  • I've been a huge fan of the LUMIX Natural Color Profile on the GH5 - but the VLOG on the GH6 and S5ii is sooo good and user friendly that I pretty much always use it now. I feel like I'm cheating on Natural in a way but things are so much better in VLOG.

    Re GH5s, the colour mode depends on what shoot mode you need. If it's 4K then Vlog (10 bit obvs) but if you need a VFR, then you're gonna need to switch the colour mode to natural, adjusting parameters. 120fps is awful in flat..noise all over the place, which is annoying because you lose out on grading in post.. Lots of sacrifices with the GH5s but it's my first cam and I love it.

    Great stuff. I just got the S5ii. My favorite is the built-in 709 profile but I bump up the saturation by 2 within the 709 color profile menu, and then it’s great out of camera. The Natural and CineD have always given me a weird lobster reddish skin. The 709 is better IMO and my new favorite (as long as you add that bit of saturation). 🤙

    I'm using the GH5 and GH6 combo so still using the natural profile on both cameras as its a lot easier/quicker to match colours

    V-LOG colors are the best for me. But in low light, I always use Natural or Cine-V on both my GH6 and my S5. On my S5II, I only use V-LOG because the standard profiles are very bad about detail rendering (too much sharpening and noise reduction).

    Agree! I’m stating to use Vlog more with my GH6 and loving it more each time I shoot. However, I do use the Natural profile with adjustments for videos that I need to turn around same day. Still like the look that I get with it.
    Great video.

    I use the GH5s and I’ve been shooting Vlog for about a year now. No going back because the results are totally on another level. I have used Cine D and Natural profiles and can boldly say that Vlog is superior. For best results I advise you check the spec sheet to know the dual native ISO for vlog. For GH5s it’s 800 and 5000. Shooting in these ISOs give the best results. So it’s all about knowing your camera more

    • @jayclas4023
      @jayclas4023 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You need a newer camera to see the difference. My S1 with full Vlog is far better then anything I’ve seen from Panasonic.

    Still on the gh5 here. Started with Nat back when it came out, now I'm using HLG.
    You might think HLG is for HDR but it's semi LOG, it's actually hybrid log.
    So I convert it to Davinci Wide Gamut, do the edit and finish it with rec709.
    HLG gives highlight roll off, not in the shadows though.
    -5 Saturation, Sharpness and NR and you do it in post.

    V-log all day for my S5II. I “709” with either the panny “nicest” LUT or one I got from color grading central(?). The latter LUT takes a “look LUT” better when stacking them…imo.

    Great video Caleb! Been shooting for 5 years now w/ multiple production companies/events/etc. and the 4 years I was on with the GH5/G85, natural did the trick for all of my client work. Made the switch over to Sony due to more companies asking if I can run a B-Cam with the Sony color science, but I find myself enjoying the image out of Lumix cameras a bit more. There's just something about the image to my eye. Looking forward to this months project shooting a mini doc on an incredible cinematographer from the Bay Area using a Canon FD MFT kit as a fun challenge to myself. Lugging around FX6's with anamorphic lenses sure is great and all, but there's something about having a compact kit that can get the job done, and gets more natural stories/moments to spark from a subject.

    I normally shoot standard on gh5. I tried natural first time recently. it's okay. then I tried Cine V. And I was blown away. in good light? awesome. but I agree. if you don't want to mess with Vlog and grading, and often for me, it's really not necessary, then Natural or Cine V does just fine. nuff said. I use v-log from an S5 and it is so easy to work with using resolve colour management. It converts it to 'rec709' before anything is done to the footage, and it looks great. It can end up being a quicker workflow than using one of the non-log profiles, like CineD2 (which I sometimes use), and it's a lot more flexible to colour correct or grade (as you mention in your video).

    I doubt if the correct exposure is understood by everyone when using v-log. Most of the time there are many noise complaints. Especially when shooting in a low-light environment. In these cases it is preferable to use another profile (natural, standard, flat, cine d). Nowhere can I find recommended settings (saturation, etc) for all other profiles except v-log. It would be interesting IF YOU GIVE US YOUR SUGGESTIONS....

    I started in video using the GH5s years ago and could not figure out how to make the VLog-L footage look nice. I just figured I was bad at correction/grading. But now with full VLog in the S5II, it feels like the old VLog-L is just a broken color profile. So now I'm stuck color matching between the two cameras..... for interview shoots, fun 🤦

    Question : Will V-Log footage from GH6 stay in "V-Log" state after transcoding to ProRes or DNxHD? Or i have to convert it to Rec709 first and then transcode to other format codecs?

  • @bodhibra6988
    @bodhibra6988 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I think I’m doing something wrong with my exposure for V-Log, whenever I convert my V-Log footage to a rec709 format it looks terrible and blown out every where but I was told I have to overexpose by 2 stops so I’m honestly lost and I’m starting to hate film now 😂

  • @christhake
    @christhake 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I have found in low light, dim lighting, even with a higher iso on my s5ii, I get this noise distortion in the shadows. I can even see it in v log on the display screen. I don’t understand this. It’s a reddish distortion that becomes clearer, so I’m really confused how to film v log in low light when you can’t overexpose shadows when the sky is black. The area it distorts is only -4 and so should be fine.
    Again, it’s some weird reddish distortion on the white in the shadowy parts. Why isn’t it clean? V log just creates all the noise distortion. Crushing doesn’t remove the noise, it sort of brings it out. I find cinema helps have a clean image. The blacks are black, no noise. I need more light sure but at least I know.
    I hear about v log having all this dynamic range but the distortion in low light shadows (not black parts just low lit) is un fixable and ugly. I feel if the shot is under exposed it should just be a dimly lit clean image. Exposing to the right only works with control. How do you get such clean images. Is my sensor broken? And yet it’s just v log I get the issue. I don’t see how people get all these low light shots in v log when mine has ugly unfixable distortion in mine 😢

    So from my understanding of this, you've switched to V-Log because it's superior to V-LogL from the GH-5? I've been a photographer for over 10 years, but just now starting to get more into video with my G9. Is it worth the upgrade price for V-LogL on that?

    I really don't agree with your description of V-Log L vs V-Log. They are one and the same and they both provide the full colour gamut of the sensor. Only difference is that the L caps out earlier in the highlights. They are exposed and processed in identical fashion.
