  • Rio Ferdinand talks about how he left Manchester United, being told by Ed Woodward on the last day of the season that his time with the club had come to an end.
Rio Gavin Ferdinand OBE (born 7 November 1978) is an English former professional footballer who played as a centre-back, and is now a television pundit for BT Sport. He played 81 times for the England national team between 1997 and 2011, and was a member of three FIFA World Cup squads. He is one of the most decorated English footballers of all time and regarded by many as one of England's greatest ever players.
Ferdinand began his football career playing for various youth teams, finally settling at West Ham United where he progressed through the youth ranks and made his professional Premier League debut in 1996. He became a fan favourite, winning the Hammer of the Year award the following season. He earned his first senior international cap in a match against Cameroon in 1997, setting a record as the youngest defender to play for England at the time. His achievements and footballing potential attracted Leeds United and he transferred to the club for a record-breaking fee of £18 million. He spent two seasons at the club, becoming the team captain in 2001, before he joined Manchester United in July 2002 for around £30 million, breaking the transfer fee record once more.
At Manchester United, he won the Premier League, his first major club honour, in a successful first season at the club. In September 2003, he missed a drugs test and was banned from football for eight months from January until September 2004, causing him to miss half a Premier League season, Manchester United's FA Cup triumph, and the Euro 2004 international competition. Upon his return, he established himself in the Manchester United first team and received plaudits for his performances, featuring in the PFA Team of the Year four times in five years. More club success followed with another Premier League win in the 2006-07 season and a Premier League and UEFA Champions League double the following year. His career at United, in which he won six Premier League titles and 14 trophies, ended when his contract expired in 2014, and he subsequently joined Queens Park Rangers where he played for just one season before being released from the club as a result of their relegation from the Premier League. He announced his retirement from professional football on 30 May 2015.
In September 2017, Ferdinand announced his intention to become a professional boxer, partly to help him cope with the death of his wife. His brother, Anton, also a centre-back, last played for St Mirren. Former England international striker Les Ferdinand and former Dagenham & Redbridge midfielder Kane Ferdinand are his cousins.

Rio deserved way better. He was United's best defender for over a decade. Lifted the CL as captain. Didn't even get a testimonial game... 10 years, probably Fergies best central defender. I also think Rio would of been a good character to have around the club as a coach or even director of football. Gives you an insight into how far that club has fallen... If they treat players who make them millions and wins them tittles, imagine how they feel about the fans... United is a business, not a football club

The only thing I can say on this (playing devils advocate) is that maybe United returned the sentiment for the way he dragged out the protracted contract saga when he signed before. Either way Rio deserved way better. ABSOLUTE LEGEND. Thank you!!

what a disgrace. reminds me of evra speaking out on how woodward treated him on another podcast. the man is a cancer to the club. seriously i d rather not sign a single player and have him sacked and replaced with an actual proper elite director of football and take 12 months to sign another player.

keanooooo we signed Donny in that month since the comment didn’t we? But fucking hell we need them all out of the club, Joel, Avram, Ed all of them need to go! At this stage more players need to speak out publicly like Luke Shaw has, and Ole needs to say something. The only issue is if you have people like Sir Alex who famously supported the glazers publicly can we really expect that Ole would risk losing his dream job? Especially when the glazers stated that they only care about getting champions league football. Once we reach that they don’t see a need to invest, so if anything, Ole coming 3rd instead of 5th fucked our chances of signing Sancho and others.

It should never have happened that way.. The club couldn't handle it. I'm still not convinced that Sir Alex made the best decision in backing Moyes BUT the fact Moyes had to work with the hapless Ed (in his new roll of power) and Co, must have made his job all the more harder.. They both looked like rabbits caught in the gaze of headlights 🤦‍♂️ painfully outa their depth.. yet Woodward still keeps his job 7 years later.. Scandalous.

As a former UTD doctor for home games , I served in the medical team at old Trafford for 9 years from 2006 till 2015. Sadly Rio’s experience is all too familiar.
I was a UTD childhood fan , born and brought up in Ashton under Lyne . I loved UTD and getting to be part of the medical team as a young doc , was a dream come true . After leaving to move to Qatar , I asked for a letter recognising my service to fans, and the club . I was declined for no good reason! It was a terrible way to treat a professional who loved his club. I don’t watch the games anymore . Live in Sydney , Oz. Sorry Rio , you deserved better !

I would like to give Woodwood the benefit of the doubt here by saying that he was new to the job and perhaps he looked at it purely from a business point of view etc. But I can't. No matter what industry you are a part of, if you are a decent human, you know that you should give long-term employees a good send off and give them their due and respect. Always wondered why Rio has never got a testimonial. Shame on Woodwood and United as a whole.

It saddens me that the club is being run by people interested in only business and have the audacity to bin club legends in such disrespectful fashion. It's these little subtleties you need to look out for, not bananas being thrown onto a pitch.
Just discarded the guy like a used wrapper after 10 years of service at the club.
Others at the club weren't really treated like that.
If you see no other rationale for the treatment, I can't see it any other way other than they have a certain attitude towards people of a certain colour.
The whole stuff with Terry and his brother may have played a part too I'm willing to bet.

    • @Longlostpuss
      @Longlostpuss 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@G M His words were caught on live broadcast, it was clear what he said with just a basic ability to lip read, but the defence used an angle that clearly tried to take everyone for idiots, but was clever enough to still work due to the technical circumstances of how the footage was captured.
By letter of the law you are right on the evidence, seeing lip reading is still ultimately down to interpretation, nobody can technically claim 100% accuracy with no audio.
However, it was clear to me and most people that Terry threw a racist remark at Anton Ferdinand, hence why the case even made it to trial in the first place.
The getting off of a legal case is a separate issue entirely, but I for one was not fooled by Terry or his team.

@G M Why are you dragging this nonsense into the issue? It's irrelevant to this comment.

@@SPM1966SPM Not really, this is actually what real racism is.
People focus on the abuse and name calling, but that's not what real racism is all about, it's on an institutional level, like your Stephen Lawrence murder case, for example and the concerted effort to block the investigation from above and tip off the suspects, for no conceivable reason.
In footballing terms, black players are not celebrated as much as their non black counterparts. There's been so many top black players in the game and yet there's a disproportionate number of black managers and senior board positions within the game, why is that?
It's difficult to draw any other conclusion other than they are being shunned for some reason.
Two cases I think clearly highlighted a problem:-
Ruud Gullitt getting sacked for giving Chelsea their best season in years.
Chris Houghton getting dumped for Pardew having taking Newcastle from the abyss back to a competitive team in the PL, for seemingly no good reason.
Where there's no clear rationale for these unjust actions, it leaves very little other conclusions to be drawn when the common denominator is the fact these cases are happening to blacks.

Woodward has ruined United. All about the bottom line and has no football in him at all. In it for the shirt and ticket sales.

And that's the mindset that sets people apart from the norm and those high achievers. It's that mindset that keeps wanting more and pushing. He is internally thankful but of course he wants more like everyone at the top. That's the way their gears work.

@@TheReflectiveCoachPodcast there is no way to tell he is 'internally thankfuk'--at best, we can gauge from body language and syntactical/lexical markers, and the ones he's subconsciously using all imply that he isn't one bit grateful, in fact is entitled. But this is mere conjecture on our part. How you can claim the reverse is absolutely true with any surety is frankly ridiculous.

It's how it was done. At the end of the game, in the changing room, with everyone else around, whilst the last game had been played. Rio could have waved off to the fans if he was told beforehand, he would have had the right mindset. As he said he was expecting something more as it wasn't said, so he was in the changing room ready to stay, but it was done in such a poor way and following a game, he would have had high intensity and adrenaline still. There was much more of a better way to have done this especially as a club deemed as the "best" at the time and for someone who served the club for so long.
