    Battle for rokugan is fun, cheap and gorgeous. One of my favorites in my colection. wasn`t expecting to like it so much.

      Luchiop as an only school L5R player I love that there’s a new avenue to be in that world.

      @@TheCardboardHerald have you tried it? It's also quite easy to learn and not very long. So you can have a second game with people knowing how to play and it's really good.

      So glad that I trusted your opinion on "cheap" only to find out that it's $100+ anywhere so oof.

    Definitely do more of these. And if possible (and if it’s still an option) add to the podcast feed. Would make for a great listen on a drive.
    And since you have kids... Battle Sheep.
    And would Go count as an area control? If so that would be the great great great granddaddy of them all.

      Definitely sounds like we'll do more. I'll pass on the message to John, too. Perhaps if we inflate his ego enough I can use him as a hot air balloon!
      Thanks for watching and the feedback!

    My hidden gem area control game is Rumble Nation. I am still unable to get hold of it as it's out of Japan. We played a print and play version twice in an hour including the teach but still think it does fantastic job at executing area control.
    Inis is probably my top choice. GoT is kingmaking in a box but it's thematic, you stick your head out in the lead and the other players need to take it off Munchkin has a similar problem to me at least, but I can respect that people will thoroughly enjoy it and it's not popular solely because of the IP. Your final comment on Crokinole we've had that same discussion around a Crokinole board!

      @TheCardboardHerald  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      FuzzyLogic0 oooo I will definitely have to check out Rumble Nation, even if it’s a P&P. As for Game of Thrones, yeah, kingmaking can definitely be a problem but i feel like the development that empowers that last round or two of dramatic climactic play is built upon organically from the minor skirmishes in the rounds before.
      And yeah, Inis is great! I’ve only played a few times though, I need to get it to the table again. Certainly some of my favorite illustrations in gaming.

    Just got slapped in the face of how long I have been in this hobby... I own the original Wizard Quest. Bought it when I was in high school.

      Dragon Lair oldschool! That’s awesome. We aren’t quite that level but I’m sure there are people who look at Heroquest and Dragon Strike the same way, which were both super informative games for us.

    I absolutely love Ethnos but I feel like aside from it's odd visual choices, I think the area control is one of the weaker points (I agree with your buddy here), mainly because your pieces don't move from area to area and there's no interaction between pieces once they're on the map (which is also just a map of Slovakia which is another weird choice).
    I think if Ethnos ever gets a second edition, which I totally hope it does, they introduce factions or some kind of expansion to encourage interaction on the map.

    Turns out I was thinking Chaos in The Old World and Midgard for my 2 Lang games that require 3p minimum

    TI4
    Blood rage
    Scythe
    Clash of cultures
    ...all way, 24/7.

    • @TheCardboardHerald
      @TheCardboardHerald  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice picks! Personally I'm an Eclipse>TI guy, but I felt Eclipse had too many avenues for points outside of area control so you aren't driven to struggle for control of territory. Scythe is an interesting pick, though. Clearly you and I agree on Blood Rage, and ya know what, I've never gotten CoC to the table. Based on your recommendation I'll make it a point, though!

      TI4 is my not so secret #1 if I could only find more players willing to sink that kinda time I would have included it.

    I really enjoyed this format.
    I'm a pacifist at heart so area control games aren't my favourite type of game to play generally. I've enjoyed Smallworld and Mare Nostrum: Empires. I own Ethnos, 18 Minute Empire and Animal Kingdoms and they are all great.
    Flick Fleet isn't really an area control dexterity game, it's more of a skirmish game I think but it comes close?

    • @TheCardboardHerald
      @TheCardboardHerald  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh man, Flick Fleet is a fantastic thought. I agree, not quite AC proper, but there's an element there. Animal Kingdoms so nearly made the cut for me! And there's nothing wrong with being a pacifist. In truth one of the reasons I brought John in is because he's always been a far more aggressive, confrontation-heavy style gamer than me.
      Thanks for the feedback on the format. Really happy how this came out and we'll likely do more soon.
