  • Visiting Corkscrew Swamp, a hidden pristine gem, gives us a unique glimpse into how Southern Florida's natural landscape, with it's rugged beauty , flora and fauna, looked when the Seminole Indians roamed through the swamps in the early nineteenth century.
The trail follows a two mile long boardwalk winding though various types of Ecosystems : Pine Flatwood, Cypress Swamps, Wet Prairies and a Marsh.
In 1912 local folks became alarmed at the rate at which the natural beauty of southern Florida was being destroyed by loggers and other destructive developments.
They raised $200,000 and bought the swamp saving it from mans abuse of nature.
They employed wardens to protect the wild life, in particular Egrets and other birds from being killed for their feathers by plume hunters.
The feathers were used to adorn ladies hats, a fickle fashion statement.
We owe those folks of 1912 a big debt of gratitude, for their forward thinking conservation action, and their dedication to nature in general and Southern Florida nature in particular,
