I want to take this time to thank you guys for the tip on thr 5th gear switch to a TDI 5th on my gas golf. I remove the gears using a puller and install it on my gearbox and the RPM and fuel economy it's much better thanks again.
I have ripped apart many of these transmissions and have done the swaps. Heat is required and can be done with a propane torch, not as hard as it looks or sounds. Will get smokey with the oil burning but super easy job. Look how you take it apart and reverse the operation to put it back together...have water present and watch the needle bearings with the plastic housing. If you can do your brakes, you can do this.
Doing this while the transmission is still on the car? Taking off gears with a fricking torch and hoping they will work again after they cooled down? What is today's date, is it April the first?
canadacatalyst I'd still say you need to be at least fairly experienced to accomplish that without messing it up - especially when it's still installed in the car.
You do not need a torch, that is just waste gas, and you may screw up the plastic needle bearing. Just use a small puller, the gears are not "pressed' on they go on a spline.
+canadacatalyst I just bought a 5th gear set from y'all last week. I'll try it with a puller 1st to see if its possible without heat then I'll use the tourch if not. Thanks for the gear set. I have been looking for weeks.
Who else finds it funny that in every video of this ppl just yank on the gear selector untill it pops off and the dogs fly every where when you could just press all the dogs down at the same time and the selector comes of like butter

what size puller did you use?

Even if your getting a ratio gear of .8 or more? "BROKE" mentions some modifications for it but not sure if required??

You can do it as long as you take your time to be careful not to get bearing race hot....
canadacatalyst "Take your time" with a torch and "not to get xyz too hot" also sounds like a contradiction to me...
Seegal Galguntijak it is pressed on and the point it just heat enough to expand it enough to slide off...

hopefully yall are still around but how did you install the gears, same thing, heat and slide them back on?? Or gentle persuasion and a mallet?
They normally just slide back on
That's the size of the 5th gear on a diesel compared to a gas?
VW t5 1.9 TDI Gearbox ? O2z Code ?
If I'm changing mine to a .87 gear ratio do I need to do any other adjustments or can I just put the gears in an call it good? Thanks!
Can you use a bearing heater to heat the gear?
Absolutely!
bad idea putting them hot gears in cold water could crack them

Aelx Kevan so you have experience doing such a thing? lol
they are pressed on.
the splines keep it from turning...

Why didn't you use a pulley puller? Not everyone has a torch....camera work could be improved. Thx!
Do you have a trans for an 07 jetta with an auto. My buddy is looking. Probably cost way too much to ship it to the states though
How much does it cost to get the 5th gear tdi I am in Bc

I’ve been told you may lose the use of cruise control after this 5th gear change, did you ?
cruise control has nothing to do with manual gear box..
please once again videos for gear box from Volkswagen card
You don't want to know what I've seen on the way to this video!!

My nails have been cut really that's cool
