Your genuine account of the process is what I needed when I was a student at uni. I graduated 10 years ago and I still remember my classmates asking me questions just before a test or an exam: "Did you study for it?" "How long did you study?". Then they would proceed to belittle my hard work if I studied less than them or made themselves look miserable when I studied longer than them. The answers to those questions are not genuine value of the work we have put in while preparing for the test. Sometimes it goes faster for us and sometimes we spend weeks learning 20 pages and come to the exam only to fail it. I've created my own learning techniques which helped me learn the knowledge in a few days comparing to my classmates' weeks of intense memorization. It is in the way how you do it, not how long you do it. And everybody has to find their own techniques, and follow the schedule that is most convenient to them. By the way, my friends didn't want to even try my methods. I guess they preferred to struggle.

his video is so relatable. Thank you for posting it. I also realized in this last year that less is more when academia is concerned. I can't keep focus on my research all day. I get way more quality work done when I spend less time on it and I stop beating myself up because I am not working constantly on my research. Ideas need time to shape and grow. It is not just consuming a bunch of things and spitting another bunch out.
I love how you promote not killing yourself in one day because it will hurt you later in the week. You do not have to work 12 hour days to be successful in what you are doing and I love how you show that. Honestly, I like to read information and then let it be in the back of my mind for a day and then come back to that piece of information. Even if I am not actively studying it I am letting the ideas form or solidify in my mind.

Strewth some days in my history PhD I don't write any words in a day and just read or right notes. Other days I might just write 500 words. Churning out heaps of words in a day is not necessarily productive especially if those words are utter crap. You do what works for you. I still get all my work done on time with great results. I won best MA thesis at my uni last year so I am obviously doing something right.

I’m beginning my doctoral journey (EdD) this week. I found your channel when I was thinking about it and you inspired me.
These videos are so helpful, thank you! The Ph.D. experience is isolating. I am in the midsts of writing my dissertation - it took me a full day to revise my methods chapter yesterday. Seeing others in the same process is motivating and makes the experience less isolating. Best of luck to all and yay for progress! :)
I do not usually comment on TH-cam videos, but you are truly an inspiration. Working on a dissertation is such an isolating and lonely experience that sometimes I question why I am putting myself through this. But your letter at the end truly hit the spot. Thank you! You are doing awesome! And you make such an impact by sharing your journey with the rest of us who are going through a similar one.

I just wanted to add that some of my friends who just finished their PhD spent Monday to Friday writing non stop from 9 to 5. Often writing 2000 words a day. One might sound impressed but as they said themselves those words were not always good words and after editing may have only kept a couple of paragraphs. Both of those friends needed extensions. I did as you do and worked on what I felt like that day and did a bit of this and a bit of that. Handed my MA in on time and won awards. It is not the amount of words you pump out each day that is important it is the quality of work you do that gets you to where you want to go. No point assessing the quality of one's work until the end product is finished.
I really appreciate your vlogs, Kaelyn. I’m only writing a bachelors thesis but some of the, like, ways to protect your mental health and also the way in which I cannot talk to my boyfriend (not that your partner is like this) who is not an academically inclined person but need actual people like your writing group (I have one too!) totally resonates. Edit: Also, and especially, how some days you are working a ton and you have no idea if you are being productive because you don't have a tangible "I did x words today" to tell people. I recently had a week where I really had no idea if all the reading I was doing was all a waste of time, and then one day it just clicked and I started making connections between all the reading I had been doing, and honestly this is where the novel ideas comes and you can't say that's not at least as important if not moreso than the actual writing or the tangible metrics people want.

Kaelyn! Girl! I'm usually a silent watcher but i to comment this week. i applaud you for doing everything you do ON TOP of your studies. Running businesses, not to mention the hours of filming and editing and graphic design that youtube/social media takes, alongside working on your dissertation is no small feat. and when your studies your content, it's like double the pressure. I had to take a step back from youtube/writing my book bc i'm in the final stretch of grad school and those things had to take priority, but i just had so much on my plate and it was stressing me out. maybe take some time off of everything that isn't the dissertation? just to free your mind a little bit?
writing is also just such a vulnerable process no matter what the subject matter. Putting your words and thoughts on paper for other people to critique is grueling. Just know that our work is never as bad as we think it is (: anyways, sending you lots of love and good vibes. It'll all work out the way it's supposed to 🤍

I think when you feel like you are being repetitive, you are actually just re-caping for the next idea that is brought up. When I did my master's degree in history, I always thought I was being repetitive, but it was necessary. Also every time I write, I think about what my Highs school English Teacher said about research papers and how she wants it to be "research dense and I want you to explain everything", so I kind of explain it like the reader has no idea what I am talking about and if it is too much I can just have someone else look at it to see if it is too repetitive. Overall, repetiveness is not always bad.
Kaelyn hey I really feel you when you said you don't feel that you are progressing while writing.. Most of the time what we do is to read and write what we understand as people working with texts. As a legal scholar, I always find it very hard to articulate my thoughts in legal studies. What you have is only the situation, the regulation (if there is any) and you! You read and try to make an interpretation of the situation and try to find a way out of it. Mostly there isn't any -technical- methodology, any qualitative or quantitative data to analysis.. So you work on legal documents and it is normal to feel this way. Don't be hard on yourself.
This comment means so much! Working with legal records is such a unique and challenging experience. It is so much more difficult to produce words than when I have worked on social histories.

Do you have any recommendations on finding a good Matcha? I've tried a pre-mixed version from my local store, then got a powder (so I can take it with me places) and they taste nothing alike! Weird. The pre-mixed was actually sweet so I'm not sure which is more authentic. Dissertation: Your comment about reading something new every time you work on your dissertation reminded me of something I heard a historian say about the U.S. Civil War: You can study the war your entire life and still never know everything. And that was only 4 years. If you're reading the same information in two different books, one of them probably shouldn't be published! You've got this - maybe some of that new information will spark something you didn't realize/know and it will help things fall into place. But you're doing the right thing in taking a break when you get frustrated. Maybe doing something else will spark something!

Legal interpretation is hard I would speak to a law professor or lawyer and get their input into how to write this section - they are very good at methodically going through this

Would you say your research is more qualitative? I'm just getting started on my BA honours thesis this year and I'm overwhelmed with how to possibly do all of this research, keep track of everything, and then code for themes to write about. Any tips??

A 6year Phd seems so very very very looooong but probably normal for non science area. How does this work for someone progressing to being having a PhD and potentially as a supervisor for someone as an academic (sure you are graduate student now but you will be a Phd graduate soon).. it seems to be a very indulgent process for your *now* but not a growth process for the supportive future person.
I am not quite sure what you mean? I don't plan to remain in academia but if I did, I think it is important to transparently offer examples of what this process is like. I would benefit, personally, from knowing that my professors and supervisors also struggle with writing and how it is that they conduct research.
