This man is very intelligent but was never shown the beauty of Van Gogh paintings. The pain that the painter endured by only selling one painting when he was alive , slicing off his ear , feeling the effects of schizophrenia, were the sadness expressed by Don McClean.
As a poet, writer, performer, and arts administrator, I want to share some of my observations of your reactions: 1) You are not stupid. Your off-the-cuff analysis of the works presented on your channel are some of the most insightful that I've seen. You genuinely want to know about the work, and that sets you apart from many who post reactions. You have a natural ability to find the real questions that shape the work, such as where did this come from, what am I to learn, and most importantly, what do I feel?; 2) You recognize that artistic work often has no single message. To explain, Vincent is certainly a tribute to the master painter, but is it only that? No. It is also a moving reminder to us, its audience, that we may do better as individuals if we look closely at the world, without harsh judgment or smug convictions, and if we do so, it is possible that we can change our mind; 3) I am very impressed by your questions about artists as "crazy." Please know you caused no offense. In fact, I started to giggle when you brought this up. Here are just some thoughts on this common belief: Most of us are not crazy. We pay mortgages, put our kids through school, we manage our checkbooks, but we do live in a curious place in the world. We are part of it, but we must also step outside its borders to interpret the actions and reactions of ourselves and those around us. I am so lucky to be able to do the work that I do, and I must admit, that sometimes it is very hard to constantly poke around my emotions and experiences, and then relay them back to people. And, to do so for people who I will most probably never meet, but to whom I owe my respect, because they are my readers and my audience. Even without my presence, this relationship is sacred, and I have an obligation to give my audience the best that I can offer. This leads me to the source of the "artists as crazy" belief. As artists, we are taught -- trained really -- that we need to be original, that we must create something singular, but it's worthless if it isn't true. Only great art is true. I'm sure you can imagine how hard it is to see the truth, all the time. Again, this is not a complaint. I am very, very lucky, and it still demands a lot to hunt for truth when on some days you can't even find your house keys. I've always believed, because I've experienced it, that this much internal work can indeed make you a bit off-kilter, a bit moody, and you have to accept, that most often, you really are the most eccentric person in the room. Also, there have been studies done on "art and crazy," and yes, it seems we really are more sensitive than the norm. This shocks no one in my field. Good on you for recognizing the people behind the work, better still, thank you for thoughtful observations. It is a delight to hear your views. In fact, it's why we artists do the work that we do. We live for these moments. Be well.
Do NOT say you're stupid. You are perceptive, thoughtful, and you know amazing melodies and lyrics when you hear them. Vincent had a very hard life, was plagued with various mental and physical ailments. (You can google a whole list, but not everyone agrees.) He was a remarkably gifted painter, a legend, though he only sold 1 painting of the hundreds he produced during his young life. McLean is gifted poet who effortlessly wrote the lyrics to fit Vincent's works and his sad life, and came up with a melody second to none. Thank you, MMB. A treat to catch this reaction with you.
There is a lovely lyric video that showcases Van Gogh’s paintings as the song plays. This song is hauntingly beautiful and a wise tribute to Vincent Van Gogh.
Watch the video with the pictures.. Nothing compares to seeing the art that's only being described in the song. Story story night.. fields of gold, old men, and self-portrait.

You are very perceptive mentioning art and painting. This song is actually a tribute to the mentally/ emotionally troubled artist Vincent Van Gogh. Beautiful song.

I think you are a very astute young man. Your observations are intuitive and so well thought out for a reactor unfamiliar with Van Gough and his story. I enjoyed your reaction and appreciate your thoughts on this song by Don McLean that is so beautiful and one of my all time favorites.
I think I just fell in love with you. I mean, you're clearly a handsome fellow and that is a given, but handsome blokes are a dime a dozen. I just fell in love with a human being opening his soul to being touched by a most poetic and vulnerable musical expression that has been part of the life-soundtrack of us genXers!!! The greatest irony of this for me is that you took off your glasses. Not only did you see even deeper, I could see the texture of your eyes and the way they moved in concert with your ear's reception of this ode to VVG, and your moments of blissful realization. Many people have this channel, this open highway to divine expression at what may seem like a high cost... addiction, mental illness, etc., VVG, Billy Holiday, my mom was one of those genius/bipolar people as well. You almost made me cry but no... you almost got me... nope, you're not gonna get me! Lol
Apparently Vincent Van Gogh was a tortured soul and with a tragic ending to his life. But his works of art showed the beauty of his soul in a way we all could share in it. And Don McLean took that beauty profoundly, to his soul and expressed musically what Vincent meant to him. I heard this in my early teens and didn't understand much of what he was singing about, but I know I liked it's calm. Then you eventually learn about Van Gogh's painting called, "Starry Night" and it's absolute beauty, then you hear the song again and you like it even better as you understand it a bit more as it was on the radio along with American Pie much of the early 70s. One of many great storytellers back then.
These lyrics are based on a real life story, the one about Vincent Van Gogh, a painter/artist who committed suicide in poverty. But now his paintings are worth millions each
Some facts about Vincent van Gogh: He painted almost 900 paintings in 10 years. ... Van Gogh's staples were coffee, cigarettes and bread. ... The truth behind van Gogh's ear is still unknown. ... 'Starry Night' was created in an 'asylum' ... Van Gogh was a pioneer of the post-impressionistic selfie.

@@karenwalsh1143The eleventh Doctor (played by Matt Smith) had an episode that revolved around an encounter with Van Gogh. It was marvelous, and is considered by many-myself included-to be amongst the best episodes. I don’t know if MMB enjoys SF or would be interested in reacting to a TV series but if so, Doctor Who would be a fun choice (starting with New Who 2005). Thing is, video takes a lot of editing to get onto TH-cam and I suspect MMB isn’t interested in doing that regularly. But I’m just reading the tea leaves from this side of the screen. I had the great honor, back in the 90's, of seeing 70... seventy... original paintings by Vincent up close and personal while they were on tour at the LA Musem of Art. No words. No words. As the curator of the New York Museum of Art once said, "Fifty thousand years of painting pivoted with Vincent Van Gogh." Up to that point, painting moved in the direction of greater and greater realism and portrayal of the real world. With Vincent, it all shifted to an emotional and mental interpretation of what the real world was about and meant. He was the greatest painter who ever lived. During his whole life, he only sold one painting. It was to his brother Theo.
For another connection to Don McLean, the lyrics to the huge hit song "Killing Me Softly With His Song," covered with chart-topping success by both Roberta Flack (1972) and the Fugees (1996), were written after the songwriter had been moved by hearing McLean.
You have a brilliant mind for music. I'm betting your personal life is sincere. Vincent Van Gough was a Dutch artist who suffered with severe mental illness & poverty. Painted over 800 works of art & only sold 1. Today his art is worth $ millions

Thanks, MMB - my favorite by Don... such a poet! there is a great live video, as well as another that features some of Van Gogh's art... Appreciate your reaction... (p.s. Tupac loved this.. I think it was played at his funeral...)
Van Gogh, one of the world’s greatest artists, during his time had a hard time finding a gallery that would hang his paintings. He died penniless and never saw his eventual success.

Thanks for taking the time and being willing to be open about your feelings.

WOW! I am really impressed by your reaction. You are an insightful and perceptive young man. Stay inquisitive and do not be afraid to be wrong. Keep asking questions and trying to solve for X and you will do good things.
You hit the nail on the head. I can tell you were feeling this not only in your mind but your heart. Vincent was the painter Vincent Van Gogh who had a very troubled life. He was schizophrenic yet a brilliant artist. He was so conflicted he ended up committing suicide. In his lifetime he never got the acclaim he deserved for his brilliant talent. Now his painting are worth millions in the art markets. Funny you should mention a rapper. I don't know much about Tupac if he was a rapper but he loved this song and everyone says Tupac was very poetic.
Actually, he was believed to have had a schizo-affective disorder-what used to be called manic-depression. Without medication a person’s life can easily spin wildly out of control-in between episodes of wild activity (in Van Gogh’s case, painting) and despairing depression that feels endless and hopeless. While incurable there are many medications now available and most patients can be substantially helped by at least one of them. (A dear friend from my college days had the condition-undiagnosed at the time, and with only one treatment choice. Progress can be a good thing…) I adore Van Gogh; his art boils over with passion, is accessible yet requires some investment (of attention and perception) on the part of the viewer to really enjoy it. But that creativity arose from a wellspring of pain if not (loosely defined) madness. Channeling it into art-fantastically beautiful art-is genius, and why Van Gogh is so celebrated.
Such a great song by Don McLean! It is his tribute to the sad life of the painter Vincent Van Gogh. He suffered from depression & committed suicide. He never saw any success during his life. But now his paintings are worth millions of dollars.
I recently saw a documentary about Van Gogh, and they brought out that he was bullied and terrorized by some of the rowdy teenagers in the town he was living in - you know, making fun of the ragged, weird artist kind of crap. One of them had a gun, and actually shot Van Gogh, but he refused to tell the authorities anything about it as he did not want the young man to be executed for murder. He actually was the one who asked for it to be characterized as suicide, but he was actually murdered.
Thanks for reacting to this. I agree with everyone else here - don't call yourself stupid! I think you might get a lot out of a TH-cam video of this song that has the lyrics written against Van Gogh's artwork. You can see how beautifully McLean describes Van Gogh's work. Either way, keep listening, keep reacting :)
On this album Don McLean had some other good ones. One that didn’t get recognized a lot is called “The Grave” which is even more spoken word than what you’ve already reacted to. Also, you’re not stupid! Thank you for sharing with us.
There is a massive difference between ignorant and stupid. Also, I don't waste my time listening to stupid people. Stupid people think they already know everything. You shine like a diamond, my young friend.
Not stupid. You are educating yourself and that is something a smart person does. It's nice to see someone from your generation appreciate the music and the poetry from my generation, or more my parents generation seeing I was 2 when this came out
It might be a good idea to google Van Gogh’s art. You will see a painting called Starry Night, it’s referenced in the song. But you gotta see more of Van Gogh’s paintings.
Check out Joni Mitchell's song about Van Gogh called 'Turbulent Indigo', the entire album of the same title is also one of her greatest later releases, so many potent songs "Talk sbout the madhouse, Talk about the ear, Madman hangs in fancy homes, tbey wouldn't let him near, He'd piss in their fireplace, He'd drag them through Turbulent Indigo.."
You are not stupid. I heard this song back when it came out and I didn’t realize what it was about. Today I know that Van Gogh was not appreciated when he was alive and he suffered from depression. After his death, his wife promoted his work and he finally got the recognition he deserved. It’s sad that he took his own life and never knew how famous and loved he became.
I wish you had done the official video, it has pics of Van Gogh paintings. Stary Stary Night is the name of one of his paintings.VanGogh did NOT paint the Mona Lisa. Leonardo da Vinci did. He's telling about Vincent's mental health issues and how he couldn't sell his paintings.
A beautiful rendition to the artist Vincent Van Gogh, one of the post-impressionist. Back in the days they were considered as garbage. Vincent barely sold a couple of pieces thanks to his brother Theo. He suffered from mental desease (depression) and he entered himself in Saint-Rémy Hospital. Nowadays his paintings worth millions and he is one of the most beloved and most popular painters in history. Vincent is considered a MASTER of light and colour. The song just need a "retouch", a correction. Today the theory about a suicide is almost discarded. Investigations point to an accident while he was with some kids of the village. To anyone who read this, watch the film "Loving Vincent". A beautiful PAINTED FRAME BY FRAME film.

you’re good at this!! It was moving to see your reaction.. It means a lot to share hearing music with someone for their first time.. one of my favorite songs, too.. haunting and beautiful..
you know it’s not easy being human…
music/art, for me! is a holy spirit…
You are definitely not stupid. You are very perceptive. Don McClean is amazing. The way he sings is so descriptive and beautiful.
the Mona Lisa was not Van Gogh-it was Leonardo da Vinci.
Van Gogh painted portraits, including many self-portraits. The eyes of most portraits tend to follow you.
yeah I winced on that too. They don't teach these things in school anymore. Not his fault.
This is such a beautiful song about a sad situation.
WOW! I am really impressed by your reaction. You are an insightful and perceptive young man. Stay inquisitive and do not be afraid to be wrong. Keep asking questions and trying to solve for X and you will do good things.
Always loved the line "snowy linen land" to describe a painting.
Progress can be a good thing…)
I adore Van Gogh; his art boils over with passion, is accessible yet requires some investment (of attention and perception) on the part of the viewer to really enjoy it. But that creativity arose from a wellspring of pain if not (loosely defined) madness. Channeling it into art-fantastically beautiful art-is genius, and why Van Gogh is so celebrated.
NIIIIICCCCE!!! 😊WAY TO GO MMB! 👍HOPE YOU HAD A GREAT EASTER SUNDAY!
An American treasure 🇺🇸❤️🌹
Such a beautiful song.... Another very powerful and meaningful song from Don McLean is called "The Grave" Very emotional
You're not stupid. A smart man knows when he don't know.
We've all done it , don't beat yourself about it ,just laugh it off and start again , xxxxx
@@Kathryne0816WHAT? I DID NOT NOW THAT? IS THAT REALLY TRUE???
@@karenwalsh1143 That's the conclusion made in the documentary. Their proof and conclusion made a shocking sense to me.
I Loved Everything about Don Mclean. One of the 1st songs I ever played on my guitar.
It's nice to see someone from your generation appreciate the music and the poetry from my generation, or more my parents generation seeing I was 2 when this came out
Well said, and your emotions were genuine !
❤ Respect to you. A very well done and deep reaction!
It might be a good idea to google Van Gogh’s art. You will see a painting called Starry Night, it’s referenced in the song. But you gotta see more of Van Gogh’s paintings.
Stary Stary night was a Vincent Van Gogh painting. 😊
Check out Joni Mitchell's song about Van Gogh called 'Turbulent Indigo', the entire album of the same title is also one of her greatest later releases, so many potent songs
"Talk sbout the madhouse,
Talk about the ear,
Madman hangs in fancy homes, tbey wouldn't let him near,
He'd piss in their fireplace,
He'd drag them through
Turbulent Indigo.."
Do NOT call yourself stupid!
We love you. ❤
If you watch a different video of the song Vincent you will see all the paintings he referred to in the song. It’s amazing.
" Castles In The Air " is my favorite by Don....
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
This song is in my top 50 greatest songs. If you want to know more about Van Gough watch Lust For Life starring Kirk Douglas. Great reaction
❤Your reaction☀️🤗
Ótimo react 👏👏👏👏
I love this song! Nothing is ever as good as American pie!
So good, BUT now you have to give the newest rendition a reaction - just released today by Home Free AND Don McLean. It’s a MUST - just WOW!!!
In that one verse he said portraits hung on...and veranda is another word for a type of porch
Just for your future ref lovey, Mona Lisa was painted by Leonardo Da Vinci. ✌🇬🇧
