This morning I've been listening to the 2014 remaster on vinyl. I can't see a single reason why the album needed to to be "redone" again. I'm with you in my belief that the 2014 or the 2000 remasters are excellent. The two versions each present excellent sound while maintaining the integrity of the original release. The attacks on our friend and his wife are completely unfounded and as I stated in my video they deserve much much more respect than some people have afforded them. In the liner notes of the 30th anniversary re-mix - George states that he would like to hear a version without the reverb. Hence - Dhani tried to accomplish this. It doesn’t mean he made a better version but he tried his best. If George was around - maybe he wouldn’t have approved - since he isn’t we have to go by Dhani’s ears and he obviously feels this is something that meets his dads goal. Dhani said in Apple Scruffs they didn’t remove the reverb because it sounded like a demo without it.
@@justinpenn9250 The problem is, I guess, that I don't listen with Dhani's ears. Whatever he may have thought he was doing the end result was a mix I'll likely never listen to again.

I understand that there may have been serious limitations to what could have been done with a remix as much of the reverb was a part of the recording process, so was baked in. However, I don't think this remix would have satisfied George's desire for more clarity and in that sense I think it's an opportunity lost. Enjoyed your video John. I have all the different copies from over the years including this new 50th. I enjoy them all and continue to be grateful for the releases after all these years. Its one of my pleasures awaiting new releases. Take care and enjoy the music.
Thanks. I received my 3CD version of ATMP yesterday. It seemed like the best value for checking out the 50th anniversary version. The only other version I own is a US Capitol pressing of the original LPs, so I may keep the 8 LP 50th on my wishlist, hope all the pressing bugs get worked out, and wait for a price drop. It is a shame that they didn't consider including musician credits for individual tracks. The booklet for the 3 CD set is pretty vacuous.
I could never get into the original mix of ATMP. So for me the new mix is a brand new introduction to the album. I've been a fan since 1983 and only cares about the hits on ATMP. Now I love the entire listening experience with a clearer more open remix!!
Hi John. Thanks again for your commentaries on all things 'Beatles related'. With all that has being going on over the last year or so, we all need a distraction by anything Beatles. That is in essence is what George, Paul, John & Ringo lived by. .... Honesty, peace & understanding....... GAZ (Melbourne/Australia)
Paul Hicks should never be allowed near a mixing console. Either he has poor hearing or bad judgement in suckling the life out of the masterpiece All Things Must Pass.
I received my 3 album copy this week. I really have no complaints. I can enjoy my older copy and this one. I think for the price, which gets mentioned a lot and for good reason, they could've added a soft copy of the book. I do find it interesting that after 50 years this album is being discussed as much as it is.
Maybe the record label should be called 'Flogging a dead horse'! - Tampering with dead artists work is wrong. I wonder what George himself would think? Excellent review as always John - clearly mistakes were made.
Isn’t it a pity isn’t it a shame a beatiful lyric I do love his music but not remixes you carnt beat the originals thanks John I agree with you remixes kill the soul of the music I have heard the entire songs and then the originals and I’m sticking to my great memories 🙏
I have this set on vinyl. I definitely prefer vinyl vs digital examples. Speaking for me, I find that vinyl much more dynamic than digital. Your mileage might vary, of course. But my ears like the LPs much more.
Here's the weird thing: Sides 1-4 of ATMP can fit on 1 CD. So Why not put all that, the main album songs, on CD1, and have Apple Jam separate by itself on CD2? Then it's the same amount of CDs but it just makes more sense and the inner sleeves are actually accurate. Then CD3 of outtakes stays the same!
I kinda look at the whole first four sides of the album as very spiritual conceptually, and with the Apple Jams it’s just pure rocking out without words. Almost symbolic of dissolving completely into the what he was singing about. Is that what they had in mind. I doubt it. But I enjoy the Apple Jam so much more with that perspective. But I also 100% respect the opinion that the Apple Jams are bonus tracks
Ill do some more a to b listening. I am comparing this new version which I did download from Qobuz to the 2014 version. We all need to respect each other’s opinions and not bitch at each other though. Peace and love xx
For what it's worth, I find that listening to streaming files of the 50th is the best experience for this new release. Strangely enough. It reminds me that Bobby W. received digital files pre-release and he said those sounded good. I don't know why streaming the 50th would sound better than my 3-CD set, but to my ears it does.
A year on, and I think the new remix is FAR superior to the original. Its hardly even a fair fight. But its good to have both so no need to replace. I wish I had kept my 1987 Beatles CDs!!
Referencing 10:08 it is a testament to people's passion for music and for ALL the musicians that participated in the original recording that it can STILL generate controversy 50 years down the line, because it was controversial at the time, for the religious nature and also because it was the first major release of a fully produced (as opposed to self produced) album from a Beatle. This is cool! It's not a bad thing at all to be arguing about music, my friends and I do it all the time. I think it is a different era, tech has changed so a new version will come out as long as people are interested. It's all good!
I have the 3 CD 50th release. (I have the original My Sweet Lord/Isn’t It A Pity single) The clarity of instruments are nice. Good full sound. It’s a change from the original 71 release. This builds on the 2000 Harrison remix.
Regarding George’s vocals have to remember that when we’re listening to demos and run-throughs sometimes it takes a number of takes to get the vocal up to where it supposed to be, and that’s why the vocal might not of been used for the final take. I sometimes have a hard time distinguishing between Clapton and George because I think they hung around so much that George became a better guitar player and adapted some of Clapton‘s techniques?
I bought the 3 LP set with mostly credit card points and $11 USD cash. I like the sound, though it could have used a tweak here and there. With such a release, it's impossible to please everybody. Then I downloaded the full 5 CD set from one of those websites. The cost of recording this album has already been amortized long ago. You're paying for the cost of remixing and manufacturing the album. The prices being charged are an outrage. We criticize Yoko Ono, but I have to tell you, Olivia and Dhani have surpassed her. The price of a non essential good such as a record is based - besides the cost of production - on PERCEIVED VALUE. I'm very sure if PETE BEST or RINGO STARR tried to pull off such a stunt, there would be boxcars and warehouses bursting with unsold product. If I hadn't had those credit card points to pay for most of the album, I wouldn't have bought it at all. BTW - The next GH Estate release, I can bet you will be the MONO VINYL OF WONDERWALL MUSIC. But we'll have to wait another 10 years at least. It will surely be a box set as well. The only people I know that have bought that UBER $999- box set are You Tubers who post videos on Beatles material.
The Uber concept and price has to be a Monty Python joke. It's a bit humorous to see that those who blew a grand on it are the most staunch defenders of the remixes. Fancy that. I can understand if the purchaser leaves it untouched and puts it on Discogs ten years from now as 'still sealed' for $1500, but who in their right mind would go for it?
@@continentalgin Blame Gene Simmons for this. He sold a $2000 "Vault" containing 50 years (166 songs over 11 CDs) of rejected tracks and demos from 1966 to 2016. There were other consolation trinkets and you got to meet him in person has he handed you the Vault and signed anything you brought in. I think it was a rip off, but when you take into account The George Harrison's Estate "Uber" package, that one takes the Grand Prize for Chutzpah.
@@manolokonosko2868 Wow, I didn't know about that Gene Simmons thing. But even if the remixes were any good, a grand for the Uber is still a Monty Python joke price, although a lot of people fell for it.
I think Wah-Wah take 1 is pretty much what it would sound like without wall of sound, minus the finished vocals and horns. You're right, the blu-ray doesn't make much sense as an investment if you don't have the equipment for surround. That begin said, unless my memory is playing tricks on me, the recent Lennon sets started at the same price point. I think the remix has come in for some excessive, unfair criticism. But to illustrate how subjectively we all hear music, I would never have thought to mention the bass drum on Isn't it a Pity 1, whereas it might be a crucial moment for someone else, so mileage will clearly vary depending on what favorite moments and sounds. Overall, the remix may not replace the original for me in the longer term but I am enjoying it on its own merits.
The remix sounds fantastic Have never been a fan of Spectors Wall of Sound when in Stereo. His early 60’s Mono work was revolutionary But this new Remix is fresh and alive
Totally agree, John! Their JAMS, not songs. Try and sell em on separate cds. 😆 they'll end up in the cutout bins, but they are better then anything on Zapple. Lol 😅As far as the Blooper box set. $1000.00? I'd rather spend it on George's solo sets as a whole, or The Beatles collective works! You don't even get the original lps (mix) in the set. Nice review, John. 😉 No way George puts that price tag on it. No way. 😔
This is Stirling work Mr Heaton, you're a gentleman and a youtube legend. Id be interested to hear what Dhani thinks of the reaction. If he has five minutes id like to know where Early Takes Volume 2 is... Can someone with the new All Things vinyl let me know if it's on the orange apple? My copy is still shrinkwrapped and will stay that way while I hammer the 2001 cd and the 2021 out takes discs. Have a good weekend. 👍
My favorite version of ATMP is still my original LP copy. I wasn't going to buy the deluxe set because of the cost, but managed to grab the HiRes downloads for half the price of the CDs. The best thing about the new set is the demos and outtakes, I like some of the remixes on the album, but there are some mix choices that really bug me. As you said, some instruments are buried, and then things like a tambourine or acoustic rhythm guitar are boosted and it sounds weird. Where is the harmonica on "If Not for You?"
I think that this has finally decided me not to bother. I am more than happy with the 30th anniversary edition, and having heard the Isn't It a Pity John refers to once, I have no need to hear it again.
Hello John, Do you plan to make one day a review of "Run Devil Run" and "Driving Rain" to complete your McCartney reviews ? Thanks for your videos, much appreciated.
Thanks for the review John. I found it enticing. George' Harrison and the carious critics, both professional and many who think they are professional, have had all this time to reflect on the original release, and all the subsequent remasters, and or remix's for decades now. What we have, the 1970 release, should be what we get. The Wall of Sound complaints are what they are. To me, a prime example of just being blasted out of the room with WOS is the Leonard Cohen "Death Of A Ladies Man" album. Which to me can feel quite overpowering at times. But, I digress... Depending on my mood the WOS for ATMP can get a little annoying and bombastic, especially if I am playing it loud. However, I am someone who enjoys 30th anniversary remaster. Who knows??? Maybe there should be a "All Things Must Pass...Stripped Naked" one day.
There's no way to get rid of the Wall of Sound on this album, even if that were desirable, because it partly comes from the way the songs were recorded- a large ensemble of people playing in a room, including people duplicating parts.
This was a money grab by Universal and blessed by the Harrison estate. Bread and circuses. Give them some stickers and some toy figurines and a poorly researched book... a sad state of affairs.
Excellent, succinct review. I'm a CD guy. Bought the 3CD version because the 5 CD set was outrageously priced. And I happen to love it. Except for the little booklet. Kind of useless. The original release I found was always a little tough to listen to because of the Spector sound. The 30th anniversary (colorized) version was a huge improvement sonically. Never heard that 2014 remaster you discussed but this latest remix sounds marvelous. No complaints.
The full 2 lp version of ATMP can fit onto one of the cd's so they should have had the album on one cd and the apple jam all alone on the second disc. Would have been a better listening experience.
Could definitely do without the Apple Jam. For me the album ends with hear me lord. And the new 2021 mix was probably done because A) the 50th anniversary of course. B) George did actually want to remix the whole thing but for one reason or another didn't. I love the new voices and bass on Art Of Dying but George's swirling electric guitar isn't out enough, it's been hidden a bit. It's mostly hit and a few misses with this 2021 mix. But what the 2021 can't compete with is the smoothness of the musical mix with the 1970 mix
The reissue of all things must pass..the first release is the best..this extra cut release is a little too late for the people who bought this in 70 or 71 like I did...the cd release was ok ...but the original is the one to own..most folks who have reviewed the 50th release....pricey.... Muddy and no new revelations..
Thanks for your review. I'm a bit more positive about it than you - but, as you say, we are all entitled to our own opinions! A couple of specific comments. I've never enjoyed Wah Wah despite it often being listed among people's favourite tracks. In contrast, I find the Apple Jam to be a bit of fun and well worth a listen - which is again contrary to most people's views. I wonder if George would have been happy with this 50th anniversary edition. I suspect he may have liked how his vocals are brought forward in the mix.
The apple jam is great as much as it is a historical document. Alan Lomax (The famed musicologist), had he lived to this time might have been pleased as I do.
Another great a very honest video John & for me personally i don't like this new remix at all & certain merits yes but on the whole it isn't a patch on the 30th anniversary remaster.... In my own opinion his most famous song My Sweet Lord suffers the most as it sounds like it was recorded down a drain & is just so flat presented here & as for George's vocals they warble all over the place! Some of the outtakes are very nice but as for value for money this is a terrible buy! I'm just hoping the Beatles Let It Be/Get Back forthcoming package is much much better!!!!
I was disappointed with the quality control of dish warps on 3 out of 8 vinyl lps plus the high end detail is veiled covered with boomy bass and muffled muddy audio. It's the worst sounding ATMP ever released. I'm sticking with my original German vinyl and the 2017 remaster and saving myself $250.
Listen to the usa 2nd press I found sounds muddy muffled the very 1st press sounds alot crisp and better tone first press has made in the usa circle on the inside cover
Want to say, I don't have the 50th edition. I have it twice already, no need to buy it again. I was listening to "Living In The Material World" the other day and think the songs on it are just as good as "ATMP." Let's just say that "Living In The Material World" came out first and it had the "ATMP" production (with Spector producing) and "ATMP" came out second and had the "Living In The Material World" production (with Harrison producing). Would we be talking about "Living In The Material World" as the big album with all the remixes and "ATMP" as a really good album?
I have the 2001 2014 and I’ve heard enough of the 2021 remix to say the 2014 CD release is my favorite. The sound is clearer than the 30th with better clarity. It is not as ear piercingly loud as the new remix and also maintains the original mix. The 2014 CD release is my favorite digital version of this album. There was a 2010 HD digital download version that is supposed to the best sounding release of this album but it is no longer available, it is sort of the holy grail for this album. Too bad.
@@allthingsclassicrock thank you, I appreciate your comments. I will go for the 2014 edition, and will also purchase the 2021 release for the bonus material.
Overall, yeah it was a bit of a miss. The drums sound great, I will admit, and thankfully a bit of unnecessary echo was reduced. Run of the Mill and My Sweet Lord sounds really great remixed, and I did like some of the outtakes (especially the Hear Me Lord you’ve mentioned). But George’s voice being up in the mix was a bit unsettling to me. It felt like he was too loud to the point it felt like he was narrating and not singing as part of the song
Unfortunately the songs that suffered the most from Spector's bombastic ruination still sound bad ( Wah Wah, Let It Down, Awaiting on You All and the dreadful horns on the Title track ). Guess some of his nonsense was un-removable. The out takes and basic tracks are fantastic, however. The Day 1 tracks are particularly wonderful, with just Ringo and Klaus . Thanks for another great video, John.
Few have addressed the question 'Who was this fiftieth anniversary remix made for?' My answer is 'Anyone under forty who does not venerate Phil Spector and could not appreciate the impact that this album had on it's first release'. I was too when it was first released and the sophistication of the song writing and performances made the audience for the album self selecting. John Heaton used Spotify sensibly. The Spotify/download generation are part of why the remix was done. As for the un-named disgruntled person who played on the album, he wrote who played in what track in his memoir 'A Rock and Roll Autobiography' and could have quoted from his own book, but chose not to. Finally George was started out as 'an expensive artist'. He released two triple albums as his proper albums. Hs grand projects required good hi-fi for the way he recorded to be fully felt. There were complaints back then and the complaints are the same now.
Talking just about the Remix. To me it is great. A lot of details suddenly can be heard. I have the original LP's, the first CD release, the 2001 release and listened to the first Remix now on Spotify. I think they did a great job on this difficult recording and I enjoy the Remix a lot. I think I will never play the old releases any more having this here now. Same to me is with the Lennon remixes. Far superior. I see some points in some criticism, but the bashing to me is not understandable. This here I think is the hardest job on any Beatles or Solo Beatles stuff yet to Remix. Thumbs up from me to the Remix. I enjoy it more and more with every listen and I am glad that All things must pass is listenable completely now for the first time.
All things must pass finally listen-able? Bit of hyperbole there, eh? The album isn’t the best recording in the world but the original mix is fine. Glad you enjoy the new remix I’ll be sticking with the wall-o-sound that gave the album its identity. Different strokes for different folks...
@@allthingsclassicrock what I mean is that it is listenable completely to me. I hated Wah Wah since I heard the Concert for Bangla Desh version. Art of Dying is a mess of overblown sound. Apple Scruffs too sharp, others sound so overproduced. I love how suddenly so many details appears strings, horns and backing vocals. It does the high quality of the musicians better justice. Sorry, but this is how I feel about it. I hope all other Solo records will get the same justice. And I love his thin but so great pronounced vocals. So unique.
@@ewndr7940 I was kind of taking the piss when I wrote that comment, I get where you’re coming from. I first heard this album in the 90s before it was remastered and it sounded fine. Have to say, I think the lyrics to Wah Wah are nonsense from start to finish.

I could never get into the original mix of ATMP. So for me the new mix is a brand new introduction to the album. I've been a fan since 1983 and only cares about the hits on ATMP. Now I love the entire listening experience with a clearer more open remix!!
pfffft!
I agree I love the new mix.
HI JOHN, THANKS FOR SHARING. THE 2001 30TH ANNIVERSARY VERSION IS A REMASTER NOT A REMIX
Great review John, good points.
Good thing no one mentioned Bobby Whitlock in any of your comments. It seems that the powers that be are having those removed from TH-cam....
Good review!
I got the cd's and they sound fresh and new and I love it. Also love the out takes.
Nice balanced review, John. I asked our local library to buy the 5-CD set, and I'll look forward to getting it that way. Thanks very much.
I received my 3 album copy this week. I really have no complaints. I can enjoy my older copy and this one. I think for the price, which gets mentioned a lot and for good reason, they could've added a soft copy of the book. I do find it interesting that after 50 years this album is being discussed as much as it is.
I have the 2000 2001 version that George worked on it sounds great to my ears.
Fair assessment, I agree with your comments!
I bought the 3 cd version also and purchased the basis 3 record LP. The rest I picked up on Apple music.
Spot on with every point
Referencing 10:08 it is a testament to people's passion for music and for ALL the musicians that participated in the original recording that it can STILL generate controversy 50 years down the line, because it was controversial at the time, for the religious nature and also because it was the first major release of a fully produced (as opposed to self produced) album from a Beatle. This is cool! It's not a bad thing at all to be arguing about music, my friends and I do it all the time.
I think it is a different era, tech has changed so a new version will come out as long as people are interested. It's all good!
The new mix is much clearer. It’s a thumbs up from me and there’s always the original to refer back and the 2001 remaster.
I have the 3 CD 50th release. (I have the original My Sweet Lord/Isn’t It A Pity single) The clarity of instruments are nice. Good full sound. It’s a change from the original 71 release. This builds on the 2000 Harrison remix.
2000 was just a remaster. A very bright, loud remaster.
Regarding George’s vocals have to remember that when we’re listening to demos and run-throughs sometimes it takes a number of takes to get the vocal up to where it supposed to be, and that’s why the vocal might not of been used for the final take. I sometimes have a hard time distinguishing between Clapton and George because I think they hung around so much that George became a better guitar player and adapted some of Clapton‘s techniques?
very well said!
You do get a high res stereo mix which will sound even better than the CDs. So that is one thing the Blu-ray has in its favor.
I agree about the research.no excuse
The remix sounds fantastic
Have never been a fan of Spectors Wall of Sound when in Stereo.
His early 60’s Mono work was revolutionary
But this new Remix is fresh and alive
Listen in high res. It's incredible
reissues in my opinion is a device to make money for record compnies and i feel one should be satisfied with the original release
You're correct in some cases but you aren't right as a blanket statement for all
@@craigwarner6156 opinion from a person who is poor
Have you noticed that the lyrics poster is missing the verse about the Pope on Awaiting on you all. Failed the proof read lol!
If I'm not mistaken my original did not have the lyrics about the pope. I hand wrote it in.
I have the original poster; no Pope verse. George must have slipped it in as a sly joke.
Hello John,
Do you plan to make one day a review of "Run Devil Run" and "Driving Rain" to complete your McCartney reviews ?
I’ve been looking at the Amazon reviews. They say too expensive and not as good as earlier issues
Flogging a Dark Horse.
Like you i bought the 3 cd set. The pricing difference was rediculous. How they come up with that is beyond me. But i like the remix.
I will not purchase this "money grab". I have the original and that is all I need.
Yeah I enjoy the 30th anniversary George oversaw. That’s my go to. That was the last one he had his hands in. That’s good enough for me
Finally got box set....
The Jams are the great.
Got original chunky box and.30th.and apple years.version.now got 2cd remix..that's enough .thanks for your honest words....
Knock.
The Apple Jam... as far as I'm concerned, is some of the earliest mainstream Prog rock... "Out of the Blue" sounds like Pink Floyd before Pink Floyd.
Love this thought. Out of the Blue is on overlooked gem!
open up your pocket book and buy the 8lp. divide the cost into the 8 records and it i $22,50 a disc
Yeah, what they've done with the Apple Jam jars...
It confused me yesterday.
👍
The Final Verdict (For The Moment)
I meant basic LP. Still have not decided what I like best. I prefer the colored 2001 release on CD.
Would we be talking about "Living In The Material World" as the big album with all the remixes and "ATMP" as a really good album?
was listening to Material World yesterday….so underrated compared to AtMP!
Hi John, what record stores or markets can you suggest in Budapest?
1:56 I have this. I bought it in 2000 also. It's one of my most prized possessions along with my Led Zeppelin DVD.
John, how you rate the All Things Must Pass edition from 2014 (Apple Years boxset) in relation to the editions from 2001 and 2021 ? CD editions only
I have the 2001 2014 and I’ve heard enough of the 2021 remix to say the 2014 CD release is my favorite.
@Grammy Award winning engineer Paul Hicks.Really?
I generally like the idea of hearing Instruments and parts with greater detail/separation/etc. but it just didn’t work for me in this release. Glad you’re enjoying it though. I am a little torn, I like the outtakes a lot but I don’t know if I like them enough to buy a physical copy.
Hi John. Your mic doesn’t seem to be working properly.
I always have to turn his channel up. Maybe he needs Paul Hicks to do a re-mix.
I first heard this album in the 90s before it was remastered and it sounded fine. Have to say, I think the lyrics to Wah Wah are nonsense from start to finish.
