I have to say, even for a line containing DCC, MCC and Weird Frontiers, that looks absolutely mental! At some point I'll probably pick it up, but have to get more out of the previous three systems first! Great post as always, Justin. Keep up the good work and better content. Take care dude :-)
Nice! I think that the gladiator theme in RPG’s is probably under represented based upon popularity with the player base… you basically have Dark Sun, X Crawl, and a smattering of references elsewhere (Thyatis comes to mind). It’s ripe for picking!
The stretch goal content (like I can't believe its not fireball) was released in the "x-crawl extras" booklet. I was disappointed it wasn't put in the main book. It made me feel like the whole thin was 100% complete and they just dragged their feet on the fulfillment
When we played the earlier crawls, without the benefit of the X Crawl classes, it was an absolute blast… almost hoping for some absences for game night so I have an excuse to run the new crawls for the group. 😉
Played this back in the 3.5 days. Had my best best character death ever. I was pushed into a river of molten nacho cheese by a were-rabbit and drown after a number of failed checks.
I backed this one, I wish I’d picked up the modules to go with it but I’ll buy them little by little from my FLGS. I tried explaining the concept to my new gamer wife: it’s kinda like The Running Man, Hunger Games and mix in modern Roman Colosseum combat, all highly commercialized with sponsors and PPV.
@ If I get to run it, I plan to really get my players to fight for sponsorships. Drone Teleprompters that fly into the arena and have the Crawlers read an ad for “X brand energy drinks” or “Z brand clothing” try to lean into the gonzo of the game setting.
Not gonna lie. I won’t be getting this any time soon. But now I have a new game concept to build upon for when my group is missing most of the players again:
Nobody is talking about it do to the ridiculous premise. If it's a game in the DCC line that deserves the title of "Best RPG that nobody is talking about" that one is Weird Frontiers RPG.
Have to agree to disagree here. I was a backer on Weird Frontiers and ran it for a group, I’ve also ran X Crawls for a group, I found X Crawl to be a much more interesting game with a cleaner presentation. You feel differently, which of course is your prerogative.

Thanks my brother from another mother, and yes it is as mental as an RPG can get, gloriously so!
This inspired the hell out of me, One of my players just so happens to have a gladiator background PC.

Sweet video, thank you for sharing my friend. 😊
Thanks Dangar, glad you enjoyed it buddy!

Lol. Well, I guess I owe Brendan an apology then… I do hope they will make it available elsewhere for those of us that want more. 😉
Simple plots outside of arenas can be fun (mobsters, bookies, problems with another team, for example.)
I’m sure, but for myself, that just isn’t what makes it different.
Nice detailed review. Thinking of using an xcrawl module to throw my mcc group into.
I’ve had similar thoughts. It could even be some warlord’s sick little way of testing captives in MCC. Cool idea!
I have only read the books, but it looks like a lot of fun.

I bet that was a “hare” raising experience. 😉

Pretty good explanation… for my group, getting my game show host voice, and playing up the commercial aspect really sold it.

That is the way to go! Have agents trying to sign them to sponsorships in the green room!
DCC, XCC, and MCC are such great fun! very underrated though, sadly
Absolutely!
This is an amazing game.
It really is, welcome back Tim!
MERCI !
Lol
Commenting for the Evil Algorithmic Overlords.
It is appreciated.
I don't own any of them but I like the supplements for DCC. Good material to scavenge.
Lots to pick and use!

Works well for one shots especially!
