- The 2014 Royal Rumble was one of the most controversial WWE PPVs in recent memory. It was the night a returning Hollywood hero had his big moment spoiled. It was the night WWE fans pretty much hijacked the show and sent WWE a message about what (and who) they really wanted to see in the prime position. It was the night before one of the biggest stars in the business decided he’d had enough and walked out. Who the hell is Hook? Are you referring to Josh Briggs? If so, that would make me feel old because I was 23 when the 2014 Royal Rumble PPV occurred. I was turning 24 in May of that year. I'm 33 now.
@@jodawa2504 I get the joke, but Hook is Taz’ son. He is a few months younger than me (I just turned 25 last month), so he was actually in his freshman year of high school at the time.
When you listed those names at the beginning I panicked..."I don't remember them being at the Rumble" I thought.

The "What happened to that wrestler" theme song has officially been stuck in my head for years now.
I randomly find myself singing it at work, and my coworkers used to look at me like I was crazy. They're all Boomers and Gen-Xers, so they know most all of the names. Now they actually get into it with me. Shit gets weird when you work with the same people for almost a decade.😂

I'd say 2015 was worse/more controversial. 2014 was a booking mistake and at least somewhat understandable, considering Batista had just come back. 2015 was WWE actively laughing at the fans. Just look at Bryan being eliminated, Goldust being next out so that "Shattered Dreams" showed on the titantron, and then obviously the whole Roman running riot/Rock debacle. Open to opinions on this one
Oh man I just posted something absolutely similar to your post before reading the comments. But man I’m so happy other people share this opinion. Like as a long time viewer and fan, that was the biggest spit in the face I’ve ever felt. Thats me not even a HUGE Daniel Bryan fan or a HUGE Roman Reigns hater at that time, just the way it went down was just insulting. I’m happy Vince is out of the picture and I hope he stays out for good.

I remember that Rumble. I had taken some time off from pro wrestling after the end the Attitude Era, and I had just started watching regularly again a few months before this show, and this was actually the first PPV I had watched since I began watching it again. I purchased this PPV specifically because I knew Daniel Bryan was going to win, and I really wanted to see it live. Other than the debacle with Cody at last year's Wrestlemania, I have never been more pissed at a WWE show during my 32 years of watching. I was actually throwing stuff at the tv. I really feel bad for Bautista. He got screwed in all of this. He kinda got blamed and took all the flack for it, but it wasn't his fault. He expected a hero's welcome for his return, but got booed out of the building. WWE should have called an audible when they saw how popular Danielson was getting. There were plenty of interesting things for them to do with Bautista at the time, instead of making the fans turn on him.
When you cause an entire arena to boo REY FUCKING MYSTERIO and everything he does in the match, then cheer his elimination, you know you've fucked up.
Revisionism. Rey hadn't done anything of note for years and was clearly going through the motions at the time. If he hadn't the crowd wouldn't dare boo him

In my opinion 2015 is WAY more controversial. I actually wasted my time and went back to watch it, and it was way worse than I thought. Started off cool with Bubba Dudley return but it was downhill from there. Daniel Bryan getting eliminated early, then you have Goldust come out next with his “shattered dreams” on the titantron. That was Vince at his peak “FU fans mode”. The way Big Show and Kane who nobody gave af about during that time just threw out the top stars like garbage and were in the final 4 is pathetic. Just to have Roman go all Super Cena and throw them out.
