Another point on John 8:54 is that Jesus asserts that the Father glorifies him. We know from other scripture that God shares His Glory with NO ONE! (Therefore, Jesus the Son must be God. NO ONE has seen the Father, but the Son...(John1:18) and so we ALSO know the only GOD that has shown himself to man is Jesus.
Correctly translated this verse actually says "Before Abraham existed, I did". Because Jesus is the firstborn of all creation. He's the first one created before everything else was created. Both the sanctifier (Jesus) and the sanctified (the body) come from the same father! (Hebrews 2:11)

I think also the Word took on the name Jesus actually Yeshua (Yahweh save in Hebrew), to signify the role he was playing in saving mankind. The whole point of the Bible is salvation for humans. Until you know your spiritual history you will never make sense of Jesu's sayings. Jesus was talking about life in the spiritual world - not on earth. He was explaining that as God's Only Begotten Son and first born of creation he existed before the Heavenly Prince, who incarnated on earth as the human Abraham, was created. He was referring to a time far removed in history when all the souls, then living on earth in Satan's Kingdom, were part of a vast spiritual family living with their creator in the heavenly realms. Christians are so obsessed with the idea of gaining admittance to Heaven that they give little or no thought as to what they did so long ago that required Heaven to send a Redeemer to save them. GODs all knowing but humans have free will and I think he tested Abraham to see if he would sacrifice his son and in my opinion GOD thought to himself if he can go through with it then so can I so I will send my son for the world. REVELATION 3:12. In this verse Jesus refers to his GOD and making us pillars in his GODs temple. If he was GOD why would he say that?
