      @@KeyWestWaterman , I just finished the cook part of the video now as I was talking with my daughters. Looks amazing, wondering if I missed a link to the recipe for the bisque. The octopus would be awesome for ceviche! I found one in Belize under a dock and the locals got it immediately. I had octopus ceviche in Costa Rica too on the Pacific side.
    I just saw some statistics saying that about half the crabs that lose both claws die, and taking 1 claw kills far less. So I'm with you, it's wrong to take both claws.

    Can't say it enough Aaron, I really respect your method's of harvest and how you handle the critters in the marine supermarket. It's way better to leave them with a claw however you know you could harvest both....and the technique of using a knife to harvest the claw ensures the health of the crab. Well done, just like the bisque. Cheers to ya 🤙🏼

    Just re-watched this episode and I think it is time for you to start small-batch bottled bisque! I promise to be your mid-west distributor. My only add to your Kimmy Swimmy recipe would be a fair helping of Sherry in place of the wine. Most of the alcohol burns off in the cooking process - what fun is that? Reason enough to keep a bottle on-hand! And I have to agree with Madeline, when it comes to heavy cream, one pint is almost the same as one cup, more is better! Outstanding episode!

    This was a cool episode. I knew there was crabs in Florida that you can only take one claw off, but couldn’t remember the name of them, so this was ready cool to see. And catching lobster is always cool. But just remember, we never split the tails in half. Cook them whole.

      @@SWFL_FISHING_239 There is a study that suggests crab mortality increases substantially if both claws are taken. And if you think about it, with no claws, the crab is reduced entirely to scavenging, and the males cannot successfully breed the females.

    I spoke with a FWC Biologist this summer and the new law allowing harvest of both claws is to increase their survival rate. Apparently studies showed that if they have both claws removed they go and hide while rejuvenating. Where as with 1 claw they will still try and defend their territory.

    • @KeyWestWaterman

    I think we call the "mother In law" a Southern Stargazer here in the GOM? Always had fun getting newbies to touch them on the top of the head when we were kids. POP!

    Great episode! Of all the years going to the keys i have never tried to catch stone crabs with hands because I didn’t think it was possible. Thank you for the knowledge! I just have to grow a set to try it😂. Love the knuckle cleaning as well!👍

    Rocking the subs man! Another really cool vid. I never did the catching by hand thing, the water always seemed to be too turbid around Naples/Marco Island area but there are crabs everywhere. Over the years, I gave up due to trap theft.

      My friend used to work on a stone crab boat near Marco Island. He would go out in the morning to set traps and then come back in the afternoon after checking the traps. His hands would be cut up from pulling in traps covered with barnacles. One day I went to visit him and he gave me a stone crab claw about the size of my fist. He made pretty good money working on that boat. I haven’t talked to him in awhile though. He started getting into drugs with a girl he met.

    You're quickly becoming my favorite content creator Aaron! Really love the way you seem to care about the creatures you harvest. Can you tell me what the cool long finned yellow, black and white fish was when you git on the first lobster in this video? Keep up the great work!

    Hey man, love all your vids, very therapeutic for me as I grew up next to the ocean and now am landlocked, but everytime i watch especially these POV underwater vids, i always wonder, do you ever worry about sharks? What are the precautions that are taken to avoid a big black tip/bull/ or tiger sneaking up on you? Just keep an eye out or are they scarce in this area? I would assume that with all this life, they would be around alot?

    • @KeyWestWaterman
      @KeyWestWaterman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      love to hear you enjoy them! and we see sharks all the time. no reason to stress about them, they don't show up ready to eat you. when we see them they are just curious as to what we are, and what we are doing. Honestly nothing out of the ordinary if you spend enough time in the water.

    Have not gotten up the courage to stick my hand in a stone crab hole. So I’ll stick to trapping for now. Ha! Will definitely try this recipe. We do something similar. I call it gulf coast gazpacho. Gazpacho soup with a few large key west pink shrimp, stone crab knuckle meat, and a de-shelled claw on the lower pincher. Top with a little cilantro a key lime, and some Cuban toast on the side.

    A little squeeze of key lime would brighten it up! And a rolling pin also works to get the leg meat if you do not happen to have an air compressor :)
