What Is A Juggalo? (Are Juggalos Heyokas?) - ICP Lore

  • Here is the next Lore video, as promised. I have eluded to this theory of mine for quite some time; I think that Juggalos are actually Magikal Beings known as Heyokas. In this video; not only do I present this theory of mine and how I came to it, but I also break down the basic definition and history of the word "Juggalo"
Let me know if I missed anything about the history of the word. I feel like I may have spaced a story from "Behind The Paint"
Also let me know if there are more connections between Juggalos and Heyokas that I have left out or over-looked.

Good work here once again brother! The first recorded lyric of “juggalo” is the Beverly Kills intro “See me breathe fire and swallow a knife, right, I ain’t swallowing nothing Jack. But I can Juggalo like you never thought you’d ever know.”
At this point I’d say that lyric turned out to be true… no one thought they’d ever know the extent juggalos have gone today, and we keep going!

I'd be very interested in seeing more parallels regarding the Heyokas. I've had similar thoughts about ICP and them having this sort of prophet energy to their music. I know they've had verses that say they're voices of a higher power, or as they put it the Dark Carnival, but I do find this particular angle fascinating and would love to see what else you can dig up and what kind of thoughts it might provoke. Good shit dude! Keep it up!

The culture has changed waaay to much since my hayday, which was 1998-2008. After 2008 I sort of became a little bit of a hermit, and stopped interacting with pretty much everyone, people in general but that includes the Juggalo community. When I started to sort of resurface a bit and began to touch base with the community again... I don't know, it felt like everything was way different now. Everything from major things to minor and simple things were suddenly different amongst Juggalos from my own days. Obviously the split between ICP and Twiztid changed a lot, but other things changed which were a result of outside influences seeping into the culture.
I'll try to list some changes here, and note which ones I believe are minor and major:
    > Major: The birth of the "famkid", and possibly the worst thing in my opinion to happen to the community. Yes, even worse than the PSY split in 2012 when Twiztid left. Now the famkid had already started to crop up around the end of my own personal era (again, 98-08), and before I sort of went underground and away from everything I was very vocal about it being a bad idea. For those who don't know what I'm talking about, a famkid is basically a juggalo who is ultra-fanatical about the idea of juggalos being a family. Some of them literally believe a random juggalo should go to lengths such as letting another random juggalo live in your house if they were recently kicked out, despite not knowing said person at all. It's fuckin' ridiculous. Maybe it's just me (well, actually it was still Juggalo culture in general before the family shit took serious root), but I don't give a shit who you are. If I don't know you personally, then I don't know you. I'm not going to open my home, wallet, bank account, and social security number to you just because you like the same shit I do. Anyways, yeah a famkid is somebody who is extremely fanatical about the family aspect of the Juggalo community. They wholeheartedly believe every single Juggalo on Earth is basically their blood family. I was always very vocal in this being a bad idea for several reasons, one of which I will explain in a point after this one.
Now, a lot of people claim ICP started the family idea. However, from my perspective and y'know - actually being around during that era and owning pretty much every piece of media that was being released, going to shows actively, etc, it was actually Twiztid that started the family shit. Now, there are small elements of it in Mostasteless, but it wasn't until Freek Show that they really started to push it (Jamie, We Don't Die: "Everyone of yall means everything to me, we bleed for yall, that's why we call it family"). Mirror Mirror had the family shit all over the place (even an entire fucking song dedicated to it), and by the time Green Book came around the family shit was in full swing, Juggalos themselves were all aboard the 'family train', and ICP themselves began to roll with the punches. So - thanks Twiztid. Thanks for introducing what is arguably the worst aspect of being a Juggalo, and why we spent so many years fighting against a shitty reputation given to us by the media, and still deal with it to this day.
    >Major: Here is one of the biggest, if not *the* biggest reason the family shit isn't a good thing: Juggalos will nowadays take pretty much anybody and everybody in from all walks of life and give them a community. This SOUNDS great... on paper. In reality, it's shit. Pedophiles, thieves, dirtbags, and scum of all types who normally have been outcasted for a reason (you know, an actual reason other than a bullshit one like you're poor/nerdy/whatever) will now (and did) flock to the juggalo community. Over time the cracks in the family philosophy started to show, when you had idiots and dirtbags doing dumb and terrible shit, and then the media would cover it, often finding out that they were Juggalos and then making that fact front and center of their media coverage of whatever they did. Example, two "Juggalos" here in NM in 2014 r-worded and then hacked a woman to death with hatchets. When they were discovered and brought in by the police, they were wearing fuckin' hatchetgear. Incidents like this occurring all over the country is what led people to believe Juggalos are pieces of shit when most of us are just regular fucking people who did nothing at all. Then, to make shit even worse somehow, groups of famkids started getting together and calling themselves gangs. Ever wonder where the FBI got the idea in their head to stick us on that stupid ass list? Well, it didn't come outta fuckin thin air - it was because of a bunch of famkids being morons. Because of that list, and by extension because of famkids, Juggalos now face ENDLESS fucking trouble from every direction. Again, the family idea was the worst thing to happen to this community.
I was going to include some more things that I noticed changed, but realized how long I went on a rant against the family shit for that this comment has probably gone on for long enough. If people want to know more I'll be happy to reply on changes from my general era (98-08) to nowadays, but to prevent this from turning into a wall of text I'm going to cut the comment here. If you made it this far, godspeed.
EDIT: I thought I should probably include here, that I'm not saying there's anything wrong with showing love to other Juggalos you meet/see. Absolutely nothing wrong with that at all. I just think that there are a lot of people out there who took the family aspect way to far, and I do think Twiztid is partially to blame for that, because for a long time they acted like they would go out of their way to help random Juggalos. I even remember Jamie Madrox saying about how he'd let a Juggalo that's down on their luck stay with him for a few. Yeh, lol. Maybe that was true at one point (as unlikely as that is) but it sure as hell isn't now.

Interview with guys who did the beats, production, and such. I can’t be the only one interested in the inner workings, bts of making music and what it means to you the artist. Like what are your fave albums or influences? I want inside your mind, I’m a fiend like Bray Wyatt.

I don't know if you're offending natives but I heard there were a lot of ICP fans up in northern Arizona amongst the Navajo. Not sure though. I've been near, but never actually on the Navajo Nation.
But then, I'm not sure what actually attracts them to the fam. Not sure if it's the tribalism, the music, sacred clowns or just having an excuse to run around with a tomahawk. Hehe

Ok I have to correct you on the word Heyoka and how you say it and please don't take this as me being a asshole, but it is said Heyoka, the first part He is said like hey and then yo ka Heyoka, It is a lakota word for scared clown, how you said it would be spelled Hiyoka. Sorry I'm Lakota and I had to correct you on the saying of the word. The heyoka is a kind of sacred clown in the culture of the Lakota of the Great Plains of North America. The heyoka is a contrarian, jester, and satirist, who speaks, moves and reacts in an opposite fashion to the people around them. So it's He (Hey) yo ka. Sorry if I sound like a dick that is not my intention I just like to educate others on things i do know about and have been around. Mitákuye Oyás'iŋ

I don't think your analogy comparing Juggalos to sacred clowns or Heyoka to really work.
Sacred clowns are a religious order who provided an invited and expected part of public festivities and religious events. They did have license within their societies to satire and break norms to a degree, but also had to take the paint off and go back to regular life the next day.
If we substitute "sacred" with "serious", a fair comparison to sacred clowns in modern Ameircan life would be the White House correspondents' dinner where comedians roasted the president directly.
Juggalos are a subculture evolved out of a musical fandom. Deadheads, Phish fans, some of the hyphenated-punks, Juggalos are like them.
I also agree with the class component as a frequent feature of Juggalos. From the rust belt to the rest of the post-industrial wasteland around the world, Juggalos are frequently working class or poor. With that, many also lack access to needed medical care.
MCL. I tried to keep it short.

I am from Medicine Route, I come from the pine ridge, Indian reservation. I am Oglala Lakota, and you comparing this Juggalo subculture to a thunder dreamer, you were insinuating things that you do not understand, you don't understand what a Hayoka is, first of all, if you do not come from one of the nations of the seven Council fires, you are not a Hayoka, this is all we need, some foolish white man, trying to trivialize one of our most powerful and sacred dream societies because you think that some white man in Detroit could possibly be one, there are things that make you a thunder dreamer, there are things that connect you to them, that you would not ever be able to comprehend, I will not go into it here, so you need to face it Juggalos are not Hayokas, saying this, you are disrespecting my family, you are disrespecting the bloodline I come from, you are disrespecting, so many, Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota People. And you're not even pronouncing the word right.
