Columbo is better than any crime drrama on TV today, including the streaming channels. They all look for the same effect that each episode of Columbo had,. It shows what a great actor Falk was.
Couldn't agree more.
Eddie Albert is a real War Hero! Google him to find out more. Not only a great actor, but a legend in battle.
This is the episode where Falk was in a dispute with the producers. As such, he refued to be on set for much of the production and many of his shots were done later.
Pay attention to this clip and you will notice that there is only one time when Falk and the other actors are in the shot together. The rest of the time it is separate closeups edited together or seeing Columbo from the back with a body double for Falk.
Correct, and once you've noticed you can't unnotice. Shame, as it's otherwise a great episode and idea for a finale.
what was the nature of the dispute?
That’s amazing. Thanks for pointing that out. I didn’t notice it wasn’t him from behind but after I read your post you can tell it’s not him.
@@jack_rabbitHis contract was under re-negotiation and he asked for one more thing

Was Peter Falk jewish?
When I was growing up in the 70s-80s I was only used to seeing Eddie Albert in "Green Acres". This episode made me see him in a completely different light when I first saw it. He played it to perfection. This is one of the underrated episodes in the series. Suzanne Pleshette was always a hottie and one of my early crushes as a youth once I saw her in "The Birds". A timeless beauty.
Now they are all dead. Eddie Albert died at the age of 99.
Me too!!!!!!
I had a crush on Zsa Zsa Gabor. I remember watching " Green Acres" and marveling at how Oliver Wendell Douglas ever was able to marry her!!!
That was her sister Eva.@@robinrobyn1714
@@michael-101 we should all hope to live as long.
Eddie Albert was a very nice man,I met him once as a kid,my grandfather and him became friends after being in the same ICU.
It's funny to think more time has gone by between when this episode released, then between World War 2 and this episode. Time truly does fly
Time to play "spot the Peter Falk double"
What?
@@ragnarokstravius2074 Peter Falk was in disputes with the production company because he wanted to direct an episode. This was one of the last to be filmed and Peter didn't have his episode, so he claimed breach of contract and stopped showing up. Check out the shots from behind it's clearly not Peter Falk.

This was the third of seven first-season episodes.
@@SciTrekMan
Just because it aired 3rd, does not mean it was shot 3rd.
@@hellbach6268 But it does mean it’s not one of the last shot.
"Columbo" was one of the best of its kind, during the 1970s. Nothing else was quite like it.
Eddie Albert, one of many actors from that era that saw heavy action in WW2.
When Columbo says that handcuffs won’t be necessary, it certainly makes it easier to see a murderer as still a man of value despite his crime.
Ha! Coumbo arrested this man at his own Museum opening and in front of his girlfriend. On top of that he placed the murder weapon back in its case for further dramatic effect. Not cuffing the murderer was the least that he could do for him.
I think in the entire run of the show there were only a few times when Columbo got physical. (not counting the non-Columbo wedding episode) All the murders were distinguished men and women, and rarely did they put up any kind of struggle. I wonder how many convictions Columbo ended up with. I bet it's less than we would imagine. In this clip... oh yea... he went away, but there are other times... if you had a good lawyer you might get off.
Eddie Albert is an underrated actor, here and The Longest Yard. Plays an evil person to perfection
Everything that's ever been done anywhere is either _"underrated"_ or _"criminally underrated"_ on TH-cam 🙄🙄
@@donarthiazi2443 So long as they're not a serial literalizer.
The house exterior as seen from the water, that is supposed to be the Generals House, was actually owned by Peter Falk!
Nice made-up story bro
@@KainRazielMT It’s not made up.
@@KainRazielMT
He's right. At the time of shooting of this episode, that waterfront house was owned by Peter.
@@KainRazielMT Hilarious, acting like a know-it-all at the expense of sticking your foot in your mouth.
One of my favorite episodes..two lonely people who found a connection ..if only..
Thank You for sharing this. The clip is from one of my favorite episodes of the show. :) _John_
It's always been one of my goals in life to look like an unmade bed.
I love Columbo. I've seen them all several times and still watch them. My favorites are Any port in a storm, Swan song, and the conspirators. The ones with Patrick McGhoon are good too. Just love the show.
I recently watched "Swan Song." A classic albeit Johnny Cash was a better musician than an actor...his character did a lot of pouting for a season convict, lol! But I felt sorry for him being pushed around by that miserable woman.

At his own museum
"See that book? It's a Marine Military Manual"
Brilliant deduction detective.
I love the gotcha moment. Like the one that the perp. Hides the body inside the bathroom wall. Colombo tells him may I make a phone call. He call the beeper. It's ringing in the wall. Ha😂 gotcha.
The ultimate privilege- not having to wear handcuffs when escorted away.
I love Eddie Albert, he is one of my favorite actors.
This Columbo episode was the first time I saw him. My favorite Eddie Albert performance is in The Ray Bradbury Theatre: A Touch Of Petulance. R.I.P., Eddie.
A HUGE Nazi Swastika in the background of a Colombo episode is seriously a one off sight😮
Military museum, and the villain was a WW2 vet.
It's backwards, so whilst it's meant to represent the Nazi one, it actually isn't. Unless the entire shot is flipped which means they're walking backwards, which they're not.
Apparently Falk and the producers had been fighting because Falk wanted to direct an episode and still hadn't gotten approval, Falk's not in shots with the other actors, a double is in some shots. I have to wonder if they intentionally put it there as an F you to Falk lol
Great episode but a bit unrealistic. The old general who committed the murderer looks like the grandfather of the young girl and not her lover. They should have got someone far younger to play the killer. I don't know how she fell for him.
"See that book? That's a Marine military manual" - points at book that says "Marine military manual"
I haven't looked for a while and now I can buy all seasons at a reasonable price right here on TH-cam. Thank you 👍
"Just one more thing!"
Columbo should have figured out that it didn't matter to question whether Helen had poor eyesight or had been drinking when she said she saw a man get shot. She said he was wearing a uniform in a home which turned out to be the home of a general. That alone spoke to her believability.
I love Eva Gabor and Bob Newhart.
Always liked Eddie Albert but was never a huge fan of this episode, wasn't terrible but wasn't one of my favorites either.
Is it Marilyn or Cynthia, sir? 😂
Peter Falk had a disagreement with the producers in this episode and actually walked off the set and refused to do some of the scenes with Eddie Albert and Suzanne Pleshette. If you watch the editing in this scene, you can see them cut around the problem, filming Falk separately after he came back to the set. But the experience left a bad taste in Albert's mouth, and he was very vocal about expressing it in a very pungent way to Falk.
Why didn't he want to film the episode?
Must say for sych a cherrished gun its kinda dumb to commit murder with it if you are so attached to it you would never thrown it away
He went to prison for murder BUT
took classes and became an attorney...
... then bought a crappy old farm.

This one I found especially sad.
Creepy guy shows up to the woman’s house and she falls for him like a ton of bricks.😂
Looks like the *Sidewinder* still hasn't made it to _Miss Hunter's College on the Hudson River in New York for young ladies of good family_ 😔
The lady in this episode is Susan Pleshette she was Bob Newhart's wife on the Bob Newhart show
I say I did feel bad for the girl because she falling for the killer and he was beginning to fall for her and realized that he's been missing the best part of life and when he been caught he tells her he's sorry like he was actually remorseful.
