  • Hunters around the nation report seeing and harvesting fewer turkeys over the last few years. Grant explains what has possibly caused the wild turkey populations to decline along with actions to take to reverse the trend.
The GrowingDeerTV team have been avid turkey hunter for many years. We’ve experienced years with lots of turkeys and other season with not as many. However, we’ve never experienced a decline in turkey populations on such a large scale as it occurring now. It’s not just our observations that concern me. Several state agencies have noticed a decline in turkey populations and are wisely changing the seasons and bag limits. South Carolina, Alabama and other states are making changes to turkey season dates, bag limits, and even when decoys can be used.
Hunters need to take these changes to turkey populations seriously! There’s not a lot of time to waste so please become involved now. A good place to start is to become a member of the National Wild Turkey Federation and visit with the state wildlife agency where you hunt.

Alot of people forget farmers killed every owl and hawk they seen back in the day and we had small game everyplace now for some reason owls and hawks are put on a pedestal instead of shoved face down a groundhog hole like they use be

The decline of fur prices has had an impact on turkey egg survival.

It's really getting hard to find them on public land.need to stop the killing of Jake's, and lower the allowed turkey kill, most importantly is to hunt the predators more .

Another item that’s hurting them is technology. The quality of calls, decoys, and training videos takes a lot of skill out of it so the success rates are improving, but most places are still using old school game regulations. Their is a huge gap and need to update game regulations at the same rate of technology to make it far for the game animals.

Out west, our turkey numbers are fantastic. The problem, is that their biological clock was off this year and April gobblers were acting like February Gobblers. by the late season, they were finally henned up; and after the season closed, they finally started acting like late March turkeys.

My grandad said that Indiana has become the worst state to turkey hunt but people in Arkansas say the same thing my first season in the first week of both states I killed one and had a buddy shoot one with a bow and this was all public land in opening day in Arkansas 2020 I shot a 22lb 9.5” beard 1” spur gobbler and in Indiana my buddy shot a nice gobbler with a bow in Indiana opening day and opening weekend 2021 I shot an 11” beard 1.5” spur 21lb turkey both those birds I set down for less than 20 min the one in Arkansas I shot in 8 min struck him up sat down at 6:54pm shot him at 7:02pm at 7 steps and the one I shot in Indiana I sat down at 6:40am and shot him at 6:57am at 22 steps idk if it’s pure luck or what but I feel like people just play echo and say that there’s no birds after one hunt session and don’t go out again like my grandad hunted once last season and told me there was no birds and if I hunted that same spot I would have said the same thing because I went there after I got my bird with a buddy sat for 3 hours and heard nothing so I’d agree but I’d say that people just play echo and don’t hunt because they go out and don’t hear a bird after 10 min and leave and just go “there’s not a bird in (Insert state)” people just don’t want to put in work people getting lazy that’s like the wader discussion like why does one person buy the same waders as someone and they last 5 seasons but someone buys the same pair and it lasts them half a season like mine did and they go well I went hunting killed a 3 man limit well bucko I didn’t kill anything because you come flying by here right at shooting light trying to take my spot then go set up 100 yards away then hail call at every black bird out there so we leave and you kill them all cause we scouted and you didn’t put In the effort and work to find the birds but you come plowing in at shooting time cause you were late then set up and kick us out with the obnoxious behavior little salty about that but your waders last forever cause you never get out of the boat and put In work or you pay someone $5500 to shoot 24 ducks at an outfitter because let’s get with it they don’t want to stay and shoot their bonus ducks they just want green and they don’t want to put in work they just want to pay and play that’s why y’all chilling in 35k boats with your 85k trucks with space heaters and $1500 guns with $150 choke tubes shooting countless amounts of tss sky busting at ducks 100 yards up in the air and no it’s not the older generation it’s the new generation that weren’t raised right by their parents that were given everything in life to get them out of their hair and just like the expensive stuff to “flex” on everyone else and I get it I’m a young hunter myself but I pick up my shells and I don’t leave trash and I decoy my birds properly I go scout I put in the work and I don’t ever disrespect another hunter because they didn’t shoot their limit or any at all because I’m not stuck up and have money to blow because I work for mine I’ve earned every last dime and penny to pay for my equipment I don’t get birthday money or Christmas money or just because money I get thanks for putting in your time at work money this young generation need to learn what it takes to work 12 hour shifts daily and sometimes you don’t get weekends off and your working 12 hour shifts 20 days in a row but guess what we are happy to do it cause we feel accomplished at the fact we can pay our bills yes we have nice things but we’ve earned it through hard work people quit paying for your kids everything make them work when they turn 15 and can get that note from school they will appreciate it instead of being mad when you won’t buy them a new shotgun or rifle every year because it’s the best or that new truck because it’s the newest best thing stop it all falls back to how these new generation hunters hunt they steal spots don’t put in work and then go well I didn’t kill any so pay for me to shoot some it kills the industry and no one wants to teach these kids to do it anymore no one wants to teach them to decoy birds or call that turkey or put in work to kill a deer they just want to throw money at the problem and say make it work nah that’s not how you do it people rant over

Grant, I'm not sure how many times I have messaged you over the last 11 years of viewing but I would do anything to have you as a guest on my property in Northwest Arkansas. Even a quick drive around the mountain for some input would be worth years of my own trial and error. Thank you for continuing to be such an amazing role model for all of us!

One of the best episodes I’ve watched over the years. I think everyone should watch this to learn the importance proper land management. Trapping is a powerful conservation tool promoting biodiversity on lands.

In my area, some of our problem is bald eagles. We have had a huge rise in bald eagles lately; and we've noticed less Turkey population with the more bald eagles. My dad had a story where he works for UPS . He was out and there were five or six turkeys alongside a barn. He asked the guy why are they all hugging the wall. He said look up in that tree. There was a bald eagle up in the tree. Turkeys would not move until the eagle was gone. A lot of the reason that we are having such low numbers where I live is cuz of eagles.

Thank you Grant for speaking up about this alarming trend. I sometimes feel that the everyday common hunter voice is dismissed when we see these things happening so when I see you step up and speak out that gives me great encouragement. I hope this prompts at least our state to urgent action. As hunters I hope we can ban together and help the turkeys out again. Much respect Grant 👍

My guy, the worst thing that ever happened to pheasant and turkey numbers was the $8/bushel corn prices of 2008-2010. Farmers and land owners decimated all the set aside land in order to plant as many corn seeds as possible
