I completely agree. I had the same reaction when I saw him make fun of du'aa, sadly a close friend of mine, a born Muslim, who actually helped me take Shahada MashAllah, posted this video and seemed it was funny. This is not okay in my opinion. Asking Allah, the Lord of the worlds, the Creator, the One who is the All Knowing, the One who is in control of everything is the most we can do as human beings, after that it's giving charity, helping our neighbors and those in our communities. 100% Inappropriate, and scary how even MY grandparents have seen him on tv, they are old white American people, so of course every impression of Muslims is extremely important to help their understanding.

This was a wonderful response! The problem is that Muslims were not offended in fact Muslims were the biggest “😂🤣” commenters & supporters. There are certain things off limits - the same way cracking a joke insulting someone’s mom or a deceased loved is off limits; for us our Deen in. I appreciate Hassan representing the Muslim faith on such a large platform but easily this could be interpreted as a Muslim giving others free reign to make fun of & mock Islam. jazzahkum Allahkhyr for sharing your thoughts!

Idk what happened to him, but I know when he was growing up he was at least somewhat practicing Muslim, way before Hasan Minhaj the tv personality existed, I used to watch a youtube channel where he and his friends would make Muslim related comedy videos, nothing heretic or mocking Islam. It was only a few months ago when I made the connection that, that was him, which was conflicting to me since I hate the political personality he is now, but I loved when he and his buddies made those videos.
They've privated a lot of their vids, but if you guys search "Thank Allah its Juma", you'll find it.

The brother Saajid like I said was being very kind we should stick to what we know about Islam when talkin about it and a lot of us don’t know a lot with that being said if we knew the true reality of this world we would laugh a lot less and cry more often these jokes about anything islamic what is the benefit on them?if your not benefitting the deen don’t hurt the perception of it either if you are a believer and remain silent about it Allah knows best

Too many “modern” and young Muslims do the absolute bare minimum. Islam is much much deeper then just praying 5 times a day and fasting during Ramadan. Islam is a lifestyle we can’t copy the rest of society as we are supposed to be different. We don’t copy society we make it better.

I myself am young. Practicing true Islam like being kind, not swearing, strong family relationships, taking care of the earth, giving charity, avoiding riba, premarital relationships, extramarital relationships and modesty can change this world for the better many Muslims don’t even practice these things let alone non Muslims. We’ll fit in when Muslims become proud of their deen and learn more about it and share it.

it's surprising how can a Muslim talk about Du'aa like that!
I'm a doctor and I'm posted in E.R these days, of course we wear PPE and take all the necessary precautions, but still I'm scared when I go back home after my duty.... so I make Du'aa on a daily basis that please Allāh SWT protect me and my family from covid19, specially because my parents are both senior citizens and also have co-morbidities making them all the more susceptible...One has no other option but to rely on The Almighty, on The One Who has the power to grant and take away lives...
can't imagine my life without Du'aa
Allah SWT doesn't need us, instead we're in absolute need of His help, His Mercy; sadly we tend to forget this fact very often

If that passion isn't there for the deen then there is some serious reflection and learning needed to be done. Islam is the foundation, the root to all we do. If that foundation is mocked/belittled by a muslim themself then what leg are they standing on in the first place? Is society the basis to their morality and standpoint in life? We shouldn't merely be muslim by name but by our actions and words. Dua is tremendously important as this is how we directly interact with our Lord! We pray in every small and large circumstance. Allah knows if these duas are sincere and from the heart. May Allah guide us.

And leave those who take their religion as amusement and diversion and whom the worldly life has deluded. But remind with the Qur'an, lest a soul be given up to destruction for what it earned; it will have other than Allah no protector and no intercessor. And if it should offer every compensation, it would not be taken from it. Those are the ones who are given to destruction for what they have earned. For them will be a drink of scalding water and a painful punishment because they used to disbelieve. Quran 6:70

I think this is a good example when commanding good and forbidding evil backfires. One of the conditions to forbid someone fron evil is that it doesn't lead to greater harm.
HM wasn't mocking Islam or dua in the first video regarding Floyd, he was mocking those who rely only on dua, but never want to take any meaningful action.
However, I think the criticizm from so many of his people (i.e Muslims) over that point, and of which he was absolutely correct about, got so much attention and detracted from the main point that he just got frustrated and decided to push back with a more obvious form of mockery.
Although his mockery was not the most wise, it was't at all directed towards Islam, but rather towards the Muslims and their apathetic practice of Islam. Reminds me of the verse: "And do not insult those they invoke other than Allah, lest they insult Allah in enmity without knowledge".
So sometimes our criticizm can push someone into greater sin and we would share some of the blame in the end. He seems to have a deep love for Islam and for justice, that should be encouraged, and his mistakes can be pointed out in a kind and brotherly manner, but by people who have knowledge and wisdom.

AsSalaam Alaikum I just watched the video of Hasan Minhaj that you are referring to after I saw your response to it.
Brother Sajid I think you have Exaggerated what Hasan was doing it appeared to me he was mocking how brothers who have the ability to do some positive action act as though the only thing they have the ability to do is make dua and that takes them off the hook. Not that he was mocking the need to turn to Allah with our affairs by making dua.
The way of the believer is to follow up dua with practical actions. Have you reached out to him to discuss this issue with him?
I find to many of our young brothers who want to be involved in Dawah are hasty and jump to the worst case conclusions with each other.
Sajid dont be in a rush to refute but rather rush to communicate and understand the facts of the matter and th eff n give Naseeah when needed Refutations should be the last step if needy.
So many of our youthful brothers place Refutations first before even attempting to give Naseeah.
Just bear in mind how you would like to be treated for your mistakes.

    As salam aleykum
Hassan likely had a good intention to put forth Islam when he made those duas. But, as Saajid mentioned, Hassan took it a bit lightheartedly -- almost crossing the lines of joking. Many among us have made that mistake a few times; when explaining what wudu is to non-muslims or replying to them that, no salat isn't yoga, with that smile on our faces and going on with further explanation on that line.
Brother Saajid (has to) speaks up to correct wrongdoing. It may sound a bit tough. However, this video is a necessary reminder. We should not joke in any way when it comes to Ibada.

hes married to a hindu. I think that may have something to do with it. He seems like a cultural muslim like a lot of indian muslims in america. We need to have some sort of organised outreach to such "cultural" muslims as well.Perfect response akhi.

That's wrong he is not a cultural Muslim. He he raising his his children as Muslim. He even says Alhamdulillah when his baby sneezes. And no Indian Muslims are not just cultural Muslims. As an Indian I feel offended reading your comment.

God says the following verses in the Quran about those who make fun of Islam and its teachings to show how much of a serious matter it is and why muslims can't joke about it {And if you ask them, they will surely say, "We were only conversing and playing." Say, "Is it Allah and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking?" Make no excuse; you have disbelieved after your belief. If We pardon one faction of you - We will punish another faction because they were criminals} (9:65-66)

We need to look within ourselves to make the necessary improvements. We are ALL sinners and have so much to fix within ourselves. If we focused more on that, we would not have time or the inclination to call out what we perceive to be fault in others.
May Allah keep us on the straight path and give us the strength to have mercy on our brothers and sisters, for they are just as weak as us. May our intentions be pure for one another. And last but not least, UNITE once and for all no matter our differences because have no doubt, there is a war against Islam in this country and beyond.
Our enemies are watching us attack each other, isolate ourselves, become more and more divided by way of racism and the like. We NEED to focus and STOP being distracted by our nafs and egos and work TOGETHER on our single collective common goal.
May Allah protect us all. And as always, Allah knows best!

Wanting to fight against injustice doesn't come from any religion. It comes from being human. He wasn't mocking dua, he was calling out our previous generation's "praying it away" or "pray to allah and he will take care of it" mentality. He was calling out that that isn't a solution. That that isnt enough and we must do better.

Brother Saajid did read between the lines, as he suggested Hasan could've quoted a relevant Hadith which actually calls us to action, rather than disrespecting the act of making dua. He also just could've said for Muslims to actually act to make change rather than only making dua, there were plenty of respectful ways of going about it but he chose pretty much the worst one.

Everybody judging and condemning like they are the perfect muslim...Instead of pointing fingers lets open a civil dialouge and explain where he was wrong and how he can find a way to be respectful and to portray muslims in a more correct way. Plus he is underlining a big issue in the usa, so lets try not to ignore everything he says becouse of his mocking. As good muslims we should throw away sins, but also forgive and help spiritual growing...as well as be aware and fight for justice

his show got cancelled...he was talking about good things however politically. unfortunate. the more Muslims in the mainstream the better for our deen. I feel because of media propaganda, muslims are fearful in the west about repping their faith, which prohibits them from promoting it thus diminishing opportunities of spreading our truth. the goal of muslims should be to support eachother so we can normalize islam and everyone becomes just as aware of hajj, salat, ramadan...as Sunday church, the bible and Christmas.

Assalamu aleykum Brother Saajid, I appreciate your sensitivity to protect Islam. I watched the episode where Hasan Minhaj bashes out the Muslim community in the US to take action and after watching your video I watched it again, especially around the 11th minute where he talks about du'a.I rewinded and watched it several times but I don't see that he is having a disrespectful attitude towards du'a but rather mocking at the hypocritical approach of Muslims who pay lip service to Islam and mention the words du'a but do not follow up their words with action. I watched the second video where he interviews the attorney general. I did not like the way he prays, the trivial issues he pretends to ask Allah SWT so I understand now what you are talking about. He'd better stay within his realm of comedy and not transgress into Islam if he cannot have a respectful attitude. May Allah SWT keep us all steadfast on Sirat al Mustakim.

  • @tauriqabdullah6130

You totally missed the point of his statement. He was not degrading the act of making dua. He expressed his frustration at the brothers who, when there is a problem that needs to be changed, they simply say "make dua". As far as I know, making dua is not enough and in many cases, its used as an excuse for laziness.
Imagine if the messenger of Allah (SAW) just made dua that Allah should guide the ummah. Is that what he(SAW) did? No, he made dua but he followed it up with ACTION. And that is what Hassan meant. All we do is we say we going to make dua but we take absolutely no action. I wholeheartedly feel Hassan's frustration. Making dua is not an excuse for us to take no action. He was not mocking the deen nor was he mocking the act of making dua.
