I grew up in Dallas. After living there since 1978 I finally left last year. I sold my home where I lived for the past 20 years. I left for several reasons. The big reason is property taxes. I owned my home free & clear. Due to property values skyrocketing over the past 10 to 15 years I was paying close to $11K a year in property taxes. That is with a homestead exemption & protesting my values with the DCAD every year. My taxes still went up.
Back in 2021 my home was burglarized. It took the police 56 hours-over two days-to finally come out to my home & take a report. I then realized it was time for me to search for greener pastures. I have always loved the idea of living in the Southwest. I had been on trips out to New Mexico & Arizona when I was a child. I didn't really want to leave Texas since there is no state income tax. After doing research & talking to a realtor I finally bought a house in El Paso. Now I have been here for almost a year.
I have a 7 year old home-it's basically new. I bought it for well under $200K. The homes here where I live would easily be $400K to $500K in Dallas. I no longer have to deal with cutting my grass or weeds since it's desert. I have rock landscaping which is zero maintenance. No trees to deal with. No storms other than some high winds at times and dust storms. No tornados. All the electric lines are buried underground where I live so not once has my electricity gone out even during the occasional high winds we get. I get to see beautiful open desert about a block behind my house with the mountains in the distance. It's so much better looking than the flat concrete jungle of Dallas.
The police & fire departments are only about a mile or so away from my house. Last year we had 38 homicides in El Paso. Compare that to 246 in Dallas. I have seen very few homeless people compared to Dallas. Part of me will miss Dallas. It used to be a great place. But now it's just a cookie cutter city that has lost it's charm. Dallas no longer feels like the Dallas I remember as a child. It's so much different than it was 30 or even 20 years ago. It no longer feels like Texas. One thing I definitely do not miss is the humidity. Here in El Paso we have basically no humidity. It's super dry. Even Summers are more tolerable as night time temperatures are comfortable with no humidity. El Paso is a hidden gem. I hope it stays that way.

Dallas may have lost its charm, but you've found your oasis in El Paso. Who needs trees when you have mountains in the distance, right?

@BryanFerra Just left Tampa after 13 years. It is boring and you will not be going to the beach daily or partying like you do on vacation. That is a misconception that people have when moving to FL. That is just not feasible for most working class people. Housing (apartments/homes) are also high as hell (similar to Dallas and probably more in some areas), but jobs do NOT pay the same there. There are not many companies headquartered there as they are in Dallas. Once you do the handful of touristy type stuff a few times, you will see its much smaller than Dallas and it gets played out quick. Property insurance is hard as hell to get, costly.

I moved from south Florida to east Texas in 2020. Texas may have tornados but Florida has hurricanes. It is highly improbable that your house will be hit by a tornado, but if you live in Florida long enough you will get hit by a hurricane. I pay a LOT less in property taxes here in East texas than I did. In Florida as housing is worth so much less. The weather is certainly nicer most of the year, but there are certain times of the year where the weather is nicer here than in florida. As for you moving to Tampa, I would NOT move to Tampa. Tampa is the Houston of Texas, it is a shithole. South Florida is probably the best area to live, but right now it is extremely expensive....

Dallas people are somewhat friendly but not on the road or bad clubs like deep ellum.

Like the last major update was late 80s/early 90s and they decided they're good. Don't even get me started on the airport. I felt like i went back in time 20 years being their. Someone described it as souless and I can't agree more. Every block felt like the same block, over and over. Road were absolutely awful, filled with potholes and the interstate system is just a mess. Houston and San Antonio are much more enjoyable. Very dispappoting city. Will never return
