I think I understand why Taiki is so hard on himself, and why it's so hard for people to watch it happen. He's the protagonist of a romance/sports anime, so we kinda know where it's going. We know he'll get the girl, and we know he'll be incredible at his sport by the end. But from Taiki's perspective, he's constantly surrounded by incredible senpai and due to wanting to compete in nationals as a first year, he's constantly punching above his weight. Add to that the fact that he's getting started somewhat later than the other national athletes, and his somewhat self-depreciating stance makes perfect sense. There's no way he could say anything like, "I'll beat Haryu senpai" and mean it without having zero self awareness, because that's the actual gap between him and his contemporaries. That's not cause Taiki's bad, but because he won't give himself the excuse of them being older or more experienced. He wants to get good enough to beat them NOW. Not a year from now, not 2 years from now but right here, right now. So ironically, his self-depreciation is actually tied to his insane desire to get better and eventually win. I can confirm as a manga reader, the author does have a lot to say on exactly this subject, and I won't spoil anything, but I'll end with this: There's a world of difference between someone who puts themselves down to feel better about never being able to win, and someone who puts themselves down to remind themselves how much further they've got to go. That's what I think anyway.
