    For those who are also learning the Schrodinger model of the atom, the concept of 'orbitals' is not the same as 'orbits'. The two terms are very similar but refer to different things and are developed from two completely different models.

    • @laralola24
      @laralola24 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sunny Wu what is the difference between orbit and orbital?😊

    • @henryelicker2403
      @henryelicker2403 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@laralola24 Hi Lara. From what I understand from my old chemistry professor, orbits are certain fixed and defined paths around which a particle travels around. Planets orbit, because they are on fixed, defined paths. Orbitals are for electrons, since if electrons orbited they would lose energy and crash into the nucleus of the atom. To evade that constraint, it was thought that electrons behaved as waves, rather, and orbit parts of ana tom in probable electron densities, or where you are likely to find the electron 90 percent of the time. So, based on energy levels, these shapes of electron densities are where the electrons are likely to be. That's probably the shortest explanation, if you take physical chemistry, it gets way crazier. Cheers!

      @@henryelicker2403 Why was it thought that the electrons would crash into the nucleus? Is it because of the extremely small size of an atom? Is there an amount of energy that would be the limit for an electron to crash into the nucleus?

    Postulates
    1. Only certain special orbits called discrete orbits of electrons are allowed inside the atom
    2. While revolving in these discrete orbits, the electrons do not raidate energy

    *** This is not the video for you 😅. And here's why:
    Concepts are not clearly explained. In what form do electrons lose energy? (EM-wave) This point must be highlighted, so that later, the student can grasp a strong concept of quantized energy of electrons (to explain atomic sepctra in Bhor's model). Moreover, labelling the paths taken as 'orbitals' instead of 'orbits' is completely wrong. Also mention drawbacks of the model: 1) Effects of Magnetic and Electric fields 2) Elliptic orbits 3) No considerations for wave-particle duality of particles and uncertainty principle 4) Electrons are arranged in a 2D plane
    *** Other points to be highlighted
    1) Energy is constant for an electron in a particular orbit, thus its velocity doesn't change and neither energy is gained or lost. Therefore, the electrons do not emit electromagnetic radiations.
    2) Continuous atomic spectra and not lines if the quantization of energy doesn't exist.
    3) Graphs visualising this quantization concept, etc, etc.
    *** Salient features of Bohrs model
    1) Quantized energy of an electron
    2) Calculation of energy, speed of electrons
    3) Calculation of radius of atom
    4) Fixing flaws of nuclear model by RFord
    5) Bases on Planck quantum theory
    6) Explained Major lines of Hydrogen spectrum prominently, etc, etc.
