Can not take short cuts on the BMW Mini due to rubbish build in the 1st place... Good Luck...

Any decent engineering shop would be able to TIG that back up then reshape and skim it. It would be far cheaper than replacing the head plus you'd still have original parts on the car. Although on saying this just finding a decent shop that'll actually carry out a repair will be a challenge since these days most have the attitude of replace rather than repair.

Looking back at this vid, James and pitticuly the rather strange erosion on the cylinder head...such a corrosion can be the result of a earthing issue.( massa) of the engine. Cos a bad earth connection cause that the coolant starts to act as earth....with the result that alu heads, get eroded in the coolant channels.
Maybe an extra earth connection can't harm. ( ppl would be surprised, how poorly the earth connection are at cars!)

I would also flush the oil 1 or 2 times to make sure I have clean oil left in the engine and not some coolant+oil mixture. ;) And there's the radiator, coolant hoses, etc. At least that's what I would do, if I wanted to keep the car. Otherwise I would scrap it, 'cause head gasket failure and constant overheating is a pretty serious problem foe an engine.

Richard Mounfield I think they didn’t fit the internal boot release on early models, the 52 plate Cooper we used to have didn’t have one so I retro fitted one.

Just get the head welded and 're skimmed. If you get another head there's always a chance that could be cracked or could be warped and you might not know till you put it together. Just get that head repaired.

If you have ordered a second hand head what's to say that head is not cracked or warped , I personally would have had the head welded and re-surfaced.
before fitting the new head I would check it for flatness with a good straight edge and some feeler blades.

Defo get it into a machine shop, they will tig it skim it and pressure test it no problem. At least that way you know it will be good to go, and your not buying someone else's problems.

But you do have another issue, you should of matched the bright link (Timing Chain) to the mark on the cam wheel. But because you are changing the head, its going to throw out your timing!

I’d definitely change the head, even if it is ok short term I reckon it would turn catastrophic sooner than later wasting effort of repairing.

Hi mate , thanks for the vlog . Apologise if I missed it , how many miles on that engine to cause such corrosion on the engine block ?

Get them bulbs out of that side bin, or at least wrap um up otherwise you'll have broken bulbs in next to no time.

This is what happens when people just use neat water instead of proper antifreeze. It corrodes alot quicker and you get this. I would personally have it tig welded and skimmed. Better the devil you know. Great series. 👍

No way, just scrapped a mini cooper with a mint engine in. Tried to flog the engine but couldn't even get any takers at £50 so you should be able to get a cheap head.
