I was an exchange student in Norway back in 2012, went to high school in Drammen for a whole year. It was a great experience, all students are given a laptop at the beginning of the year for free. Most of the test and projects where done through it. Also, I had the opportunity to take elective classes like photography and business. As for the graduation celebration they buy busses to transform into their “party bus” and compete to see which group has the best one. Norwegians know how to party !
I’ve been back to Norway several times after my exchange year, is a beautiful country during all seasons.

Yep. This video is full of false statements. Homework, being *the* best, "well-designed" (somewhat okay, but the level of unnecessary bureaucracy teachers have to go through makes it a somewhat unpopular career) are either false or partially false.
That said, it's also better designed than in several other countries around the world.

Finland didn't have the best education system neither does Norway, it's a oversimplification in both cases, because how do you measure how good is a education system, when you look at grades then both Norway and Finland fall far behind countries like Estonia, China and Singapore. Why it's said that Finland and Norway have the best education systems are because of how easy it is to students to learn, it doesn't mean that they get a lot of good education, it just means that they get good simple education. There are a lot more countries that even put more money or teachers into one student. Like Sweden has a super high teacher to student ratio, while countries like Estonia have a great money per one student ratios.

The time that Norwegians get to work on homework IN CLASS may be the biggest difference between Norway and USA/other countries. Most of the time in the USA we do not get time in class to finish homework. Class time is to learn the new lesson and ask questions if your lost. If we do get homework time in class then it’s because we finished the lesson early (which is rare) and it’s only about 10-15 minutes maximum that we get to work on homework. So unless you get extra time in every single subject, your super smart and fast at writing more than likely your going home with a ton of homework to finish.

As a Norwegian student I can tell you, We do have homework in certain fields. I went Technique and industrial production, Blacksmith, Woodcarving, Notching and i'm now going Industrial technology. I haven't had a single piece of homework in any of these trades, But some of my fiends have. Private schools are still a thing but the government pays a minimum of 75% of the costs and the scholarship pays for the rest (mostly) The controvert deletes the bill for your scholarship when you complete the year. I wen't to a private school for 3 years and I'm back to a public school now. The public are much better. I've talked to some of my friends from other countries about their school system and their experiences. In Norway we have a much bigger focus on the trade we are studying and focus as much of the education as possible about it.

not really true, i went to a $25k/year private school and a public school, there isnt much difference. teachers know the material, its just students dont want to learn it. the reason american schooling is so bad is because the attitude of students/parents is so bad. the same reason that asian/indian students in the US do so well, because their culture is you have to get A's, B is a bad grade. most students dont give a shit what grades they get, and parents dont really either, they are too busy on facebook and cheating

We don't really have much homework. You have a medium amount of homework in elementary school, which you have to do less and less of the older you get. When these Norwegian's here complain about having a lot of homework it may just be "Read 3 pages and write a short summary for next week". I'm in upper secondary school and I have virtually no homework. Just a few assignments and a lot of tests. (Thanks Erna)

The U.S has 1 of the 2 best universities in the world. But that is not for the general population. Only for rich people. Oh and there are lots of Norwegians studying there. Overall Scandinavia has the best educational systems for the middle class. And that is not an opinion. Facts. Reality in the U.s when it comes to universities for the middle class? :) The standard of those universities cannot compare with the level of Norwegian universities for the middle class. And Norway also has the most democratic system in the world. The politicians in this country has to listen to its people. When it comes to the middle class Norway is on top with more than the standard of living :) The same goes with our Icelandic/Norwegian brothers.

    France : 2/10
-The education is free (excepted for the books and supplies like pens, rulers, etc...).
-Kids need to sacrifice their sleep (not healthy) to go early at school (8 am) and they come back at home at the end of the afternoon (between 4 pm and 6 pm) : the school duration increases with age
-A lot of homeworks, almost no free time
-You cannot choose which subjects you want to study: you need to attend to every course, every lesson... even though some are useless in your case (like sport, music, or art).
-You don't have the right to discuss topics of the lesson with the teacher, to debate, to try to resolve a problem differently. You have to follow strict rules, and using your mind is forbidden...
-You don't have the right to communicate with the other kids, even if it concerns the lesson.
-You don't discover the world on your own. You don't have time for reflexion, trial and error. The teachers give you what you need to know, and you have to learn it by heart (and actually forget it after the test).
-Teachers are politically oriented in most cases, and tend to spread propaganda in their lessons.
-Nobody will help you find which job is the best for you: no orientation, no showcase of the different jobs that exist... they simply ask you to choose what you want to study by the end of middle school, and your studies will in some way, determine which job you'll do.
-The system is based on grades (from 0 to 20), and they ask you to have the best grades in each domain. They don't tell you what you're good at but insist on what you're bad at.
-In public schools, there is a lot of bullying, so parents need to pay private schools for their kids to study in good conditions.
-Some degrees/studies are useless and won't give you a job. But they still exist...
-Huge quantity of stressful tests and exams.
-Most of the kids sleep in class, or get easily distracted because they lack of sleep, and are not made to be sitting on a chair for 8 hours, just listening to what a teacher says. The result is: inefficience, and monolingual and uncultured young adults. Nobody learns languages at school in France (and language learning here, consists in remembering vocab lists and grammar rules by heart...). The only way french people can eventually learn another language is by learning by themselves, on their free time.

We definitely have homework in Norway. While I was in primary and middle school I'm pretty sure all schools private or public delegated homework to their students. It's only in the more recent years that homework has become a debated subject with some schools opting to reduce the amount or completely remove them due to an increasing percentage of students suffering from stress/anxiety/depression and other such things due to the workloads. Research has been and is being done into the issue and some scientists/researchers believe that eliminating homework will counteract the current negative trend in regards to the mental wellbeing of our studens. In short: whether or not a Norwegian student is assigned homework depends entirely on the school they go to.

According to the results of studies (PISA-2018, TIMSS-2019, PIRLS-2011, ICILS-2013), based on the average score of students, the best school education systems in the world are:
    1. Singapore - 586 points
    2. China - 579 points
    3. Republic of Korea - 556 points
    4. Japan - 554 points
    5. Finland - 532 points

    10. Canada - 523 points
    - PISA - International Student Assessment Program
    - PIRLS - International Study of the Quality of Reading and Comprehension of Text
    - TIMSS - International Study of the Quality of Mathematics and Science Education
    - ICILS - International Study of Computer and Information Literacy
TOP-10 in terms of the total number of gold medals at international olympiads in mathematics, physics and chemistry is as follows:
    1. China - 384
    2. Russia/USSR/CIS - 374 (237/133/4)
    3. USA - 239
    4. South Korea - 219

    7. Romania - 154
    8. Germany - 123
    9. Vietnam - 120
    10. Iran - 117
International Student Olympiads are actually the only objective tool for comparing the competitiveness of university students at the global level. Unlike school education, there is no global student assessment systems like PISA, ILSA or PIRLS.
Top 10 countries by number of weighted wins at international student olympiads:
    1. Russia - 61.35
    2. China - 27.88
    3. USA - 27.84
    4. Poland - 22.82

    7. Spain - 13.86
    8. Canada - 10.51
    9. Belgium - 9.98
    10. Croatia - 8.90
The largest Olympiad is the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC). It has the widest geographical coverage, in it students from more than 100 countries of the world take part. Over the past 10 years, universities from Russia have won this Olympiad and once won a university from China.

I’m going to judge our country’s education system here based on my past experiences, its 0/10.
From primary to high school I always hear from the teachers that generally there are two types of students, “the fast learners and the slow learners” they say. As an innocent boy I thought back then that I might be slow and I can’t do much about it since it is already said by the teachers. In university I’ve been under some professors who obviously have no real idea of what they’re teaching, to the point that you’ll doubt how that person even became a university professor. At the start of the semester a prof will already assign us a project without even properly teaching us the subject. It’s a waste of time since I learn more from the internet than these people. The schools I went through are public by the way. The country’s in southeast asia, try to guess it.

The only thing that is good is that when you finsish elementary school and you can choose freely what to do. In high school/upper secondary school or what we in norway call it «videregående skole» is the free part if you know what to do after elementary school. If you don’t know what to do you have to do general studies which means you have to do three more year of «elementary school» but a little harder plus some new subjects. What i hate about the system in norway is that norway doesn’t teach enough creativity, free thinking. They do have a focus on bullying and teasing but they never teach us how to handle it. We are learned how to deal with stress and anxiety through homework, tests and exams. That kind of stuff can destroy a childs childhood, their learning process, their social skills and all of that can also destroy their future if not the whole life. What i mean by the whole life is that all of this stuff can lead to a child or teen’s suicide. More focus on how to handle bullying and teasing, more focus on developing social skills and less focus on how to handle stress and anxiety. With that said; less school days, more focus on social skills, how to handle bullying and teasing and less tests and homework. Tests and homework leads to stress and anxiety.

We have a lot of homework in Norway! And non of our tests have multiple choices, so they are a LOT harder than the tests in the US

Okay, so Norwegian students do(!) have homework and are often stressed out, just like the rest of the world. Our schools and healthcare systems are both "free", yes, but we have to pay something called "skatt" - directly translated = tressure - that is a certaint % of what we earn, even when we buy food in the store we have to pay around 15% to the government. That`s why it works so well... :-D = Equality

That may be the biggest difference between Norway and USA/other countries. Most of the time we do not get time in class to finish homework. Class time is to learn the new lesson and ask questions if your lost. If we do get homework time in class then it’s because we finished the lesson early and it’s only about 10-15 minutes maximum that we get to work on homework. So unless your super smart and fast at writing more than likely your going home with a ton of homework to finish.

I don't know where you get your data from, but Norway underperforms in all areas of Reading, Maths, and Science in the last 2 PISA study surveys. Clearly, it does not have the best education system in the world, not even close.

US education 7/10 as long as there is close parental involvement. And that means picking up courses which have been dropped in recent years. Choosing the correct charter school as well. :(
