🛑 If you’re seeing this: This review contains a MAJOR spoiler (one for sure because once I heard it I stopped the video immediately 😒) I’ll come back Friday…
The last time I felt that way watching a movie, the "being in the presence of evil" feeling, was last year with When Evil Lurks, the Argentinian brutal film from Demian Rugna. Can't wait to have that feeling again.
Just out of curiosity, Christie, is there ever a time where you miss Roger Ebert because from time to time I do miss Roger and watching your reviews from time to time remind me of him
So sweet, thank you, yes I do often wonder what Roger would think of films. I also think of his approach to criticism: You're reacting to the film, but also reacting to your reaction.
I was so happy to see it in a PACKED theater! Let this be a sign that MARKETING MATTERS. Such a phenomenal movie too and one of the scariest films I’ve seen in quite some time.
I was so ready to love this movie. But walked away wishing it were as good as it could have been. The pacing was like: build up build up, nothing not high or low just a flat line. Then that is repeated to the end of the movie. It's like the dread and anticipation gets better and better but the results of all those moments don't do anything. Maybe I have to watch it again with different expectations.
Seriously I am really curious about this film because Oz Perkins has become quite the horror auteur in the last few years which is awesome to behold! Wish his father were still alive to see his accomplishments. Another brilliant artist that found his niche in horror.
If you liked The Blackcoats Daughter, or I am the pretty thing that lives in the house, Longlegs is better than those. I didn’t really care for any of them. But that doesn’t mean other people can not see value in them.
I think you should consider adding a spoiler warning to the title of the video, he spoiled the plot point of Lee realizing she had met Longlegs before when it’s revealed 2/3 of the way into the movie. It’s unfortunate I saw your review before I saw the film which for me took that reveal away
@@BreakfastAllDay Not necessarily, it could be led to believe it is just an introduction to the character or Kiernan Shipka’s character. Either way, seems a lot of people in the comments agree. Thanks for spoiling it for most of your viewers
I don't understand why they EVER delve into the plot, unless there is some crucial plot point that needs context. In this case, there was absolutely no need to give away a major plot point that isn't revealed for sure until later in the movie.
Seeing it Tomorrow! Definitely excited after all the buzz and reviews! I can already tell this is definitely one of the best horror/thrillers of the year. Possibly the best horror/thriller film of the year!
I liked this movie a whole lot. It'll likely be on my Best Movies of 2024 list! But one simple thing in this film could've made the movie even better. The opening credits essentially gave away one of the film's "mysteries" by giving you a fairly short list of the principal cast. While it wasn't a "whodunit" type of scenario in the realm of Agatha Christie, the Law of Economy of Characters gave away a rather major plot point in those credits, far earlier in the film than it needed to. Had the opening credits not given it away up front, the story would've had more dramatic tension to its reveal.
Finally saw this movie and wow. There is not one frame in this movie that is not thoughtful, that is boring. For me, this is a disturbing flawless horror movie. Great horror movies make you exquisitely angry at times and this one does. Great acting by everyone concerned.
I saw the much anticipated Longlegs last night. Maybe I made the mistake of watching "Pig" the previous night, which I thought was fantastic, Nicolas Cage was so great in that, I don't know how I missed seeing it when it came out. Longlegs turned out to be a big disappointment ! I didn't feel the evil, the moodiness was very good, I just think the movie kind of fell apart in part three. It tried to go in too many directions and ended up being incohesive. Nicholas Cage wasn't in it enough to be super scary, and he didn't actually do anything, it was all the mother! The black ball in the puppets head was a red herring, didn't go anywhere.
Right? What the fuck was up with that ball and why didn't they open it? That should have been the last shot in the film - the lead opening it and the forces of evil rushing toward us. Or something, anything. Lame film throughout though, more plot holes than Swiss cheese. Even to the point that the characters don't feel a bad smell from bodies that have been decomposing for a month. Puh-lease.
I am very curious about seeing this movie, the trailer got my interest and hearing other people say good things on it has raised my curiosity. thinking about going to a weekend showing. hearing your opinions on it, has me even more interested to go watch it.
I’m afraid of horror films having to do with paranormal or supernatural subjects. The Exorcist scarred me when I accidentally saw it on TV when I was a kid. I wanted to watch The Witch cause I am a cinephile and appreciate good filmmaking but someone said it had the devil in it so nahh. When Tim said it was evil I had to reconsider watching this. Will this be that kind of scary? I had nightmares from The Conjuring.
From what I've read (seeing it today), the supernatural elements are underplayed but also quite creepy if that makes sense. Think more "that doll's head just moved in the background" rather than Reagan crawling backwards up the stairs. However, again I haven't actually seen it, so I could be off the mark
I really didn’t like this. Didn’t do anything remotely unique or gripping for me and Nic Cage I found to be miscast. Was I supposed to be uncomfortable or on the verge of bursting into laughter every time he was onscreen?
i havent been this excited for a film for a while. missed the fan screening because it was sold out in toronto, but will be seeing it this weekend. sometimes i just overhype myself, particularly with horror movies, so hopefully it lives up to its reviews.

Doesn't surprise me there's alot of Clarice Sterling in this cause of Silence of the lambs film being made in the 90s. I'm defantly seeing it for the David Fincher feel cause I was a huge fan of his Mindhunter series which freaked me out.
This one fizzled towards the end for me… I think it’s because I prefer horrors that deal with the darkness of humanity more than ones that have so much supernatural stuff happening that the characters just feel like puppets… and the reveals in this movie’s third act, in my opinion, let the humans off the hook just a bit too much. See The Exorcist, Rosemary’s Baby, The Wicker Man and Midsommar for examples of the kind of resolutions which stick with me more.
Yeah, the moment clairvoyance is introduced as a plot point, or the occult for that matter, you know it's gonna be a let-down. Amaterur screenwriting here puts both to work. And even fails at that.
Hope you also review Willa Fitzgerald's Strange Darling. Don't know for sure, but trailer & marketing imply it's serial killer vs serial killer. "Nothing is what it seems."
I had been in two minds about seeing it, but I'm only hearing great things about it, so I think I'll pop off this morning!!! What was I thinking anyway, Nicolas Cage of course I was gonna see it!! Btw Christy I ran 5hours for my 50k ultra (32miles) the other day, first in my category... am enjoying my well earned DOMS!!😁💪🏃♀💪
I found the end reveal so unsatisfying. I can't dismiss the film entirely - there's a lot that is effectively unsettling - but when we learn what has been going on all along (the monologue undercuts the entire film for me) it felt like a massive cop out. A real let down, unfortunately.
I saw Nicolas Cage’s name in the trailer, but I did not hear his voice or see him. Where is the exaggerated Cage? 😂😂😂 Makkah Monroe is really doing outside the box roles/daring roles like this and God is a Bullet. Not being pigeonholed to any type of roles
I feel the same way. I thought for some reason I was in a pool of sun watching this movie. Even though I’ve seen way worse. There’s just something about this movie that is so unsettling.
Man, I feel the same as you guys but only for the first half of the film and then I thought the movie fell apart. The investigation itself isn't great after certain point halfway through the film. When compared to Seven or such films is just so not creative and uninteresting once the film commits to the type of film it is, which isn't in the realm of Silence of the Lambs. Also, the explanation at the end...
Are critics watching a different movie? This shit sucked...boring as hell and just as goody. Cage was good as always but hes in it for like ten minutes.
How does LONGLEGS compare to the first season of TRUE DETECTIVE? The film's trailer has an otherworldliness to it, of tribal folklore impeding on humanity's sprawling daily life, causing questions about the worth of our existence. Do black stars rise and cloud waves break as twin suns sink behind the lake? Vague, poetic generalities in your answers are welcome.
As another tall and lanky guy (I’m 6 feet 7 inches tall) I can relate to the title… BUT I am most definitely NOT a serial killer! Thankfully Id fundamentally be terrible at it! Hear that authorities!? Lol 😜
SPOILERS* Just saw this. Its silence of the lambs meets a fincher movie meets some sort of possession movie... except every one in the movie is a EFFING IDIOT and miserable and Maika, cannot even smile so its all just grim grim unfunny and more grimness ... She also lives in a weird cabin in the woods... and doesnt report a weird strange invasion to the house with a code break delivered during said home invasion, and she works for the FBI!!!! And then nicholas cage shows up and its a comedy. Hey we need to investigate your mum after the barn but no... just you go talk to her! Just you. BLAIR UNDERWOOD'S daughter in this movie, BEFORE getting the doll. This family HAS NO FRIENDS so she's home just celebrating her birthday with her parents. SO CONVIENIENT FOR THIS DUMB PLOT. And Maika is standing there and letting Blair go the kitchen to kill his wife? Because he literally makes a joke about them going to the kitchen so he can kill her.... And you can hear her comedic screams while being stabbed in the kitchen. Its a effing stupid comedy. God so frustrating, are we meant to be like "OMFG so scary?". This movie falls apart because of how stupid it is. And of course, the plot was going to end at their house because its a real case of Chekhov's birthday girl.
Its like their praising it as a good movie because the director catpured a dark/evil tone. The bar is so low now. 😂 That should be the standard. The director SHOULD be able to capture the tone
OK OK I PAUSED AT 0:07 IM SO IM SO HYPED FOR THIS 10/10 I REALLY WANNA HEAR MORE BUT ITLL RUIN A PERFECT ZERO PRE-KNOWLEDGE EXPERIEMCE DUNDOLIDATOK!!!!!!
I wanted to like this film so much more than I did! Maybe it was the overhyping, maybe I'm just over the satanic angle at this point, but this was a let down for me. Still a good film, and I enjoyed Cage as always. Just didn't connect with this on the level that others have seemed too. At any rate, I'm glad an original horror film like this is making money! Good for the genre and film at large.
@@BreakfastAllDay no I haven’t had the chance to see it yet. You mentioning that the main character met Longlegs when she was a child is a huge spoiler. I really didn’t appreciate that. Next time use a spoiler tag in your video title.
Christy, help me understand… I feel like I’m taking crazy pills. I found this movie utterly ridiculous. Nic Cage was at his Nic Cagiest, which I think was more distracting than anything. What bothered me most was that no part of Cages actions made any sense. Why send the letters? Why give Lee the key to solving the code? What was the significance of the dates? To make a pentagram? That was it? This movie dropped the ball on almost everything right down to the exposition dump at the end. Blecch.
I interpreted the point of the letters as his way to maneuver everyone into the conclusion of the movie. He needed everything to come full circle to fulfill a prophecy and die for Satan.
Spoilers. The second the two FBI pulled into the neighborhood at the beginning I knew Agent Redshirt was a dead man. This movie was extremely predictable, and worse: it actively gave its "secrets" away at each and every earliest opportunity which removed all suspense, or interest for that matter. The psychic schtick lasted approximately as long as the scenes it was introduced in, and was then almost completely ignored. The characters all seemed to be on the same quirkily half-speed overdramatic wavelength which made all the performances blend together. The exceptions were Detective Supervisor Man who was completely boilerplate until the end, and NicC who was as ridiculous as his costume. When they ultrasounded the doll brain Satan mcguffin was a real eye rolling moment too. I give it a 3.2/10 and a Hail Satan for the artsy cinematography and a couple of subtle, fleeting images. Save it for a cold and dreary night at home maybe? Or not.
I don’t think the psychic element was meant to be literal. It was mainly because of the trauma she suffered as a kid and growing up with longlegs in the basement. She had this feeling of truth in her unconscious, that’s why she knew something terrible was coming and the truth was in her hands.
The movie would have been MUCH better if the clairvoyance was actually Agent Lee recovering her lost memories. She seemed almost psychic because she had had been brainwashed while living with the killer since she was a child. Also. Even though the opening scene was the best scare in the entire film, it gave away FAR to much information. The rest of the movie was just confirming what I already had figured out.
Definitely did not live up to the hype. Loud at times, kind of weird, hard to follow at times. A depressing ending with lots of mental health problems between spoilers Nicholas Cages' character and Alicia Witts' character. I was expecting an engaging psychological thriller but that is not what i got.
Means better/more nuanced than a typical slasher film. But Longlegs ain't it. See Late Night with the Devil,, Hereditary, Immacculate, Midsommar or Abygail. Way better than this crap
Horrible film. Terrible lead actress, plot full of holes like Swiss cheese, mumbo jumbo about both clairvoyance and the occult, neither of which ever really pay off, and a tiny, tiny budget where not even a police station looks like what it's supposed to be (it looks like someone's private house). One of the worst I've seen in a while. The only good things about it are Cage (expectedly) and Blair Underwood, who deserves more roles on film. Save your money, see Abigail, Late Night with the Devil or Immaculate instead. Three actually good horror films.
I disagree with this war on exposition by critics. It's bad for cinema, because it encourages inept writing. Art movies today are slow and incoherent. The exposition you mentioned did nothing at all to diminish the viewing experience. That's what it should be about. Does the moment work or not? That's it. Otherwise, it's critiquing by some sort of point system, like a school teacher grading a paper. That's not how film criticism should be because movie viewing is more about instinct. If anything, that sequence of exposition was one of the few interesting moments in Longlegs. The movie is slow and pretentious. Also, if you're going to dismiss exposition, you'd have to dismiss pretty much all films from the classic era. Films like Casablanca, Vertigo, The Wizard of Oz, Citizen Kane, etc. all lean heavily on exposition. Those are bad movies??
I was fortunate enough to attend the premiere a few days ago at the Egyptian Theater and I was disappointed. In my opinion the movie did not live up to the hype. I thought it lacked atmosphere and I never felt "in the presence of evil," as your friend put it. I don't understand when people call it disturbing or terrifying. It's neither of those things. Horror movies today are soft popcorn nonsense. There's a few directors, like Eggers and Aster, doing good horror today. Perkins is not in that conversation. His main problem is he lacks the ability to write a solid and cohesive screenplay. That's been the issue with all of his work. Yes, he's a very visual filmmaker. His films always look incredible, BUT they also feel like incomplete scripts. I thought Maika was good, but Nic Cage was doing, well, Nic Cage shit. He was already a bit distracting with the prosthetics, but once he started with his shenanigans, he just took me out of the movie. And I wasn't the only one. I saw a lot of people giggling every time he popped up on screen. I didn't buy him as the satanic serial killer he's supposed to portray and that's that.
1:35 Ok?... I mean, thank you for spoiling us?... This was literally not mentioned anywhere in the marketing or in any of the plot synopsis. Oh well...
@@adumbcrush because spoiler-free reviews exist. And before a movie officially hits theaters, spoiler-free reviews made by people who got to see the movie early are the most prevalent type of review. As another tall and lanky guy (I’m 6 feet 7 inches tall) I can relate to the title… BUT I am most definitely NOT a serial killer! Thankfully Id fundamentally be terrible at it! Hear that authorities!? Lol 😜
I gotta be honest. I hated this movie nic cage acting is horrible and the ending was complete b.s.
LongLegs looks like Lisa Rinna. Scary af.
The only video I've watched out of dozens that tells how miaka's character has a connection to longlegs 🤦🏻♂️ smh
It is the very first scene in the movie, plus it's in the trailers. Thanks for watching, and we hope you enjoy the film.
Very first scene in the movie, but it’s not explicit that the kid is her until about an hour in. Poor form lol
@@calmcg6885 yeah now they've made it worse by telling me how the movie opens and exactly what that scene in the trailer is lmao
Its like their praising it as a good movie because the director catpured a dark/evil tone. The bar is so low now. 😂 That should be the standard. The director SHOULD be able to capture the tone
Another for my go see list.
So Monroe is an absolute genius but completely socially awkward. I feel like I’ve seen that before.
OK OK I PAUSED AT 0:07 IM
SO IM SO HYPED FOR THIS 10/10 I REALLY WANNA HEAR MORE BUT ITLL RUIN A PERFECT ZERO PRE-KNOWLEDGE EXPERIEMCE DUNDOLIDATOK!!!!!!
I'm excited about this. 😂
Maika Monroe looks like the late Britney Murphy. I’m seeing it on Monday.
This movie was so eerie and unsettling. That 1st scene is terrifying
Damn, they Guy on the Right is a Doppelganger of TH-cam-Cook Donald Skehan
I clicked on your video and you immediately started spoiling the movie for me. I will not be tuning into your channel ever again. Byeeee
Hi there, thanks so much for watching our review. Did you see the film yet?
Would have never guessed.5 ft
Please review Last Summer!
It was average at best
Or not.
The psychic ability was just there so they could be lazy with the writing for how she solves the case. :D I don't know why they even had it in there.
You guys must be fun at parties. Movie is great. Fuck off
I don’t think the psychic element was meant to be literal.
Other than the needless makeup on you know who, the movie was very thrilling. Never scary
It's intense, right?
A terrible movie! A Big let down!
Christy is only 5ft tall? That makes you even more cute! lol
What does elevated horror mean? Sorry I’m a horror casual lol
Slow & boring!!
Great visual style. Great acting. The plot is mid AF.
Sorry it didn’t work for you! How cool that you got to go to the premiere, though.
1:35 Ok?... I mean, thank you for spoiling us?... This was literally not mentioned anywhere in the marketing or in any of the plot synopsis. Oh well...
Right WTF??
@@eventvideostreaming let's just hope this is established early in the film and that this isn't too big of an information.
It is literally the first scene. Hope you enjoy!
@@BreakfastAllDaywhich scene it is LITERALLY doesn’t matter. It’s still a spoiler. Jfc…
@@adumbcrush because spoiler-free reviews exist. And before a movie officially hits theaters, spoiler-free reviews made by people who got to see the movie early are the most prevalent type of review. The vast majority of people who haven’t seen the movie yet want to watch the SPOILER-FREE reviews to know if the movie is good or not and other aspects of the movie without giving away important parts of the story.
