    I'm not sure if people who don't make videos appreciate how long the process takes. At the start of this video the clock was showing 11:31 and at the end, 18:32. Seven hours just for the filming, then all the editing, rendering, uploading, thumbnail creation, description and keywords, etc. In the case of Henry, he has a full-time job selling cars as well! Fascinating video. IF I was still in the UK and IF I was still buying used Porsches, I would be a 911Virgin customer. Great knowledge and someone I could trust.

    46:50 I'll be the one who does the maths in the comments section: if an engine covers 100k miles at an average of 35 mph and 3000 rpm, each valve opens and closes about 250 million times. Awesome video, thanks for creating this amazing content!

    Had my 83 SC engine rebuilt a while back. 8 of the 12 exhaust studs were broken! It still drove but with a pinking noise. All good now.

      You don't generally find exhaust studs break in situ like that. Head studs can break and that causes a sort of pinking noise, a very fine exhaust gas leak. But you wouldn't get 8 broken studs, that would mean at least 2 barrels falling off. The engine most definitely wouldn't still be running !!
      What is more likely is that as the engine was stripped 8 of the exhaust studs snapped. That's far more common and you have to drill them out. We did it on a 3.2 Carrera the other week when we were fitting a new exhaust system / heat exchangers.

    Top knowledge! PS, i think that the inlet valves only are natrium filled because of there sheere size of 50mm. The outlet valves are standard against the normal logic because the ceramic outlet portliners controle the temperature.

    Thanks for a great video. Really helps one understand all the aspects of the motor and what could fail/need repair. I have a high mileage early built 993 which I believe are quite similar but am curious what, if any are the differences from the 964?

    Really enjoyed watching this. Very informative. Question: when purchasing a 964, what tests can/should a garage do to help determine if a rebuild might be imminent?

      Some visual check around what comes out of the exhaust, a cylinder leak test and of course visual checks on any oil leaks. Oil leaks tend to be the catalyst for rebuilding a 964 engine.

    Love this channel for us air-cooled junkies just puts out more quality content each time 👍 Had my old girl rebuilt a few years back and loved learning about the process from my mechanic too, know a few people who have used Jazzer's and were very happy with the outcome.

    Very interesting - had an SC in the 80s & 2x 964s in the 90s (sadly all sold years ago) before running a 996 for 20yrs. Spent much of that time scratching my head as 993 values surged and my 996 plummeted - eventually traded it in last year for £12k vs my 991.1 C4S.
    Love the pre-993 design & thinking of adding an air cooled with 964 being the obvious choice, so this is really super interesting & helpful.
    Sadly think it might be mad to buy at current prices - are 964s rare enough to appreciate from the £50 - £60k you have to pay for a good one these days?

      Don't talk to me about values. I can recall having 3 964 Turbos in stock at around £35k each. They've gone up a little in value since :-)

    Great insight for all levels of knowledge and interest. Steve, in addition to a 993 and 3.2, I also have a 1975 900ss and 1973 750GT, so appreciate your passion for Ducati bevels. You'd be a one stop shop for me if I lived in the UK.

    Very interesting. Makes it all look quite straightforward, but I am sure that in reality it is anything but, with experience and familiarity playing a big part. Would be good to know about the timing slipping one can get between sprocket and camshaft on a 993RS and what one can do about it. Thanks Henry and Steve. 👍

      There are lots of little things to get right in the assembly. Even a wayward bit of silicon sealant can cause problems and ironically oil leaks. I will try to raise the question of the timing with Steve on our next video.

    I'm doing my first 3.2l engine now. Pretty interesting engineering and built like a giant lego engine with all the bolt together bits. Enjoying my work with it and can't wait to get back on the road. Great video.

    Hi Henry and Steve, thoroughly enjoyed that (my 993 engine was out last year primarily to sort out oil leaks). One thing I’ve heard conflicting advice on is the best type of oil to use - fully/semi synthetic? Or even non synthetic. What are your views?

    Brilliant video, really enjoyed watching it and learning about the 964 engine. What would be really interesting to know is what a typical rebuild costs at Jaz. Will I need to take out a mortgage to make mine oil tight and good for the rest of my days ?

      You would need to speak to Jaz directly. It will vary as to work found on stripping the engine and also how far you want to go. Do you balance the crankshaft, which ancillary components are changed or refurbished and so on.

    Question: I have a 95 993 and it has pings when the engine is hot and climbing up a slope at slow speed. The distributor belt is good and both of the distributor rotors are point at the marks correctly at TDC. Spark plugs and wires, dis cap and rotors were changed. When I just drive the car with only one distributor (either one), there is no ping. Any advice please?

      Hi there, sorry for the delay in responding, I've only just seen your comment. It's hard to diagnose remotely. It could be an error in the way the distributor has been built up. It could also be a problem with the ignition leads. Your "ping" could be a spark jumping across to the engine from a faulty plug lead.
      Without seeing the car it really is difficult I'm afraid. Get it booked into a good Porsche specialist and let them take a look.

      Yes. I don't know whether the R-reg cars in the UK were late registered 1997 year model or actually 1998 model year. Either way you can get 1998 registered cars in the UK

      Apologies for being enthusiastic, I’ll try not to give a toss next time. It’s also quite hard to try and steer the conversation / make the video unscripted not fully knowing where you will end up along the way.
      I thought I’d have a look through your videos to give me some pointers but it didn’t help much…. 😂
      Every day is a school day and when making these videos isn’t your job it’s tempting to scrap everything you did earlier but I leave them up there.
      Anyway have a great life and I wish you much joy in your motoring journey. I’ve just handed the keys back to a Thai Toyota Vios automatic rental car and it’s wonderful to be back in a Porsche again…..

      Steve is indeed a man of much knowledge. Ultimately he's been doing this a long time and so has learnt the hard way in many instances. There aren't many better places to go in my humble opinion.

    It was mentioned that the engine undertray is for reducing noise only. That is not the only reason for the part being there. More importantly, it is part of the overall aero-dynamic build-up which eventually prevents rear axel uplift at high speed. I would not drive without the tray.

      I will have to bow to your superior knowledge on that point although to my untrained eye the design of the under tray is very different to a diffuser. My understanding is that the 964 Cup cars didn't have them fitted (I am happy to be corrected) and if it gave added down force to the rear they would have had them.

      @@911virgin8 I know a lot of 964 owners who do not have the tray installed, because it's broken or missing or even because they think without it would provide a better engine cooling. In fact, I don't know either whether den Cup cars have it or not. I do have a technical doc that illustrates how the whole package works and to what extend each of the related components contribute to the overall aero-dynamic performance. The doc is in German only, but the pictures speak for themselves. I you are interested I could send you that information via email.

      The car is currently sitting in our workshop awaiting re-assembly. The bodywork is all done, there are wheels on each corner. We just need to find time to jump on it and paying jobs keep pushing in front of the queue. I'm hoping we can start doing something over the winter. As soon as we're back on it I'll do another video.

      Hi there. We were both wearing microphones. I didn't think the audio was too bad on this one although it is something we are looking to improve moving forwards. Particularly when filming the in car footage it's hard to capture good audio.

      No sure if you've picked up an error we made or are trying to suggest the air cooled Porsches ended in 1996. Air cooled 911s continued up to the 996 model which came out late 1997 in readiness for the 1998 model year. It is possible to buy a 1998 air cooled 993. The 986 Boxster obviously came out a year before the 996 and was released late 1996 for the 1997 model year. So for a period of time Porsche were selling both air cooled and water cooled engine cars.

    To begin with that's not a 964 engine. That engine case is a 2.0L 65-68' sandcast aluminum case.
