@@prettycoke it's not like a Sex on the Beach where there's 14 different recipes. There's only one way to make a proper Mai Tai: 1oz lime juice .5oz Orange Curacao .5oz Orgeat .25oz Simple syrup 2oz of dark rum, either a blend of Jamaican & Martinique, or a variation.
I like this hotel version of the “ Mai Tai”. It’s definitely the most common. As pure, delicious and refreshing is the original version is, this is the one I’m used to. I’ll definitely be making this one. Another advantage of this version is you don’t have to use pricier, less common rums and ingredients. Although I might play with the recipe with some.
Light rum? Amaretto? Orange & pineapple juice? Grenadine? Dark float? No lime juice? (Not to mention the glass, ice, and garnish...) Trader Vic is rolling in his grave.
¾fresh Lime juice ¼demerara syrup ¼orgeat ½Pierre Ferrand ½Wray&Nephew ½Appleton 8 1Plantation Original Dark, shake with ice 8-10 seconds pour into chilled double rocks garnish lime husk and spanked mint.
This is about as far from Vic's Mai Tai as Spam is from Filet Mignon. Read Martin Cate's "Smuggler's Cove" Tiki Cocktail history/recipe book to see how to make the true "classic" Mai Tai.
Dude a mai tai doesn't even have amaretto, light rum, triple sec, oj, grenadine and pineapple juice. It's supposed to be dark rum replacing the light rum, almond syrup instead of amaretto, and orange Curacao instead to triple sec. There's also supposed to be lime juice instead of the pineapple juice, oj, and grenadine.
The host said "there are many versions of this drink", as according to the history it's creation is claimed by two different bartenders who have recipes that vary from one another. What separates the men from the boys is... Taste. You have to taste the variations to choose which one works best. For instance, the humble Rusty Nail is basically a mix of scotch whiskey and Drambuie served in a iced rock glass, but the proportions of each affect the final product. The whiskey used makes a real difference too. My introduction to this drink was half and half Drambuie and Jonnie Walker Red over ice cubes. Not brilliant, because the JW Red was harsh and stiff, and only behaved as time passed due to the dilution from the ice melting. Substitute that for The Famous Grouse or, Glenfiddich (👍) for example. Then there's the ice shape - cubes or crushed? Then there's the level of dryness - more or less Drambuie? Do you rub the rim of the glass with lemon zest? Do you muddle a piece of lemon zest first to make the drink drier and the aromas less sweet? As mixologists, you have to be part artists and part chemists, because your techniques and knowledge of ingredients create the final product. So, I'm going to say that because of time and money, recipes can and should be adapted, where the original recipe cannot be recreated or nailed down, as your ultimate job is to make a good drink. So, yes where you can make authentic recipes but don't be a hostage to fortune. Train your palate, experiment, and learn. Be creative. @@BigHenFor this is basically a sweet TGI Fridays drink. that isn't a Mai Tai. Its a drink for people who hate the taste of alcohol. There's no need for the long winded dissertation.
@@BigHenFor Bar Tails and Cocktails huh? Come on, this recipe is a poor and lazy attempt which takes nothing from the original and is very similar to their "Hurricane" recipe, (which contains vodka). This channel is the worst to learn from. But its a good trainwreck.
Orgeat is cheaper than amaretto and is what this drink actually calls for. ¾ oz fresh lime ¼ oz rich demerara syrup ¼ oz orgeat ½ oz Pierre Ferrand dry curaçao 2 oz blended aged rum (El Dorado works very well) Combine with crushed ice and shake well. Pour into double rocks, garnish lime husk/ mint.
I've had several mai tai in my short lifespan, some were blue, some were white, some where red, and now you tell me there's an orange one too ? Can't barman around the world just stick to minor variations please ?
This is NOT EVEN REMOTELY CLOSE to Vic Bergeron's original Trader Vic recipe(s) for the Mai Tai. This is a horrid recipe, in fact. Invoking Trader Vic's name, and then providing this recipe, borders on an outright falsehood. A more authentic recipe would be 1.5 oz Jamaican gold rum, 0.5 oz dark rum, 1.0 oz fresh lime juice, 0.5 oz orange curacao (or Cointreau, in a pinch), and 0.5 oz of high-quality Orgeat syrup (e.g., Giffard). Shake, strain, serve with crushed ice in a large rocks glass, and garnish with a generous cluster of fresh mint and a spent lime shell. The crushed ice is key, together with the Orgeat flavoring and garnishes, to making an "authentic" flavored Mai Tai. Any recipe that uses grenadine, Amaretto, or a fruit juice other than fresh lime juice, is a BAD RECIPE for this drink. Trader Vic's original recipe used a 17-year-old Wray & Nephew aged Jamaican rum, which has not been available for more than 60 years. The combination of a modern Jamaican gold rum and a smaller amount of a dark rum is meant to mimic the original flavor profile. Recipes you may find which include an added floater of high-proof rum are are NOT the "original" Trader Vic recipe. Trader Vic, however, would add this upon request for guests who wanted it, but even today, this is not the standard way of producing the drink at the few remaining Trader Vic's locations.
Do yourself a favor, find a different school to learn how to make Mai Tai. This one is perfect to fool the tourists, but this one is everything but Mai Tai. BTW, don't believe the sales pitch, there are no different versions of the Mai Tai. There is only one Mai Tai, and this certainly is not the one.
This is pretty foul interpretation and not a classic. It’s just over sweetened and just looks like a terrible concoction. Very typical of modern American dive bars. The original is more simplified, exceptional flavour, and all round enjoyable. And before I get hate, I know this video is out of date, but I still see this fake Mai Thai being made still. (I can say this as I have been a cocktail bartender for 10 years
Auwe! Dont ever get off a plane in Hawaii, Fiji Tahiti, Samoa, or anywhere off the west coast of Fkn Yanks ville! Embarassing! Trader Vic wouldve fired you
yes on the pineapple, no on the orange. and wheres the lime juice? sorry, no sour to counteract that sweet, only 19 yr old females w no drinking experience will say its great
This is such a perfect parody of how to bastardize the Mai Tai that I'm not upset in the slightest
The best thing about this video is that is has made sure I never need to waste my time watching anything else on this channel.
Why? What's wrong? There are so many variations of different cocktails...what makes this one so horrible?

This looks truly terrible
For you to say that this thing was invinted by Trader Vic is a crime against humanity. This bears no resemblance to his creation nor legit tiki.
have you met jeffrey morgenthaler?
Hahahaha!
I can't speak for Ryan, but if I were a betting man I'd say something with rum, orgeat, curacao, and lime...
Wrong! Wrong! Wrong! You are totally out of the wrold!
Thats not a mai tai...
WHAT is the ORIGINAL form of it!!...
It looks very refreshing.
I would like to replace the Amaretto with a less expensive drink. What should I use?
amaretto is very cheap as it is.
almond syrup
Use Orgeat, it's cheaper and what is actually used in fucking mai tais
Orgeat is cheaper than amaretto and is what this drink actually calls for.
¾ oz fresh lime
¼ oz rich demerara syrup
¼ oz orgeat
½ oz Pierre Ferrand dry curaçao
2 oz blended aged rum (El Dorado works very well)

Nothing amaretto is not in a mai tai
Well actually the whole recipe has nothing to do with the mai tai
that drink is called a planters punch (without the almond liqueur and triple sec). Definitely not a MAi TAi
This recipe is killing me! Atleast he's not reading from a card this time
I've had several mai tai in my short lifespan, some were blue, some were white, some where red, and now you tell me there's an orange one too ?
Can't barman around the world just stick to minor variations please ?
This is what happens when people who do not bake make a cake for you.
I had a bartender put the grenadine on the bottom. It was weird.
I bet. There is zero grenadine in a Mai Tai. That is weird as hell.
Am I the only one wondering why he’s using a jigger and a speed pourer?
i thought there is not pine apple juice in a mai tai!? just saw a other video and he said its not god with pine apple juice
That is correct. There is no pineapple juice. There are no standards here. Worst place to get cocktail recipes on the tube imo.
What's a lecure?
Something they made up. Just like this mess.
Please open a book and check the right recipe lol
Thanks ❤❤❤❤
This is literally the exact recipe I have been looking for. It's like the way they make them at the Japanese steakhouse we go to. Thank you.
nice catch...

Grenadine does not go in it

That is ok, but it is more like the Marriott Mai Tia. Trader Vic lime juice, Orange squirt, Ogreat, dark aged rum
I went to the beach this year and this was my favorite drink, best drink for the beach by far.
Raul RomeoTV Margarita rocks. With Salt.
But I doubt this is how they made your mai Tai. That drink looks like something that would rot your teeth and give you a splitting headache
I can't tell if this is a joke or not. I hope so. That thing is hideous and nothing like a Mai Tai.
This is absolutely the worst mai tai recipe that I've ever saw

sorry, not mine...

And it looks delicious
wtf is that!!!
Not a fan of a mai tai made with those ingredients. So sugery and sweet. To me that's not really a mai Tai. But each to his own.
The recipe text @ the end does not include Pineapple juice. Otherwise a good video.
Guys calm down, this is a B.S recipe for bars that don’t have orgeat. Most people that order this drink don’t know a real mai tai anyway
It's easy to make orgeat, and all bars should have it.
