Pergolesi's original composition had no choir, and the two voices and strings were features of every Stabat Mater composed every year for the group of "Cavalieri"--there are quite a few of these compositions by different composers, all for the same orchestra. Years later, a few composers added chorus parts and arranged some of the solo parts for chorus to make the piece a lot bigger and louder, increasing the orchestra as well.
Thank you Voices of Music for this information! It is a beautiful piece, and your continued, and specialized experience in presenting these Baroque pieces bring to us so much pleasure! Thank you for your care and love for this period of music.
This is FANTASTIC. It makes me remember my childhood, singing in a church choir. My daughter loves it too. We were just discussing what music will live forever. This definitely will!
This has to be *the* archetypical performance of this piece - very conservative and competent execution of what comes to us intact, and utterly tasteful rendition of what is left to be interpreted. If Pergolesi could hear this, I’d like to think that he would be profoundly humbled and gratified.
I love the sort of paucity of instruments, feels really raw, at the same time, very expertly performed. I can actually hear the plucked bass vibrating my speakers. Wish I could give it 5 likes!!!
I'm not really in classical music, but I return regulary to watch this video. Over and over again I'm fascinated and touched by this wonderful performance.
Beautiful. Listening on Good Friday 2021. I was blessed as my church did this today (only the first- Stabat Mater Dolorosa). An absolutely heart-wrenchingly gorgeous work of music.
People today don't know how to accept their pain, their crosses, and to suffer the crosses of others. To grieve with them in their sorrows. This wonderful hymn teaches us, through the example of the Blessed Virgin Mary, what the pinnacle of compassion looks like. Something wonderous to aspire to.
For me, the Quando Corpus is the benchmark movement for any recording of stabat mater. The soloists are spectacular, such smooth, blending voices. The sound recording is also amazing.
Stabat Mater Dolorosa: 0:02 Cujus animam gementem: 4:04 O quam tristis et afflicta: 6:23 Quae moerebat et dolebat: 8:47 Quis est homo: 10:52 Vidit suum dulcem natum: 14:01 Eja mater fons amoris: 17:38 Fac ut ardeat cor meum: 20:04 Sancta mater, istud agas: 22:44 Fac ut portem Christi mortem: 28:04 Inflammatus et accensus: 32:01 Quando corpus morietur: 34:16 Amen: 38:04
I have utmost respect for the vocalists and the 5 ladies on the left too. The lads on the right do a magnificent job of the lower notes and I've seen "lute player" before delivering flawless tunes. Forgive me of my callousness if even that is a word. I just love music and this is really inspiring. I should be listening to Dubstep, but I can't help myself. I am so glad I subscribed to this gem of a channel. KEEP IT UP I LOVE IT!
Wow. For a rather impromptu-looking ensemble in a rather non-concert-looking venue, the preparation, performance, lighting, acoustics, and recording are all excellent. They bring out all the inherent spookiness of this rather dark and frightening piece of music. I've heard this on radio many times over the years but until today I didn't know what it was. Pergolesi. Interesting. According to Wikipedia he wrote this at age 26 and died a few weeks later. Sad end to an obviously great composer.
Amazing performance. I'm not an authority on the issue but according to me, Pergolesi's Stabat Mater is one of the hardest pieces to perform well. However, I think the execution here depicted was excellent. Thank you for sharing this with us
O quam tristis et afflícta .... around min 7 , such sorrow in the music! it is as if we could be there and hear the Mother weeping for her lost Son. so very touching, so moving !
Because of my fascination for this piece, I am now learning Latin through self-study. I am using Duolingo, and next will be delving into organized Latin grammar and syntax rules, plus vocabulary. Thank you Voices of Music!
I feel as if I'm standing before a master''s canvas after a loving restoration revealing colors, life and light unimagined. Such beautiful, profound music making.
The emotion rises ....Thanks due this Splendid performance. And i want to underline the presence of "archlute", in composizione of 2 Autors of neapolitans XVIII century CENTURY . In Rome, finge 50 yers , there us and open the souls a "music and poesy lounge" ." L'Arciliuto"

An especially beautiful and moving performance.Your performances consistently serve as a standard of excellence. Thanks for sharing such rare and refined gifts with the world.
This was a terrific, small ensemble of musicians playing as a background accompaniment (rather than as center stage, and thus competing with the soloists). The two soloists, Dominique Labelle [Soprano] and Meg Bragle [Mezzo-soprano], have exceptionally pleasing voices that blended enjoyably with each other in the 7 Duetti, and were uniquely moving in the Arias. Thank you, 'The Voices of Music,' and thanks for this wonderous upload.
Oh, my. This performance is soooo good. Thank you ever so much for sharing it with us all. Soon (24 more) you will have reached a quarter of a million views. Very well deserved!
Also big kuddos to your sound team for EXCELLENT quality. Most live performances on TH-cam are very hard to enjoy simply because the sound quality is terrible. This is very enjoyable. Thank you
An extraordinary work performed by an extraordinary ensemble. Truly beautiful! Thank you for posting. One of these days I'll get across the Bay to see you in person!
Fantastic! Probably the best performance I've heard, or one of the best for sure. Thank you for all your work, it's a joy to listen to your performances.
I was trying to work with this in the background, but ended up watching and listening to the whole performance instead of working. ;D

Interesting...what an exquisite composition!

I have been listening for this version for the last three years, and here I am listening to this version again. Simply put: Outstanding
Beautiful. Listening on Good Friday 2021. I was blessed as my church did this today (only the first- Stabat Mater Dolorosa). An absolutely heart-wrenchingly gorgeous work of music.
Yes, amazing music.
This is one of the BEST performances of music of any era I have ever heard! Period! (Pun sort of intended!)

For me, the Quando Corpus is the benchmark movement for any recording of stabat mater. The soloists are spectacular, such smooth, blending voices. The sound recording is also amazing.

Excellent Performance! I like the small Orchestra. Many Churches in the 18th century would have been lucky to have such an Ensemble.
