Overheating a Train Engine in Reverse to Beat the Bonus Timer in Derail Valley!

  • Hey everyone and welcome to Derail Valley Overhauled! In this episode we are continuing with a load but unfortunately due to the orientation of the train we have to run this entire load in reverse! This engine is a front radiator locomotive which means running in reverse runs the engine extremely hot and to attempt to beat the bonus timer we have to run it HOT and at the overheat limit!

Everyone: "Hey kAN, don't put your hand on a Stove Burner while it's on."
kAN: Makes a video of him placing his hand on a hot stove to see what happens.
Edit: By the way, you can literally use a Triangle intersection to move your loco to the other end of the cars so it's facing the right way.
Stop the whole train before the intersection. Decouple. Run Loco across the intersection. Flip the switch to the other line, back up past that switch and the next one. Flip that switch. Bingo bango you are now facing the cars in the opposite direction. That's how we do it in the real world without turn tables and why Triangle intersections exist.

Tip 1: Now you've got the long license get used to using the train brake. If your pulling and have to slow down in a curve and you use the independent, the cars will just push the engine right off the track.
Tip 2: No need to slam on the train brake fully. Most of the slowing down can be done using the first couple of notches of the train brake and the pressure to release builds back up faster than full brake.

    Got some more Tips:
-The main hotkeys for stuff you'll need to remember are the ones for the Train Brake (N & M) and the Independent Brake (K & L).
-To not damage anything, you'll want to couple up at 10kph or less.

Steel Mill, Food Factory, City Southwest, Harbor, Machine Factory, Iron Ore Mine West, Forest South, Sawmill, Oil Well Central, and Military Base all have turntables.
Goods Factory, Coal Mine, Iron Ore Mine East, Forest Central, and Oil Well North, each have a reversing loop around the perimeter of the facility.
Farm is the only location without a method of reversing the direction of a locomotive, but it is between the Steel Mill Wye and Oil Well Central, so reversing here is only mildly inconvenient.

As you get more licenses the time bonus time becomes less and less. You are going to have to hook up the train before you take the job eventually. If you are ever planning on taking multiple jobs the _only way_ to get the time bonus is to hook up the cars first.
    Some other tips:
Cars have their job ID on them this makes them much easier to identify before you take a job.
Go through all of the jobs on tables before making a decision on which one to take. Some are objectively better than others.
Car, cargo, loco, and environmental (hazmat) damage will bankrupt you later on if you are not careful.
Do not take any licenses that raise the insurance copay more than you can comfortably make.
If you hear a car derail, full stop. Rerail. Start back up. The most likely cars to derail are those at the front.
A stop watch is available for purchase at one of the shops (I think the harbor) for 5k. It is extremely useful for keeping track of time left.
Station offices always have an antenna with a green light on the top of them.
A locomotive remote(25k) for the diesel locos is available at one of the shops.
A hand car(5k) and a caboose(25k I think) are available for purchase at 2 of the shops. Their are 2 sheds on the map that need to be unlocked.
The caboose has a range extender and quick charger for the locomotive remote, and a service/license terminal.
I have only played in VR so some of my experiences my differ.

The speed limits are more of a speed in which you should not exceed to avoid losing control of your train. I would suggest keeping your speed at least 10 km/h under the posted speed so you can have a better chance at being able to brake.

    • @joonahuikuri6662
      @joonahuikuri6662 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@Dude13450 It does reduce the water consumption especially when climbing hills.
In the vanilla game the steamer uses up a lot of steam and thus water even if the train is stationary but the regulator is open. This should not happen.
In reality the steam consumption should depend on the speed of the train, as steam is only consumed when the piston's valve opens when the train moves. This means that steam consumption increases with speed and is (almost) zero when stationary with full regulator.

You can move the consists around in the yard when you have concurrent job license >1 and you need to shunt them around. DON'T leave the yard with the consist without accepting the job. The job will despawn. Other turnaround options include the triple point "Y" junctions, I'm sure you'll work out how. Also, when you have followed a route you'll find the points are left as set. You could use the triangle intersection to turn around. Drop your load before the intersection. Go through the first switch, the second. Stop, flip second switch, go back through the second and through the third. Stop, flip switch, go back through the third. Go through the first switch, reattach load. Go through intersection and continue as normal. It is basically a 3 point turn but with a train.

So when you talk about air brakes - Im a truck driver IRL and big rigs use exactly the same system for braking. The air pressure actually releases the brakes, therefore creating a built-in safety system where if you blow an air line and pressure is lost, rather than having a runaway truck that could smash through cars and kill people, instead the brakes will lock up and force the truck to stop. However this can also cause crashes. There has been unlucky moments where air lines leading to the trailer on a big rig broke, so the trailer locked up brakes at highway speeds and caused a jack-knife. Its still safer than a runaway system, but its not perfect.

Just starting the video, but: There is a roundhouse in town if you want to turn around. There are at least 2 "Y"s in town you can turn around there too. And, especially in the harbor, one can usually get behind your load on those dead ends by going up a clear siding and getting behind it...works well with a switcher....one can usually fit two switchers in there...this would mean you'd push the load out instead of pulling and then you'd need to turn around if you intend to head out of town to the west (which works well, cause the two "Y"s are near the west side of town)...or...head out of town east to get to your destination. You can turn around anywhere there is a "Y"...even out on the "mainline".

Even with light loads having atleast 2 is gear for better acceleration with less wheel slip, you can still turn them on the turn table 2 at the same time but if there is a T intersection nearby it's eazyer to turn the loc's around using it instead.

As someone else mentioned, there is a stopwatch (I believe at the harbor) that will help you with timing. I think it was either $2500 or $5000 I forget which

I know your insurance company is currently being very generous, but they're going to _raise_ your copays as you take on licenses for bigger trains and bigger, riskier jobs, so here's a couple money-saving tips for the future:
If you print out your itemized bill after a job, you'll notice a big part of it is maintenance and refueling. If you just pay your fees outright as soon as you get into town, the Derail Valley Railroad Company will happily handle maintenance and fuel _for_ you... for a _surcharge_ on top of the cost of the actual repairs and resources. Again, right now your insurance provider is eating most of that, so it's actually more cost-effective to let the Company do its thing, but as your copays go up and you're paying more and more of your own bills, you'll want to buy the maintenance license so you can use the service sheds yourself. You'll start paying for _your own_ fuel, sand, and repairs, but you won't be paying the surcharges anymore.
On the topic of maintenance and fuel, you can save on these by just remembering one thing: Trains only actually touch a _tiny_ part of the tracks. That means less friction, which means trains can coast _really, really far._ Consequently, you can actually go pretty far by getting up to speed and then bringing the accelerator back down to idle, only using it to maintain your speed, like on uphill grades. Idling and coasting saves fuel, and also gives the engine a chance to cool down after acceleration, meaning less wear on the engine.
Wear on your brakes, similarly, can be slowed by _nudging_ your brake handles, or by flicking them on and off. What you've basically been doing is throwing the emergency brake whenever you just want to lose a few kph, and that aggressive stopping wears down the brakes _and_ loses you the time spent waiting for the system to re-pressurize. More gentle braking slows you down without bringing the train to a halt.

Just saying. You crossed over several wyes. You can park your load (apply handbrake) at the switch. Back up the right side, flip the switch. Go right again, then you turn yourself around. Use the Wyes to your advantage

To turn the train around you can use one of the round houses, or just use one of the triangle shaped junctions (works like a 3 point turn)
