I remember relaxing one Saturday evening back in the early 1980s watching Eva Marton in a live broadcast of 'Tosca' from the Sydney Opera House and suddenly the ABC Unions pulled the plug on the broadcast. I never forgave them.
I saw Marton on stage three times. It is great to hear and see her on DVD or CD, but live... She was more than a singer, she was a power of nature! Once my father went with me to see her. He doesn't like opera, but he put his eyes on her all the time. Like Callas, Marton had an energy that made every one to be impressed.
Viva Eva Marton!! Maravillosa!
Sensational singer! Her Turandot, her Frau ohne Schatten and Fidelio in Salzburg, her Elektra in Vienna, her Tosca, her Gioconda, Fedora, Wally, her early Meistersinger in San Francisco...
❤❤❤Eva eres maravillosa .
some people have pretty negative opinions about her singing . but this event was people gathered and celebrate her career and she gave them a little appreciation. so don't be so judgemental . please.
This is the same gown she wore in 83, performing a powerfully emotional In Questa Regia..She was a lot younger then..She's lost a bit of that power here, understandably perhaps due to age and other factors, but the supreme vocal artist that she is still managed to pull this off beautifully!..
I think it depends a lot on your breath support and control and also on whether you have trained regularly or not. Bergonzi sang a longer aria of Luisa Miller at the Met gala of 1996 at age 72 and apparently effortless.

@Gardis72: And just think, what an a**hole comment to make. Geraldine Farrah quit singing at 40. Some quit at the right time, some at the wrong time and some shouldn’t sing at all. But your comment is off base. Scotto sang what she wanted and it shortened her career.
Perche' si. Vanno ad inerpicare in romanze cosi' toste. Quando sanno. Che non sono piu 'in grado di. Sostenere il loro splendido. Passato. Operistico???????
It was always a big Slavic voice. Her Turandot became a trainwreck and frankly many felt it made her top ruined. Her voice in the late 1970’s was really perfect. By the late 80’s it getting a bit weird over A natural somewhat on an edge of something screaming. The voice placement too far on the jaw and cried out. By the mid 1990’s it was just unwieldy. She stumbled around in Strauss roles then it was over. Here Martin still exhibits a world class sound even if she conveyed more of a mezzo soprano voice at that age . She worked hard and did a lot of performing so to even attempt one of her old roles in a famous aria was brave. But she always was.
Back in the day EM was a great Tosca but the aria was not her best part. In my view it was the torture scene, totally overwhelming the orchestra, Scarpia and everybody else. She tempted fate singing Vissi d’arte here. Had to cut the high note short ( sig-nor) and luckily the Maestro corrected it real quick. I doubt the quick cut off was planned because an artist of her caliber would not have sung it if she knew it was flirting with disaster.
I honestly did not like how this lady is this aria I think that her extraordinary capacity that had insurmountable in Turandot definitely diminished the age does not forgive
she suppose to know better that at age 70 nobody sing Tosca in public ... she is truly one of the greatest but for god sake she ran out of air in the middle...this performance is bull shitt.
What I see here is a lady who devoted all her life to art and deserved all the love from the audience.
She has been my favorite Turandot of all time. I saw her Tosca back in the late 80’s. What a voice!!

Same dress she wore at the 1983 Met Gala!! Looks great even after 30 years. Love it!
Yes, during which she sang In questa reggia, I was there!
This is not that dress. Have a look at it in the video of MET gala. Very similar dress but not this one.

I adore her...She is hungarian as I...I am proud over her..
Me too.
Omg even at the age of 70 she sounds glorious.

Calaf well said. I echo your sentiment
I like her Turandot, a very strong voice

Not too shabby for a 70 year old.
Phenomenal ❤
Lovely, simply lovely.
wow, so cute her expression of exhaustion at the end of the performance , should have been a big effort for her to sing Tosca at the age of 70!

HERMOSA VOZ
I only saw her in Die Frau Ohne Schatten, and it was good. Later, on recordings, I found her sound overwhelmingly shrill.

most beautiful lady, voice f an Angel
Still the best voice of an angel even at 70 yrs young
A Világ legjobb Opera Énekesnője..
Thank the Lord she did not attempt Turandot. The middle of the voice has retained its regal splendor. Magnificent and intense Artist. Bless Her.
beautiful

Grande Eva ❤️
Only her most ardent fans could appreciate this performance.
Really? I've only just discovered her and am blown away by the sheer beauty of her voice

Una gran diva operistica.
She's awesome, and she's 70 people give her a break about the Bb no pun intended

And just think, Renata Scotto stopped singing at a much earlier age.

I honestly did not like how this lady is singing this aria I think that her extraordinary capacity that was definitely old is not forgiven
I guess you know nothing about singer … she is great at this age !
I don't find this to be a good example of this great artist exhibiting her prodigious talents.

Slavic voice? She’s Hungarian. Has nothing to do with Slavic folk

She was.....but not here....
Nice in her first years. After that only struggling with too heavy parts. Just like Guleghina etc. Wrong choices and ambitions.
Too bad she had such an awful conductor.
Yeah...some people should know when to retire. :-)
It was her birthday gala....when it was organised to celebrate her 70th birthday she had already made her retirement years ago....

When you are the glorious eva marton then you can do as you darn well please.
@@rachelberrythegleequeen.3221 yes at home not in public...you are wrong
@tsmmber: We’ll contact the opera house and ask for your money back. After a few seconds into it you know it wasn’t going to get better!!
70 yes, but she should have "understood" not to sing it.
