  • I've finally gotten around to getting a power drawbar for my Tormach 440! It's a really great way to streamline your workflow and they're pretty fun to use as well. In this video, I explain why you might want one and how they work.

    I can't even imagine doing some of my projects that need 10+ tool changes without one. That reach is a killer if you have to do it more than once per part.

    Hello Robert thank you for all these videos. I just got a 440 and you have been really helpful. I notice you have a tool changer but no video on setting it up. I’m having some issues with it and was wondering if you could help. Thank you.

      It's on my list. I might get to it before the end of the year (and get it published sometime in January).

    I would call them collets for the tools r8 collets that except different size end mills

    Nice! I’ll have to upgrade that too...
    would be nice to see a vid on how you keep it clean! I don’t have your cooling system and it’s a pain... there’s got to be a better way... ;)

      I spend a good amount of time cleaning up the mill. I have a big stiff nylon brush I use to wipe all the chips down off the enclosure and then I just vacuum it all out with cyclonic attachment to my shop vac. I've gotten pretty quick about it. But my mill isn't always as clean as it looks ;-)

    Was the power drawbar assembly fully screwed down? In the last angle shot with the door open it looked like the right side bolt had some play.

    • @RobertCowanDIY
      @RobertCowanDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes. They are 'floating'. If they're rigid against the head casting, they will exert force on the bearings. they float and actually clamp against that little flange instead, putting all force on the draw-bar, and not on the spindle or bearings. so they aren't secured down. does that make sense?

      @@jr540123 I had to adjust the drawbar (the washer stack), but other than that, it's been working fine.

    Another great video. When you do the install video for the atc could you show the mechanism it uses? I suspect it is a Geneva mechanism and some type of sensor maybe a inductive proximity sensor.

      @RobertCowanDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Yeah, I can show you how everything works. I won't be focusing much on the install, since Tormach pretty much covers that, but a peek up the skirt is more what I want to show ;-)

    Reminds me of a Chinese finger trap. That’s so much quieter than a Bridgeport power draw bar, which is an impact wrench.

    • @RobertCowanDIY
      @RobertCowanDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      haha, kinda? it is very quiet though, which is nice. those impact-based ones are really noisy.

    I'm surprised that you do enough machining for it to be worth the cost to get a tool changer. I thought they were mostly used in commercial/industrial applications.

    you shouldnt let your collet close without a tool it in. it will despring the collet and ruin it. nice video

      You are 100% right, I only did that for demonstration purposes so people could see the collet opening and closing. I always keep a tool in the collet.

    Commercials: Can you not live at all due to a minor inconvience? Or are unable to perform basic actions that people do every day? Well with this product of minor convience you will actually have a life and everyone will love you and you'll die making millions.

      exactly. I'm not trying to hide the fact you can live without one of these, it just makes your life marginally easier. unless you have a tool changer, then you need one ;-)

  • @kirkcreelman
    @kirkcreelman 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is kinda dumb. You don't have to raise the mill all the way up to change tools. You can change the tool at any height. Power draw bar is great for sure. Using ATC you need to go all the way up for each change. All depends if your changing 10 tools every 10 minutes or 2 Tools an hour.

    • @RobertCowanDIY
      @RobertCowanDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      With the enclosure, you absolutely DO have to raise the head all the way up. Without the enclosure, you can change the tool at any height though.

    • @kirkcreelman
      @kirkcreelman 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Robert Cowan your totally wrong! Nice to see guys spouting crap when they have no idea what they're talking about.
      You can change tools as long as the tool has clearance over the work piece. Why would it be otherwise?

    • @RobertCowanDIY
      @RobertCowanDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are correct in that you need to only raise the head enough to get the tool out. But if you have the enclosure with the 440, to get the tool out, you need to access the drawbar, and to do this you need to open the door/cover on the head, which can only swing open if the head is all the way up. I wasn't clear that this is only a consideration with the enclosure, not the mill itself.

    • @kirkcreelman
      @kirkcreelman 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Robert Cowan oh, ok. Sorry about that. I see what your saying with the 440. With the 1100 that I have, it's clear all the way inside the enclosure as well so you don't ever pop out the top. I have the power draw bar, ATC and full enclosure so the tool ends up having to go all the way up anyway to reach the auto load position. It is a long wait once again ...but at least you can be doing something else. Manual changes are fast and can be done at any height. I like to use the touchscreen on the ATC to "open collet". This toggles and keeps it open until you have your next tool ready to insert, use the fob to release and secure the new tool. This prevents cycling the drawbar with no tool in place which is apparently stressful on the collet. I have the foot switch but it's obsolete with the method mentioned above.

    When pushing it down you're putting the force on the angular bearings no? At a first glance it looks good but at a second one hmmm.....

    • @RobertCowanDIY
      @RobertCowanDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's floating, and just presses down on the spring washers, there's no stress on the bearings.

    • @mrechbreger
      @mrechbreger 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RobertCowanDIY I mean when you push it down it must push against something? And that should be the bearings of the spindle no? The drawbar must be held by something.
      If the top installation would have some bar below the spring washers where the spring washers could push against during releasing them it would only apply the force to the spring washers - but I do not see something like that.

    • @RobertCowanDIY
      @RobertCowanDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mrechbreger I'd have to look at the exploded diagram. you're right, it needs to push against something, it might be the inner race of the angular contact bearings. But that's not a big deal, they can take it.

    • @mrechbreger
      @mrechbreger 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RobertCowanDIY The question is which bearings are used and which force are they rated and do you know how much force the cylinder is applying? Do you have any chance of measuring that?

    • @RobertCowanDIY
      @RobertCowanDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mrechbreger Those are good questions, but what are you trying to figure out? If it's going to fail? I'm not going to take mine apart and do all the math for you, sorry! Read the whitepaper on the TTS system on Tormach's website, they explain everything. It goes over the loads involved to hold the drawbar in place, and other fun things.
