But they can always decide to go back, but first, they need to have more options rather than just holding sickles and selling farm products! They can, and we can, decide to leave behind current material life and go live in mountain generation by generation! But, it is selfish to let the fact of lack of education and opportunities force them into farmer and mountain people.
Wonderful glimpse into life of the Nan in this changing environment. Not much information about what the boys of the family do, do they also work in the fields? And is this a ‘matriarchy’ where the man still has to make the final decision?
Rajya Sabha Channel has a documentary on it , it is a cross learning for me as well. We do have "na' but language , dress and even matrilineal society 😅 is not the same. Thank you , slice !
The Na are also not matriarchal, they are matrilineal. In this documentary for example the uncle is the head of the clan. There are several matrilineal societies, however we currently have no anthropological evidence that matriarchal societies ever existed. That said, out of mankind's long history we only know of a fraction of a percent of all societies. It's not impossible for a matriarchal society to exist, we just don't know of any.
@@cosmicwisdom999 Because the Na are matrilineal, not matriarchal. Men are still the ones shouldering the responsibilities and making the decisions. The uncle is the head of this clan, for example.
I did remember reading an interview from a Mosuo woman on a website and she claimed that the men never do anything and it pisses the Mosuo women off to no end.
I wonder if the teacher would have challenged her in some way if she stated she's wanted to stay and work in the field instead of moving away fora teaching career... It really sounded like that teacher was pushing her belief systems on the class because she would have them repeat what the teacher felt was a good decision to make rather than staying in the mountains and living out their lives. I find it very sad when teachers push their narrative on their class. They're in a state of authority over those children and children are extremely impressionable. In matters such as this, it's best that these children make their decisions when they're older when their brains are more fully developed and can comprehend their consequences of their decisions better.
He and his wife escaped the village through education, they are upset seeing their nieces being told to quit school to feed pigs. I'm sure they will get free labor for their restaurant too.
Teachers should how to better your community not to abandon it,kids can take better way of doing things parents would listen they are also worried about their kids and community future.
Sure, modern life can be chaotic, but traditional ways of living are still very tough. There's probably a balance where tradition and modernity can work together 🤔
If this is a matriarchal society, why should the men decide whether or not if the girls should go to school? It's matriarchal because the women do the majority of the work, so matriarchal only when needed...
The Na are matrilineal, not matriarchal. This is just a mistake in the documentary. The uncle is the head of the clan so he has the responsibility to make the choice. The women aren't doing the majority of the work, they are doing the majority of housework at their home and fieldwork for the pigs. In this case the confusion arises because the men don't live with the women. There's tons of shots in the documentary of men working, and obviously they are maintaining their own households too. It's probably worth noting that we have yet to discover a matriarchal society. We have some evidence, sure, but no certainty. As far as we know probably all societies are matriarchal, so when you hear that claim you should be sceptical. We also don't have evidence of any society where women do the majority of work. Typically women are protected and either do light labour like fieldwork or housework. This is taken to the extreme in some societies where women do close to zero labour of any kind. For example in the west it's common for housewives to do just a few hours of cleaning and cooking per day. We don't know of any societies where men stay at home while women work, although it would be an interesting discovery for sure!
Such wonder ful content. Could you please switch back to subtitles instead of dubbing it? Hearing the language is so important and adds so much.
Some people like to listen to these documentaries instead of watching them so they do it for them
Seeing impaired individuals are unable follow along in that case. It would be nice if they offered both options.
Hurt me listening the teacher saying to kids that need leave the mountains
Yes I agree. More people need to turn back to the mountains and nature. Civilization is destroying the Earth!
But they can always decide to go back, but first, they need to have more options rather than just holding sickles and selling farm products! They can, and we can, decide to leave behind current material life and go live in mountain generation by generation! But, it is selfish to let the fact of lack of education and opportunities force them into farmer and mountain people.
It's so nice to know that some indigenous traditions still exist...
What a beautiful place.
I wish I could live a simple life like those who live on the mountain. They should beb careful what they wish for.
What beautiful people ..there way of life makes sense. Better for women
Except for the nocturnal forest spirits this place seems like a nice place
Does anyone have information on the dried pig that has been preserved for years??
thank you Slice for not making me read subtitles

This is from 2014. I wonder how things have changed for them now.

The commercials are exhausting. I dont want to watch a channel that forces a ton of commercials down my throat
The Na people aren't the only matriarchal society in the world. There are quite a few, just to be clear.

It's easy to wish you were living in an authentic village when you are living with urban comforts.

I don’t know, that uncle is up to something sinister
Is it because he's being way too nice with the girls?
