    Matt is a noticeably competent, patient and calming instructor. Perfect for a student like Kim who has 'quick' emotions. It is a great match and a marvelous window into real-world flight training relatable to us all. It will be interesting to follow her solo efforts in future vids. Thanks for sharing the experience.

    I've recently taught my daughter to drive, and one of the most important things I had to keep telling her is to have a short memory when making mistakes. Recognize the mistake so you don't repeat it, but immediately move on because the vehicle is still moving and needs to be controlled. None of those mistakes were life threatening, don't let them rattle you, move on quickly to the next thing. You're doing great!

    I appreciate this type of video a lot. This is what the real learning process looks like. It's won't always be perfect, but a lot is learned for both the student and the viewer. These are exactly the issues I'll have when I get to that point of my training.

    Kim from first solo to checkride is the fun part of training as I look back, however, it will bring roller coaster moments for tasks you thought you had down. Every new task brings deterioration to core tasks. You are doing great, don't beat yourself up.

    Kim, I loved the part where Matt covered up your instruments, and made you rely on your instincts. Over the course of this series I've become convinced that your instincts are really good - it's just a matter of convincing your brain of that fact! It showed on the go-around too - you had the right instinct in the moment. All you really need is to get enough repetition with your checklists and procedures in the aircraft to make them habit, and it'll all gel. As someone who learned IFR flying before VFR, I know how hard it is to "uncomplicate" your headspace and just FLY when you are so used to everything following a procedure. You'll get it, don't you worry!

    Great job Kim. The speed control and the altitude control looked good to me. Your getting it. Very smart move on your part to go around on that first attempt. If it doesn’t look good, just go around. Matt is a really good instructor. Has the patience a new student needs. Please keep these flight videos coming.

    Lesson: The moment she had to do a Go Around that very first time, You can see the frustration. Then there comes the compounding effect. You can tell she's a confident person, but still kept thinking about the first "mistake ". Great instructor.

    Confidence comes from practice/repetition. I remember being anxious and my legs shaking doing some things for the first time in flight training. She's got the added weight of doing that in front of 113,000 subscribers!

    Another step closer! The confident airmenship is really taking ahold. There will always be little things here and there. Flying is not static but fuild and the basic "Fly the Plane" is showing out of you 100%!!! A+!!! 👍🏻👍🏻😎😎😎

    Kim, as you most likely know because we are watching this after it all happened.... after the cross country flights, and a few not so good landings when you are solo, it all clicks and you are suddenly a confident pilot. No doubt you are there right now. It has been great to watch your journey as I go through this process myself and am now sitting days before checkride. THANK YOU for being vulnerable so that we all can cheer you on, see the process of learning to fly from start to finish and most of all, to show us all we were not born perfect like Baron Pilot. 🙂

    Awesome work Kim, that go around proves you are very close to ready at this point imo. Kudos to Matt for letting that develop. Finally nice job Kim not giving up the controls when you were struggling. Although throw a bone to your instructor once in awhile when things are going well and let him have a landing.

    I really appreciate your sharing this series of videos. They seem to be providing an experiential overview of the path to a PPL. Unlike written narrative, these provide a literal "here and now, this is how it is" that seems superior to reading about it. Thank You.

I know it's easy to say and harder to do, but try to relax and not worry so much when you don't get something just right -- it will come!     The first time I overshot final was when I flew into a new (to me) and VERY much smaller runway, ie 50X2100 versus my home 150X5000 runway. The visual illusion had me flying WAY to close on downwind. Left me unstabilised and had to go around. Was Brown County a smaller strip? The videos are great. Keep grinding Kim!

    Centerline between legs not under prop helps line up. Walk rudder only dynamically and proactively or at least just rudder reactively to bracket (we are better when we move) or find (flat feet but at least no aileron) centerline. We don't want to turn so use only the anti-turn control, the rudder, to yaw (fine tune) hold (constant walk) or find (correct to) the centerline. Start by balancing a broom on her hand at home. Same concept. Tail waggers have little problem maintaining longitudinal alignment. Wing waggers end up going around.

      Rudder, mounted on the centerlne rather than well off centerline like the ailerons, is true yaw and not untrue adverse yaw. The nose is going the wrong way initially when she turns the yoke to bank back toward the centerline. This is disruptive. I jam my thumb up against one side of the yoke. When the student tries to make a coordinated turn, hits my thumb, and looks over at me, I tell her to walk the rudder only to bracket the target and keep the wing level. If that doesn't work I have here put her hands in her lap and walk the rudder while I use the yoke for elevator deceleration. I do not bank as I don't want to turn.

    Kim, look closely at Mr Cool during that go -around, he was not going to get involved, it was all you and all on you. He trusts you. It does not matter why you go-around or how many you do. History only records the one you didn't do when you should have.

    Thanks for sharing this amazing experience. Not going on the Kim’s mistakes. I did a lot more… but when I see this type of situations confirm what I been thinking/talking about the “solo”. I know soloed is an amazing experience but, I think is overvalued. Not really sure how many students go up solo are really prepared. I would wait longer until they have more tools and confidence.

    I think it is interesting that Matt is teaching to use foreflight from the beginning. While it is a great tool, I think it is also important to know how to use a paper sectional in case of failure, and only after proficiency is obtained, using foreflight with paper and GPS, etc

      We go over paper charts and core fundamentals extensively. My training looks a little different than most as I had extensive cockpit time before doing training and already had knowledge of ForeFlight.

    I offer this in the kindest manner. Kim should re-evaluate whether or not she is learning to fly for the right reasons. Her mind is NOT on her flying as evidenced by the numerous mistakes that she is making while the instructor merely offers excuses as to why these mistakes are "OK". They are not especially this far into her training. They can lead to an eventual catastrophe, especially when you hear her say things like "losing it".

    No worry’s Kim. My window on a Navaho popped open once on a check flight. Just fly the airplane and wait for a safe opportunity to correct the problem or just land the plane! It happens to most of us at one time or another, just try not to make it a habit. 🫠
