Anyone who sang under her was blessed. She used to say” someone get me my glasses so I can hear the altos.” She made us want to sing! Under her our choirs were invited all over. We were beasts cuz she was a beast!
This is what you call anointed! How Great Thou Art is exemplified in Dr. Carlton's style. I've never been to Phili, but I grew up in New York City....I know good organ playing, and this woman of God is phenomenal! Praise Be to God for her. May she continue to win souls to the Lord through her anointed gift of music. Bless you all!
I am a member at sanctuary church of the open door. i started playing piano and organ about three years ago and she was my mentor. she taught me so much and was the first one to really give me a chance and start me off playing at church. she's been pretty for a little while and today at church she came and the organist played this song in tribute to her on the same organ in this video. earl, you're a great organist and another one of my mentors but you had nothing on this performance.
She was an awesome musician and such a sweet Woman of God. My mom was a member of that ministry until she passed in 2000 and Dr. Carlton and the Music Department did so much for us. RIP Dr. Carlton
I'm so sorry to hear of Dr. Carlton's passing! My mom was a member of Sanctuary before her passing and sang with the music ministry there. She was such a sweet woman!
@allencofield I'm sorry to hear this news!!!!!! I had the opportunity to sit under Dr. Carlton and she was trully a mentor & a mother! She imparted so much into me, I will never forget that.. Prayers go out to her family & the Sanctuary church family... Zak Williams
My goodness. I'm loving it. I am so sorry to hear that she is no longer with us. I hear a little Billy Preston in there!! But I definitely hear her personality coming out on those keys!!! This is some real good Hammond playing right here.
@allencofield My family was very close to her and even Pastor Bronson we were among the first members of Sanctuary way back on Larnchwood... up till we moved out the city in 98. Do you know how God called her home?
Guess we know who will be playing this number in heaven from now on. God must be very happy to have her in the choir now. R.I.P. Becky. I never heard you in earthly days. I look forward to hearing you in my heavenly days! 3)
There is no other like MY Co-Pastor Dr. Becky Carlton. If you know of anyone else who can make an organ cry, please let me know. Praise the Lord that we not only get to hear this anointed woman of God here on You Tube but we get to hear her every Sunday. Join us at 5923-41 Walnut Street and see God through our Bishop, Audrey F. Bronson. You won't leave like you came, in Jesus name!
I know what you mean. She is a phenomenal talent. I do not know of any other female organist in the City of Philadelphia who can come close to her. I will be awaiting your post of her earlier recordings.
"Gramps" probably heard this song sight read from a Lutheran Hymnal and played on a Harmonium in some place like Minnesota or North Dakota (the original melody is Swedish, though was probably introduced to the Black gospel canon through someone like Mahalia Jackson). As far as whining about glissando on the organ, I wonder if "Gramps" ever heard of Jesse Crawford? Theater organists have been using glissandos in Theater organ playing since the 1920s (and Don Leslie who invented the Leslie speaker was a theater organ fan). Gramps is sort of right about how they probably would sound bad on a "traditional" (White) church Pipe-organ. Dr. Carlton's version is similar to the version that Billy Preston recorded in 1965, Upon hearing the original Preston version and other slower cuts on that record, I wondered if Preston listened to Theater organists a little?
WOW...This lady truly had an anointing. Did she ever do a CD with her music on it? Dr Carltons' fingers look like they just float over the keys. GREAT video.
Anyone who sang under her was blessed. She used to say” someone get me my glasses so I can hear the altos.” She made us want to sing! Under her our choirs were invited all over. We were beasts cuz she was a beast!
She worked the Sanctuary Combine Choirs sometimes

Music for the hart
I can't believe she can play gospel music like that
Im sorry gramps but she is putting some feeling in it. And everyone doesn't play the every piece of music in the same style.
george goss the Spirit’s anointing on her playing is quite evident.
wow
She reminds me of Baltimore's own Dr. Gloria Thompson
What City is she in ?
actually because of the slow drum, it would be great for pipe organ music. it sounds just like the tremulant.
nice
yooo granny a bad pun de organ star!!!
you needs to get your Lesbie speaker serviced - the drum isn't speeding up.
She passed on October 19, 2010
