The BBC has a lot to learn from its past achievements; these radio plays were made so well. and were a joy to many. Thank you for this upload - as well as so many other great plays. 👍

That's because a lot of writers/actors had done national service and mixed with persons of different backgrounds and cultures. Now they come from a select bunch of university sheep minds.

A damned fine play; exciting story, very well acted, and the sound effects were terrific. Brilliantly clear diction - such an enormous pity that so many actors these days feel the need to mumble and bumble their way through their scripts. I enjoyed this enormously. Thank you.

Terrific production values, with absolutely perfect sound effects. The old radio dramas in the 1950s and 1960s were carefully handcrafted artwork. The characterizations of the two captains were quite different from the film with Robert Mitchum and Curt Jurgens: the movie captains were doing dirty but necessary jobs, whereas the radio captains were almost gleeful about playing a game of chess or cat-and-mouse with each other. If I didn't know that Leo Genn played Commander Murrell, captain of the H.M.S. Hecate, I'd have sworn it was Ronald Coleman, except he'd been dead for 5 years when this was broadcast. I didn't care much for the Germans: it sounded like they cast the Pythons as the Germans, with John Cleese playing Peter Lorre playing John Cleese as the U-boat captain von Stolberg, or perhaps Peter Sellers doing Justin Eidelberger from the Goon Show.

Middle of a battle and you can still get a bollocking, "Stand to attention when you speak to your Commanding Officer". Brilliant !! Captain Stolberg sounds like Peter Sellers doing his Major Bloodnok voice from "The Goon Show". Not only that he also sounds at times like Valentine Dayll, (well they do have an "Appointment With Fear" in this battle). Perhaps its his Master Plan, he wants to confuse his crew as well as the enemy. Love these old radio drama's.

Excellent listen. Very much of its time, but doesn't detract from the drama. The accents made me smile, a whole lot of "Himmel!" "Mein Gott!" & so on!
To contradict what one person replied, this play is of interest to both "boys AND girls" and would recommend. (And who so referred this all-out as a "dog fight", which is an aerial term, not naval.)
Would suggest that "The Cruel Sea" is another fine listen, or to bring up to date, do watch "Greyhound"... a new movie in similar mode with Tom Hanks.
    Thanks for this! 📻

Have u ever heard of/watched the classic U boat film called Das Boat? It's a German film made about 1982? If not please watch its by far the best film of this genre in my opinion! This film Enemy Below is a classic cuz it's a great film of course but also Mitchum and Jurgens were classic actors of there day whereas Das Boat has no stars but the acting and story are truly to be seen. If u don't mind subtitles then watch it and tell me if u liked it, or not?

This is great no girls drama and boring domestics, this is a man thing, doing what men doing best. Killing other men, then having a drink with the enemy - and compare tactics of their hunt. - the twist both captains think the other captain is the prisoner is just perfect. minus 1 point for being predictable in that the germans would loose this dogfight.

Google the 88mm and 110mm they used, firing 12kg minimum weight HE/AP shells, ships plate was like papier machete to these pieces....U boats sank more ships using them than their torpedo stock in their preferred surface action, during the early years of WW2. Shells were/are much cheaper than fish but more importantly they carried far more, thus extending a tour.
