Shaun is a really good and caring person, I’m glad he showed that he does have control over his emotions and told Lea what he needed to say...I’m sorry to say this but I’m with Shaun (I like lea tho but she is superficial and manipulative).

      Why do you make it sound like he did her a great favour by not hitting her with the bat? Did he have a choice in that matter? I get that he is heartbroken and I agree the reason why Leah rejected him was absolutely hypocritical, but he had no right to hit her with the bat in the first place.

      Aryakanya Kirtania because he was angry, and autistic people can’t really channel their emotions in a healthy way. When he said” I want to hurt you” I just thought he would do something to her. No she doesn’t deserve getting hit by a bat, no one does. She didn’t deserve to get screamed at either but he could’ve done something horrible to her which I know he would’ve regretted.

    You know what makes this scene so great is that Shaun loves her. He's hurt by rejection, can't understand how to handle these emotions. She's so worried about the possibility of hurting him and ruining their relationship, but she doesn't realize that by trying to protect him she actually is hurting him. But between this and overhearing his conversation with Vera in the next two episodes, she realizes that even though she hurt him, he still loves her and wants to be with her, and she realizes she didn't give either of them enough credit

    I needed to hear Shaun stand up for himself.
    I was publicly lied about, gaslit into thinking I made a threat of harm for having a mental health crisis, and had my trust broken by someone I cared about more than anyone in a long time. It's taken months of therapy and the "you're a superficial, selfish, and prejudice person" line perfectly encapsulates the anger and frustration I've felt upon becoming lucid and attending psychotherapy for three months.
    If someone defines you by the symptoms of your cognitive disability and not by the quality and strength of your character, they don't care about you and never truly did care about you.

    This scene hits especially hard as an Autistic person. It’s so easy to take advantage of someone with Autism and it can take us longer to figure it out, but once we do it’s painful and humiliating which adds to the actual offense. There have been some times in my life when I was mildly suspicious but couldn’t trust my own instincts because of the Autism and then later finding out I was actually right and the person was a jerk and that’s when I lose it

      I feel the same but because of two different reasons my first few friends were incredibly toxic and abusive (Imagine your very first friend in KINDERGARTEN telling you that their friendship to you is a secret and that good friends should not talk back to their friends) and when I was in those same year I was suffering from mutism, so I couldn't express/defend myself fully. It still leads me to behave either like all friendships are temporary or that I have to placate them no matter what...And even when I do think something might be wrong I question myself a lot. People should just treat people others better than they do now.

    I don't think he's angry that she said no to being his girlfriend. I think the reason why she said no is what hurts. Because that goes beyond dating, that brings the friendship into question, too. Everything he thought about her and about how she felt about him feels like a lie. It's not that she rejected him as a lover. No means no. I think Shaun gets that. It's that she never really accepted him. And he thought she was his best friend.

    • @kpaxian6044
      @kpaxian6044 4 ปีที่แล้ว +286

      I totally agree. If she wanted to just be his friend, and did not have any romantic feelings for him...absolutely. He would have dealt with it and accepted it. But she kissed him and then pulled back. And the when he showed confusion and tried to come up with a solution...she said that you cannot "fix" autism...which means the issue is, for her, his autism. And I agree...that has got to hurt because he is right...that does not indicate respect. Not being romantically attracted to someone is totally cool. But he thought she cared about him deeply as a friend. This is probably why he is so hurt...I agree. It has far less with her not wanting to be his girlfriend and more to do with how she seems him and how much that hurts for a guy who was already abused as a child, bullied as a teen and belittled as an adult for a condition that in no way makes him less able to show love. Shaun is brilliant, but people talk down to him because he is neuroatypical. And that must be so bloody infuriating. And then this? No wonder he is both deeply hurt but also enraged. This was already a major emotional wound for him.

    • @myriam.b5693
      @myriam.b5693 4 ปีที่แล้ว +92

      I didn't understand it that way personnaly. More like, she think with his autism, she can't be the right person for him because SHE has big issues. Its more her the problem in her opinion. She didn't deny her love for him, she says she has too much issues, that she is too messed up for someone like him. Not that the autism is the problem, but her for someone with autism. Its a subtle difference, but very real and expose how much she think little about herself. And that does not brings their friendship into question. She still love him. And she show him respect all along the show. She is actually the one who always respect his decision without questionning his abilities to made them. Everyone at one point did question his abilities about it, even dr Glassman. But never her. She support him no matter what he wanted. So Shaun saying this things were probably very hurtful to her. And probably even reinforce the bad opinion she has about herself. I felt bad for both of them in this scene, because both are very hurt and miserable. And both side are very understandable. Beside, even if the problem was his autism, Why on earth that made her the bad guy ? Yes that hurt, but the same way being rejected because you are too big or stupid, or ugly etc. Besides, it can be very stressful to be with someone different, why everyone always forget there are two sides in a story ? Its hard for the one being different, but it is also for the one with him/her. Autism in every day life is hard. For everyone. Not just the personne with autism. Lea has the right to be afraid with that. Its a big responsability, a lot of work. And a relationship is already hard to made it work, so with someone with issues like Lea and the other with autism ? Please, there is no bad guys here, just a difficult and sad situation. but again, i really think that Lea has 0 problem with Shaun autism and more with herself.

He then proceeded to try to negate her feelings and not take no for an answer so she finally explained why she wouldn't be good for him . Becuase even though she may love him she knows she couldn't handle his autism in a romantic relationship. There is nothing wrong with that and she tried her best to be a good friend and let him down easy without saying that he forced her to do so then got angry that she felt that way. @JOSHUA MORENO no being a friend while helping someone with autism through things like that is very different then being romantically involved and dealing with things like that. Yes she has commitment issues and yet again I say she tried to tell him no without giving a reason. Whether she said it to get him to finally take no for an answer or because she truly feels she couldn't handle his autism in that capacity doesnt change the fact that she didnt want to take that step with him and he over and over again tried to force her to say she would. He was wrong in ever sense of the fact and for yall not to see that confuses me. I grew up with an autistic sister an being that close to someone is a lot different then being roommates with separate lives and being there to help when possible. Her having her own problems in life and letting him know taking on that roll with his autism is to much is not wrong in the least.

    Let's put a few things in perspective: Go back to season one when they first met...there was that underlying feeling that there could've been something there with these two. The two part episode in season one where they go on a road trip together and she kisses him twice even right before she left for Hershey. Season two, she unexpectedly returns and while they had their arguments for the first few episodes, they moved in together. Then she dates Jake (who we never saw again afterwards). Shaun dates Carly, but yet ran to everyone else for advice when it came to his relationship, especially running to Lea because he thought he could trust her, confide in her. Shaun goes out of his way to get Lea a job at the hospital, and when Shaun's father is dying, Lea goes with him and consoles him in the winter finale. Fast forward to karaoke where they're intensely staring at each other which causes Carly to break up with Shaun leaving him heartbroken for the first time....then somehow musters up the courage to admit his feelings for Lea, which while she did say she loved him, she couldn't be with him.
    While I know Shaun's obviously drunk, he's in the right to go off on her, as much as I hate saying it because I've been on the Shaun/Lea ship since they met, but he's right about her...she's flaky, indecisive, can't commit, pretty much a free-spirited in the moment kinda person. While you can't obviously make someone love you, Lea either sent Shaun mixed signals or never respected him at all. It's hard to tell what Lea's thinking here because she doesn't say a whole lot but maybe she's finally seeing the effect her mixed signals have given Shaun and he's finally had enough.

    • @ToqTheWise
      @ToqTheWise 4 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      I’m not sure if it’s so much that she doesn’t respect him, I think she doesn’t respect herself. I think the reason she said they couldn’t be together is because she doesn’t trust herself to not fail him. One thing I’ve been saying since the episode aired is that she didn’t even give it a chance but I think she was too afraid to. The whole thing about “you can’t fix autism” wasn’t necessarily her saying “I won’t date you because you’re autistic” but more that she recognizes where they butt heads and she knows those reasons are because of his autism. Believe me, as someone who really doesn’t manage their disability well, autistic people need structure. It’s how we thrive. If Shaun were to live like Lea does, throwing caution to the wind and living spontaneously for the moment, he wouldn’t last long. Sure he can learn to put the toilet paper the wrong way and un-alphabetize his beans but at the end of the day he still needs order and routine. Lea would have to learn to be a little more settled and ordered just as Shaun would have to learn to be more spontaneous and free spirited. They’d essentially have to meet each other in the middle. Honestly I think it would be good for them both. Before this scene I was actually hoping someone (I hate to lay everything at the feet of Glassman but honestly who else?) would talk some sense into her and she’d stop being so silly. Because I do think this whole thing is kind of silly of her, stupid and shitty but, in a word, silly. She didn’t want to hurt Shaun but in protecting him she’s hurt him in possibly the worst way.
      I don’t know if they could possibly recovered from this but if they could I’d like to see this explored more in the next season. I doubt they will but it would be interesting because I think if they both would give it a chance they might just end up being good for each other. And of course none of this is to say I disagree with your main point. Shaun needed to say it and Lea needed to hear it. Maybe it’ll be a wake up call for her.

    I think the actress held her own in this scene! She showed the characters pain, fear and guilt! She is able to convey so much with her eyes and her calm demeanor! I'm not sure if lea truly understood how much she hurt him? And I think that she doesn't trust herself or love herself enough to entertain the idea of someone so beautiful and pure of heart as shawn? The thought of anything good ever happening to her is so terrifying that she doesn't believe it can so she self sabotages herself in order to protect herself! I was waiting for this clip to be uploaded. I first want to commend Freddie and Paige for their tremendous talents they portrayed in this scene. Shaun had so much to say and I am so proud he got it out. With every frame that was on Lea, she barely spoke in this scene and every emotion and what she wanted to say was through silence. When I first saw this scene, it brought back so many memories. I have tourettes syndrome and I understand both sides of what is going on. "I want you to hurt the way you hurt me". In the end, you really don't want to do that. As much as you feel the need to, there is only so much you can say or do without going to the point of no return.
    A few analysis points I'd like to point out, now this is my interpretation:
    0:26 : Shaun points the bat at her and he shows genuine negative feelings for Lea. Lea's reaction at 0:30 shows fear. But also shows what she is afraid of when it comes to being with Shaun. Its a split second frame but it shows her fear of being hurt, physically by Shaun, which I highly doubt that Shaun could bring himself to do that. Once the bat is out of his hands and he drops it, she is relieved, but now her face shows that she is fully listening to him and what he has to say.
    1:01 : "You acted like you care about me, but you don't even respect me" - Lea's face at the end of this statement, tears forming, shows that she does care about Shaun and does respect him and what he does in terms of his work. She does hold him in high regard. The fact that in the last episode, she did confess her feelings for him, she did respect him enough to tell him the truth. She respects him enough to give him a reason rather than just flat out walking away without any answer.
    1:28 : Based on that frame, what I think she is thinking is "He is upset. And he needs to get it out. Let me have it. I deserve it."
    As much as it hurt to hear, she still let him say it. She could have fought back. But she knew he needed to let it out. And he knew it would hurt to hear. She calls herself, selfish. But I don't see it like that. I was in the same position as Shaun was. It took a while to understand why my ex did what she did. As much as I wanted to break something and do some collateral damage. I couldn't. As much as I insulted her in that moment, I hated it. I ended up having a tic come on that I couldn't stop and she knew and I left.
    I think Lea knows that she hurt Shaun badly. It was bad when she left and then she came back. I think it hurts her more that she knows that she is causing his pain. I know that she doesn't mean to cause him any pain. For those that do have autism, tourettes, aspergers. You are stronger and more beautiful than you think. Keep going. Keep fighting and taking the world by storm.

      Thank you for sharing this analysis. Good to see this mature perspective.
      I thought much the same as you during this scene.
      My interpretation goes a tad bit further on one aspect and I’d like to get your thoughts.
      Where you say she’s quiet because she thinks she deserves it: she may be punishing herself for blurted out the way she did, but I think it’s because even now, in this moment, when he’s come to her again, this time angry, with a weapon, and screaming his head off, she wants to be his “person”. The one who will love him anyway. And she wants Shaun to continue to be her person. The one constant in her life.
      She never wanted to hurt Shaun. It’s actually the last thing she wants to do. Anyone who thinks her heart wasn’t already broken before this exchange hasn’t been paying attention. She values what they have become to each other too much to risk sacrificing it. (Even to try for a romantic relationship, because as Shaun pointed out, she can’t keep a boyfriend)
      She knows that the bond they’ve formed will only survive if she shows him she can handle this outrage directed at her, too, and that she’ll still be there.
      Thoughts?
