  • I've had a great many people ask my opinion on the Weldon products so I thought I would do a comparison. These are my first impressions. Let me know what kind of tests you would like to see for future comparisons. At the end of the video I also show and update and give some explanations on Wednesdays' video

    Weldon-4 is great, I’ve used it several times and it dries crystal clear. It does allow a little repositioning after application (few seconds) but that’s about it. It needs at least 48 hours for cure time when building an aquarium for optimum results. It does have an odor but it doesn’t last long. I can’t wait to see your test results.

    In the filter do you need to have that high of a flow rate? Basically I’ve built the same thing using only lava rock and I’m considering throwing some sand and gravel in there but I only run about 60 gallons per hour through there and it’s probably close to that size about 5 inches deep 6 inches wide and the whole container is 30 inches long, the only difference is it’s a black planter box and I have pothose in there.
    Also what would be the difference between this and just having deep gravel in your tank and not cleaning it and just using a power head or something to move water in the tank around?
    I love this one I think it looks awesome I would throw a few shrimp and snails in there too. Lol

    • @FishmanEricRussell
      @FishmanEricRussell  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Shane! That's one of the great things about this style of filter, the flow rate doesn't matter much as long as the extremes are avoided. The only difference between this and having a deep bed tank is you are less likely to mess around with this and more likely to want to move things around and change plants and the like in a tank. Always great seeing you!

    • @FishmanEricRussell

      In theory. Weldon has some additives to thicken it whereas methylene chloride does not. It also depends on what polycarbonate you're using. Some things called plexy aren't as high quality good acrylic.

    Nice video! Two questions: 1) Would you say me MC is good choice for putting together a larger tank in terms of the strength it generates? 2) There's a lot of talk on the inherent toxicity of MC. What are your precautions in handling the stuff?

      I actually never use it for large tank construction. I much prefer glass and silicone. I use acrylic almost exclusively for filter builds, though I am planning a large river build with it. funny how you post a video on plastic solvent and found my bottle of model kit "cement" today .
    then again modelling solvent is probably toxic and it does melt various plastic from ABS to PP.
    but i wont be using for aquarium projects... i do have 7 unassembled model kits.
    i have some scrap acrylic. took them from tent cards from my former work place, they have magnets which i removed. i plan to use them as dividers in my sump build and using one plate as a float valve holder.
    the idea is to recirculate half/one third of my return pumps flow in the sump. when the pump is low and flow goes fully back into the tank when its high... so it varies the water flow in the tank
    i want to replace my pump with a controllable DC pump. but that's on hold with corona... along with my idea to replace my RO system with just a dual carbon + Dual DI Resin filter.
    my tap water is cleaner since they replaced the building old main water pipes made of iron with Stainless. so my issue is just chlorine/flourine.

    • @FishmanEricRussell
      @FishmanEricRussell  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for sharing that with me! DC motors are much easier to regulate flow with. I'm planning some very low flow rate delivery systems with one. All on hold for the moment of course. Thanks for taking the time to come by!

    Unlike paint, stain or dye that could come off, if I wanted a permanent mark on the acrylic could I mix the Methylene Chloride with color before applying it with a paintbrush.

    • @FishmanEricRussell
      @FishmanEricRussell  ปีที่แล้ว

      The second the methylene chloride touches the acrylic it marks it. If you could get a dye dissolved in it, you would have to be extremely accurate in it's application as there is no redo. I've never tried to do this so take any advice I give you with a grain of salt, but I would suggest mixing powdered acrylic in as well to thicken it up. This might prevent running. What gauge needle do you normally use on syringes, and what did the Weldon 4 applicator come with? It seems a bit thinner in the video.

    • @FishmanEricRussell
      @FishmanEricRussell  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The syringes come with a 20 ga. needle. The exact size doesn't matter as it is the control the plunger gives that I really like. That and the ability to remove all of the air so I don't have to worry about the compression of the gasses altering the rate of flow. The dispenser that comes standard has a slightly narrower gauge but the things I don't like about it are: it tends to clog in short order, can't remove all of the air and the lid can leak. Hope that helps clarify things and thanks for watching!

    • @RFC-3514
      @RFC-3514 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FishmanEricRussell - But if the Weldon glue has some sort of thickening agent, a narrower needle means it will require a bit more force, which probably makes the "lag effect" caused by air in the applicator even worse. It probably clogs faster than a thicker needle would, too. The lid leaking is the cherry on top, though. :-P

    • @FishmanEricRussell
      @FishmanEricRussell  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RFC-3514 Liquid isn't compressible. So even though a bit more force is necessary you still don't get that gush of extra solvent you can get with the plastic bottles. I never used the Weldon long enough to see if there were additional clogging issues. I really didn't like the smell. I rather just dissolve some acrylic shavings in ME if I need a thicker solution. I used some in a demonstration video to compensate in a mocked up bad weld situation. th-cam.com/video/44_vQ7qieLA/w-d-xo.html

    • @RFC-3514
      @RFC-3514 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FishmanEricRussell - Yes, I know liquids aren't compressible, I just meant that a thinner needle and a thicker liquid require more force (regardless of gas compression), so it makes using their style of applicator even harder.
      Anyway, I was vaguely interested in the Weldon glue(s) because the extra "adjustment" time can be handy, but it's really hard to find them where I live, so I think I'll stick to plain MC.

FYI, A trick to prevent the liquid from "leaking/spilling" out from the syringe when using a Hypo Glue Applicator is to squeeze the bottle while holding it upright to push out air. While still squeezing, turn it upside down and slowly release. By doing this, the liquid is "vacuumed" to prevent from spilling.
