and Kitty Smith weren't prominent residents of the town and there's nothing to suggest why they had such a unique grave unlike anything else.

The skull with batwings usually symbolizes death by disease, that the person died of a fatal disease of the time like small pox, TB, the plaque, yellow fever, etc. Some you will see might have the image of a child or cherub with batwings for the same reason but meaning it was a child that died of a disease. A lot of contagious diseases back then weren't understood by the general public (even if doctors did) and they always used symbols like that to signify that the disease sort of 'came in on wings' and flew off with the person's life. This is how the general public understood it, it was like something supernatural to them.

Another great video, I was thinking maybe the church had been moved and the numbers were to show where each stone went. The same numbers on the opposite side got rid of that theory. It’s very sobering how many children died in years gone by, life must have been so hard

Beautiful graveyard. I’m always excited to find those in California which is rare. We recently had to travel a ways from work to perform a burial at a graveyard. It was hand dug and actually 6 ft where normally we go 4ft using a backhoe. He was lowered using straps. The graveyard was from the Victorian era. Great video.

Theres something about grave yards that makes you feel relaxed. Think the saying my mam would say 'it's not the dead that will harm you...its the living' has always stuck with me. I often would go to think and spend time with my mam but your head clears. You speak to people and watch the rabbits and squirrels at one with nature and peace.

  • @melcarter210

This gravestone is unusual in that it is shaped like a coffin but all the other symbols were quite common from Georgian up to Victorian times.
I live in the village and have heard the many myths surrounding this grave and commented many times on websites featuring it.
    Firstly the skull represents death.
The wings aren’t of a bat, they are angelic and represent the soul being carried to the afterlife.
The curtain behind the skull represent the veil we pass through from life to death and the snake coiled around the skull that is swallowing it’s tail represents everlasting life.
These can be found in many graveyards up and down the country and are Christian rather than anything sinister or cultish.

It is said that George and kitty were not local and died by snake bites …. But who really knows … grave markings are found like this in other places. What seems macabre to us with the skeleton and bat wings could mean something else in the age of when this happened. I feel the story of the snake could be to cover any vampire legends of the time.

  • @alisongrant5864
    @alisongrant5864 ปีที่แล้ว

We don't have any deadly poisonous snakes in the UK. Our only venomous snake is the adder but I've never heard of anyone dying from an adder bite. It can make you unwell and hurt a lot but they aren't deadly.

The end handle of the vampire grave has a dogs head with the ring in it's mouth. The serpent biting his tail is an ouroboros or the "never ending circle" This church was rebuilt several times due to uprisings and war. So those numbers could be the stone mason marking them for the rebuilding process. As they are opposite the same number on the parallel wall.

  • @HitchHiker1503

Also the snake eating its own tail i think is an ouroboros it means infinity and the cycle of birth and death. Hmmmmm...

That was an odd grave. But how do they get two people in that one coffin? Or is that just an effigy of a coffin with the scarey emblem? It does not look right.

I really wanted you to open the end bit of the vampire coffin, sorry! He could have kidnapped a maiden on a stormy night & taken her to his place of rest, held fast in his deathly skeletal embrace 😬😬😬

Could the numbers on the outside of the church indicate the Stations or the Cross?
