He must be keen if you’ve got him on a pig farm! I’m a year older myself and have been working on our farm for the past few years, as well as doing harvest work on other farms. but pig farming isn’t really one for me. Each to their own though, and anyone willing to get there hands dirty is a step above most in my eyes. I wish him good luck for the future.

Greetings from the Canadian prairies. Combines are about 20,000 parts rolling along the field in loose formation. There are more chains and belts to go wrong than most people can imagine. The variable speed, belt pulleys are known to get thinner over time and crack from the wear and pressure on them ( caused by the belts ) from changing speed under full load over time.

I thought I recognised the roundabout and then I saw the field name on the combines screen, breakers yards are great.
ON a tunnel job in Hong Kong the centre shaft of the tunnelling machine snapped, a new one would need to be cast. One was found on a machine in I think it was Brazil so it was stripped out and shipped by airfreight to HK, they in turn received the newly cast one.
Combines have so many working parts and the harvest won't wait if their not. But good to see that out of the way grease nipple had been greased. Those are the ones my old boss would check and so I greased the nipples in an order so as not to miss one.
Thanks for posting Harry and you lot stay safe you hear.

I'm surprised that so many relative!y small farms find running a combine economically viable. When Harry explained the economics of the farm the cost of financing the combine was a fairly significant part of the expenses. Here in Normandy the combines are mainly owned by agricultural contractors. They are hired by groups of farmers who then get together to convoy the collection of the harvest to each individual farm as it is collected. It seems to work well, the contractor can maintain the machine in his own workshop and afford to replace it every few years. Harry's is an 09 and is going to need more and more maintenance. He already replaced most of the belts this year to avoid costly delays and still had 2 breakdowns. Thanks Harry for this channel most or all of my understanding of farming comes from enjoying watching your clear and concise reports.

    • @harrysfarmvids

Yes it is. I'll explain in a harvest round-up video special in a few weeks time but the combine is GPS linked and produces a coloured map showing the grain yield variation across every field, which is a really useful management tool and pretty clever too!

Combines are Heath Robinson looking machines under the covers. It was good to see you can get parts from breakers yards, although it is a surprise new parts cannot he had overnight. If urgent why not UPS or Fedex, after all if the combine is down it can be critical.

Well, that's the way to go: sustainable farming by using already existing and available parts from not too far away... Quicker too! If the part would have been transported all the way from Germany by lorry and boat/traintunnel, it would have left a much bigger carbon footprint, now wouldn't it? Good job!

It is now six weeks and counting since Warwickshire had any decent sunshine...
