How I Removed Mildew From The Old Canvas

Old Canvas is gross. If you're not afraid to risk the health of your lungs, you can remove mildew, (some) stains, and start to bring your canvas back to life.

Recently bought a Wildernest and the cavas is in the same or worse condition that yours was. Did you take the canvas off the truck at all, or did you do all the cleaning while it was installed? I'm thinking of maybe taking mine off and throwing it in the washing machine with bleach...bad idea?

I cleaned all my canvas while it was on the camper. Having it on the frame will allow you to access all the panels relatively easily. You definitely could remove it for cleaning but I don't see it fitting inside of a normal washing machine. But with that concept in mind, maybe you could soak it inside of 55 gallon drum or something similar. Let me know how it turns out.

Does canvas easily get mildew and mold on it once wet or do you have to store it a long time while damp/wet? Will drying it out as much as possible prevent it or is it just likely to happen?

I have a vanagon as well. Are you referring to just the pop top canvas that needs cleaned or is there mold throughout?

Can't always pressure wash it after scrubbing, the interior for instance

Do you have to re water proof i got a rooftop tent for super cheap and its covered in mould and nildew i did what you did but i think its destroyed the waterproofing of the tent

It’s very likely that if you gave it a good cleaning you removed a lot of the wax and/or oil that repels water.
