I agree most mechanics don't take the time to do the job correctly and keep everything clean as you did. I have seen them put things back together with dust and dirt everywhere. I am like yourself I take my time do it correctly, clean everything before reinstalling and make sure levels are proper. 👍 Also recently purchased a Scion XD used the Ford dealer said 150 point inspection and changed the oil. After I inspected it they did absolutely nothing. I never trust shops.

This is the video I have been looking for! I have a 2012 Camry 6 Speed Automatic. Simple instruction on how to handle the refill procedure. This video shows this critical step in detail with the temperature check and the add in you did to complete the fill. I also have a 2009 Camry Hybrid and the dealer gave me a $450 estimate to just drain and fill the Power Splitting Device(transmission) so I researched the process and it is so easy that I do it myself every 25K miles.. The 09 Camry has 190K with no problems. Again thank you and your daughter for this fine effort.

Thanks for the idea on how to level the car. Will Be doing a drain and fill on the transmission on my Camry and didn’t know how to level car on my driveway which has a slope. Jack stands on front and hydraulic jack on back and pump up the jack until it’s level. Thank you so much! Great video.
I have a 2014 Camry with the infamous torque converter shuddering problem. Not sure if I should try this first or have a mechanic fix the TC with a new one. I have 14 days left on the warranty but they want the car for 3 days just to diagnose the problem and I can't afford a rental car right now. (due to emergency and very expensive medical bill) I need to have it diagnosed before warranty runs out to get the warranty. Catch 22 as always. Next month I will have the money of course! And I figured they'd have the car for maybe a week to fix the problem and planned to get rental for a week or 2......maybe less?.....but to diagnose I figured an hour. Mechanics all say the time is due to the fact that the warranty people take forever and may even need to send out an inspector which could take days. Thing is, the car doesn't shudder if you use the Sport mode and use the paddle shifters to manually shift. Then I heard about that stuff called Shudder Fix which people rave about. But Camry's don't have a dipstick and Shudder Fix may not be for CVT transmissions. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scroll down for my life story if interested LOL Bought the car from Carvana back in May of this year. Otherwise the car is clean and flawless. Not a speck of rust or dirt. Engine bay looks brand new. No leaks etc. Southern car. Underneath looks brand new too. The shudder isn't that bad but annoying and I worry about doing more damage. Heard enough yet? I'm not done yet LOL My plan was to buy this car and pay it off by November since I'm waiting on estate money to be released from last year. (Sold parents house) And my old 93 Honda Accord with 304,000 miles needed tons of work to keep running and pass inspection. The plan was to trade this Camry in on a brand new 2022 car. Bad credit from ex wife cheating on me and leaving me with the bills having to file bankruptcy is why Carvana was my only real option since they don't do hard credit checks...... but Carvana is almost 21% interest and my monthly payments for a 2014 Camry with 98K miles is 437.00 a month. But a WOMAN who was in charge of the estate forgot to get a document signed that she thought was already signed. So after waiting 15 months already for a lump sum of cash, that WOMAN just added another 6 months to the whole thing. So now this November is now next early spring.
Nice video. I did my 2015 1.3L Yaris recently, i'm from the UK. There was enough room from the top to remove the fill bolt & to fill it up. I used a cut off garden hose pipe and funnel, which took 2.2L. To make sure the car was level, i took off the wheel. To make sure the level was correct, i lowered the car, matched the wheel holes from the wheel to the lug nuts side by side, with a jack stand underneath of course. Used the Toyota CVT fluid, which cost £42, put in 2.3L & have 2.2L spare, even thou 2.2L came out, 0.1L was dripping out for the fluid check. I will do another fluid change in 3 yrs and use my remaining fluid i have left over. Just some info for anyone out there.

In Australia we have the U660E and I'm not sure if Toyota differ all the much mechanically. I also suspect your tyres are slightly over inflated too. See how the centre is wearing faster than the outer ??

Our transmission has a dipstick but I thoroughly enjoyed your coverage of this subject anyway and will refer others to it who need to know all the details... LeeAnn did a great job. Wish I had a camera person like that so I could try my hand at making a couple videos. 😉
Well done and informative. I guess your total fluid was 3.5 quarts? I would not use a parts house filter; they are not so good. The Toyota filter is a little more but is excellent. The funnel was a great tip. Your daughter did a great job with the all important camera work. Again, well done and thank you.
Stellar job, my friend! You're displaying professionalism in conditions that would likely be common for 75% of the public. That said I know how much you (and I) would appreciate your own shop. I have to giggle at the dirt bike and target shooting that are going on in the background, I would be at least briefly distracted & glaring in that direction, way to be on point.
Non driver here... U are focused & educational & clearly prepaired..telling viewers "Do this if u can". "If u have any doubt make sure a professional does the job for u" ... because i clearly being a non driver i couldn't... but i could at least knw where to purchase such items...
This is definitely the correct way to drain and fill these sealed transmissions. Very impressed by the filming job of your camera lady. If I was to nit pick- you should have drained and filled the fluid 3-4 times since you switched from Toyota WS fluid to an after market comparable. I switch to the same MaxLife fluid in my rav4, it's a good fluid. But not all brand additives are compatible. Get all the WS out before filling with another. I plan to just pay a little extra and get the WS for my Camry fluid change. If someone doesn't want to support and level the whole car you could drain and pour the fluid into a container with measurement markings like an old 5 qt oil jug. This way you can replace pretty close to the amount you drained out. But the leveling process is the best accuracy.
What state are you in, Hallett? I do my own work as well but sometimes I don't have the time to dedicate it; I would move there just to have you service my vehicles. You should properly train the so-called "techs" at the stealerships. Nice work man, thank you for taking the time out to show ppl how things are done.

If you are going to do this more than three times in your life, get a fill adapter set, a cheap one is as good as an expensive one, and a fluid pump. Because....if the fluid that came out was brown or worse you are going to do this a lot until it's final sorta red. Worse is black and silver like mine. Thank you Fred Anderson Toyota.
Nice video. I believe some of the process is relateable to other Toyota vehicles. Even the newer trucks have this type of set up for changing filling and leveling the fluid. The lay out is different but most of the instructions are nearly identical. You also could have used a fluid pump to fill the transmission from the container but for your vehicle the tube thing was good and probably cheaper. Some videos say to measure the fluid that comes out and put that much back when refilled too but you seemed to know how much to use and didn't mention that.
1. I like the vid but per the Toyota Service Manual you should have put loc-tite blue on each of the pan bolts. 2. You also should have done a complete fluid swap. Not just the 3 quarts as there is approx. 7 quarts in the trans. Now you have approximately 3 new quarts of generic fluid and 4 quarts of old dirty WS fluid in your tranny. Also, Toyota WS fluid is designed specifically for this 6 speed trans (has special additives) the generic fluid you used does not. 3 quarts of generic fluid and 4 quarts of WS fluid mixed together not really ideal for your car. 3. I would recommend 3 or 4 drain and fills with Toyota WS fluid but I would definitely not leave the tranny with mixed fluid like that. I would recommend WS fluid and most pro mechanics would say the same especially if you are keeping the car a long time............ The fluid price difference in oem and generic is not worth a new tranny and you can get the fluid cheaper on amazon. 4. The Toyota service manual explains how to use the dash as an accurate trans fluid temp reader.. Toyota Service manuals can be downloaded and iworth every penny. Especially considering.laser thermometers are not taking the temp from the same spot as the actual sensor. Therefore your fluid level will not be completely accurate. Why gamble, but as long as it's YOUR transmission and not mine it's no problem. Just saying.....
Dolphin Bluesong help! I drained my transmission and almost 6-7 quarts came out. When I refilled it, it was only taking less than 3 quarts before the new fluid started dripping out. What should I do??
Dolphin Bluesong I’m not 100% sure my car was leveled when I originally drained the transmission fluid out. Could that be the reason? I think the front was lower than the back of the car. If so, what’s your suggestion?
I don't think Toyota ATF-WS is designed specifically for this transmission. I'm pretty sure it was also to be used in the previous four-speed transmission that was replaced with this six speed. Our 2009 RAV4 with the 4-speed transmission uses WS.
I ended up getting into a big argument with my dealership over getting my filter and fluid change or just getting my transmission fluid serviced in general. They told me it's a sealed unit and that they do not recommend nor does Toyota to change the fluid they never mentioned a filter and the only thing they would do is top it off because it's a lifetime fluid. If I force them to change the fluid they will have me sign a waiver, so I just ended up leaving it be.

Jun Boo yes mine is working better then when I got it since it was never changes but want to include that my mechanic only did 4 qts flush since he also said that doing a whole 7qts my have made an abnormal change. Noticeable change for the better was less haunting when going into an incline.
Great vid. On some GM just to change the fluid you have to drop the pan. I just did a ATF service (drain and fill) on a 2001 Nissan Maxima It’s much easy to do. Also the filter it uses is just a screen and you never replace it. I used that same transmission fluid. It’s good stuff. But I used also Lucus transmission fix because it was a acting up. It has code p0744. 70 miles after check engine light came back on (I had turned it off) 300 miles post it’s driving and shifting almost normal but light still on p0744 500 miles post service it’s driving and shifting even better but light still on The code indicates that a TCC solenoid issue. I think it may be getting stuck. Hopefully it works out. But if it needs to get fixed the TCC is part of shift solenoid pack in this specific car, Nissan Part No.: 31940-80X25 SOLENOID REPAIR KIT - CONTROL VALVE About. $77-120 part This is something inside the transmission Nissan’s transmission made by jatco). Toyota uses a better one made by asin transmissions
Totally insane system, Toyota. Good video, I wish you had included a drive before you started the work and let us hear the noise it was making and shown us whatever other symptoms the car had.
The problem with your method is that the temperature of the pan is going to lag behind the temperature of the fluid some what so you’re really not doing it at the accurate degrees. There was a video of somebody that had text stream to show what the actual fluid temp was and then used the laser reader and they were different.
on my 2016 camry I had to hammer the 6mm hex into the drain plug as it didn't want to sit fully FYI. No issues with transmission before hand but after this service it was notably shifting smoother. 64,800 miles.
The drain plug is of soft metal. The 6mm hex hole was rounded off as I tightened it after the first spill-and-fill. I used a vise grip to open the drain plug at the second spill-and-fill, and it worked well for me -- the drain plug was not damaged. I then cut off the head of a screw driver bit, which is 1/4" hex, and use a vise to press the 1/4" shank into the 6mm hole of the drain plug. The shank was slightly larger than the hole, and it worked perfect for the tightening of the plug. For the removal of the plug at the next spill-and-fill, I used the vise grip again, and used a 1/4" socket on the shank only for torqueing the plug (29 ft/pounds) when I reinstalled it.
dealer wants 350 to only flush- they don't do pan removal- my concern is to get new filter and clean filings from magnets- did you ponder what you planned on doing prior to pan removal?? Thanks in advance

I plan on using Toyota fluid and filter/gasket , I’m at 112k miles on my 14 Se do you think it will hurt to do this drain and fill with a filter at this mileage, I have no history of the car but I bought it with 99k . I’ve done a coolant flush on it
With last time about $350, or more now, I will do DIY for this, and buy $100 OEM fluid. Not sure I will change the filter though. How much is the filter?

Toyota was smart to include a fill port on this transmission. My 09 E350 Benz does not and so a special adapter is needed to fill the transmission. This adapter also lets out the excess fluid once the temperature is reached. As a technique I would measure the amount of fluid that drains out and then refill with a bit more and when the temperature is reached ( cycle through the gears with foot on brake) let out the excess then button everything up. Thanks for this video , I thought I would need an adapter. My 2014 has just 25 k miles and I will most likely do a drain and fill at about 30k.

Great video bud. Just one suggestion, take off the driver's side tire. Seems like it would have been easier to access the fill hole.

Well done and informative. I guess your total fluid was 3.5 quarts? I would not use a parts house filter; they are not so good. The Toyota filter is a little more but is excellent. This is definitely the correct way to drain and fill these sealed transmissions. Very impressed by the filming job of your camera lady.
If I was to nit pick- you should have drained and filled the fluid 3-4 times since you switched from Toyota WS fluid to an after market comparable. I switch to the same MaxLife fluid in my rav4, it's a good fluid. But not all brand additives are compatible. Get all the WS out before filling with another. I plan to just pay a little extra and get the WS for my Camry fluid change. If someone doesn't want to support and level the whole car you could drain and pour the fluid into a container with measurement markings like an old 5 qt oil jug. This way you can replace pretty close to the amount you drained out. But the leveling process is the best accuracy.
What state are you in, Hallett? I do my own work as well but sometimes I don't have the time to dedicate it; I would move there just to have you service my vehicles. You should properly train the so-called "techs" at the stealerships. Nice work man, thank you for taking the time out to show ppl how things are done.

If you are going to do this more than three times in your life, get a fill adapter set, a cheap one is as good as an expensive one, and a fluid pump. Because....if the fluid that came out was brown or worse you are going to do this a lot until it's final sorta red. Worse is black and silver like mine. Thank you Fred Anderson Toyota.

Nice video. I believe some of the process is relateable to other Toyota vehicles. Even the newer trucks have this type of set up for changing filling and leveling the fluid. The lay out is different but most of the instructions are nearly identical.
You also could have used a fluid pump to fill the transmission from the container but for your vehicle the tube thing was good and probably cheaper. Some videos say to measure the fluid that comes out and put that much back when refilled too but you seemed to know how much to use and didn't mention that.

1. I like the vid but per the Toyota Service Manual you should have put loc-tite blue on each of the pan bolts.
2. You also should have done a complete fluid swap. Not just the 3 quarts as there is approx. 7 quarts in the trans. Now you have approximately 3 new quarts of generic fluid and 4 quarts of old dirty WS fluid in your tranny. Also, Toyota WS fluid is designed specifically for this 6 speed trans (has special additives) the generic fluid you used does not. 3 quarts of generic fluid and 4 quarts of WS fluid mixed together not really ideal for your car.
3. I would recommend 3 or 4 drain and fills with Toyota WS fluid but I would definitely not leave the tranny with mixed fluid like that. I would recommend WS fluid and most pro mechanics would say the same especially if you are keeping the car a long time............ The fluid price difference in oem and generic is not worth a new tranny and you can get the fluid cheaper on amazon.
4. The Toyota service manual explains how to use the dash as an accurate trans fluid temp reader.. Toyota Service manuals can be downloaded and iworth every penny. Especially considering.laser thermometers are not taking the temp from the same spot as the actual sensor. Therefore your fluid level will not be completely accurate. Why gamble, but as long as it's YOUR transmission and not mine it's no problem. Just saying.....
Dolphin Bluesong help! I drained my transmission and almost 6-7 quarts came out. When I refilled it, it was only taking less than 3 quarts before the new fluid started dripping out. What should I do??
Dolphin Bluesong I’m not 100% sure my car was leveled when I originally drained the transmission fluid out. Could that be the reason? I think the front was lower than the back of the car. If so, what’s your suggestion?
I don't think Toyota ATF-WS is designed specifically for this transmission. I'm pretty sure it was also to be used in the previous four-speed transmission that was replaced with this six speed. Our 2009 RAV4 with the 4-speed transmission uses WS.

I ended up getting into a big argument with my dealership over getting my filter and fluid change or just getting my transmission fluid serviced in general.
They told me it's a sealed unit and that they do not recommend nor does Toyota to change the fluid they never mentioned a filter and the only thing they would do is top it off because it's a lifetime fluid.
If I force them to change the fluid they will have me sign a waiver, so I just ended up leaving it be.

Jun Boo yes mine is working better then when I got it since it was never changes but want to include that my mechanic only did 4 qts flush since he also said that doing a whole 7qts my have made an abnormal change. Noticeable change for the better was less haunting when going into an incline.

On some GM just to change the fluid you have to drop the pan.
I just did a ATF service (drain and fill) on a 2001 Nissan Maxima
It’s much easy to do. Also the filter it uses is just a screen and you never replace it.
I used that same transmission fluid. It’s good stuff. But I used also Lucus transmission fix because it was a acting up. It has code p0744.
70 miles after check engine light came back on (I had turned it off)
300 miles post it’s driving and shifting almost normal but light still on p0744
500 miles post service it’s driving and shifting even better but light still on
The code indicates that a TCC solenoid issue. I think it may be getting stuck.
Hopefully it works out.
But if it needs to get fixed the TCC is part of shift solenoid pack in this specific car,

Totally insane system, Toyota. Good video, I wish you had included a drive before you started the work and let us hear the noise it was making and shown us whatever other symptoms the car had.
The problem with your method is that the temperature of the pan is going to lag behind the temperature of the fluid some what so you’re really not doing it at the accurate degrees. There was a video of somebody that had text stream to show what the actual fluid temp was and then used the laser reader and they were different.

on my 2016 camry I had to hammer the 6mm hex into the drain plug as it didn't want to sit fully FYI.
No issues with transmission before hand but after this service it was notably shifting smoother. 64,800 miles.
The drain plug is of soft metal. The 6mm hex hole was rounded off as I tightened it after the first spill-and-fill. I used a vise grip to open the drain plug at the second spill-and-fill, and it worked well for me -- the drain plug was not damaged. I then cut off the head of a screw driver bit, which is 1/4" hex, and use a vise to press the 1/4" shank into the 6mm hole of the drain plug. The shank was slightly larger than the hole, and it worked perfect for the tightening of the plug. For the removal of the plug at the next spill-and-fill, I used the vise grip again, and used a 1/4" socket on the shank only for torqueing the plug (29 ft/pounds) when I reinstalled it.
Should be the same technique for a Corolla 14 also!

I plan on using Toyota fluid and filter/gasket , I’m at 112k miles on my 14 Se do you think it will hurt to do this drain and fill with a filter at this mileage, I have no history of the car but I bought it with 99k . I’ve done a coolant flush on it
I would just do a drain and fill with no filter replacement.
With last time about $350, or more now, I will do DIY for this, and buy $100 OEM fluid. Not sure I will change the filter though. How much is the filter?
If you don’t have the thermal gun how long should you leave the car running before draining the overflow???
Valvoline Max-Life ATF fluid is a superior choice to Toyota ATF-WS.

Check how much fluid comes out, gives you an idea of how much to put in so you don't put too much and have to drain it out and waste it, at $7 a quart

Toyota was smart to include a fill port on this transmission. My 09 E350 Benz does not and so a special adapter is needed to fill the transmission. This adapter also lets out the excess fluid once the temperature is reached. As a technique I would measure the amount of fluid that drains out and then refill with a bit more and when the temperature is reached ( cycle through the gears with foot on brake) let out the excess then button everything up. Thanks for this video , I thought I would need an adapter. My 2014 has just 25 k miles and I will most likely do a drain and fill at about 30k.
