This is a beautiful and wonderful song. The lyrics to this song reminds me of the lyrics to a pome written by the American fictional author Bret Harte. It was staged in Newport, Rhode Island in the early 1900s when he saw an apparition of a beautiful young lady waltzing around the ballroom. As she waltzed beneath the candle lit crystal chandeliers the sweet fragrance of French perfume filled the air. He longed to call out to her as she disappeared into the fragrance of the night. I love this song it is so romantic and powerful. French perfume was a highly sought after commodity and commanded a very high price.
Aidah Di Leoni If I'm not mistaken, this French Perfume is referring to the smell of rum and/or cigar smoke, which would make sense if he is indeed a smuggler as the song states.
It also states that he picked up perfume along with the cigars and rum, the line is pretty quick so its easy to miss. the song is referring to a notorious smuggling route in eastern canada. St Pierre is a small island very close to Newfoundland's Burin Peninsula, which includes the towns of Fortune and Spanish Room, mentioned in the song.
St Pierre is a French island. Smuggling alcohol from it became especially popular during the 1920s. they wold take it into canada and down into the states.
This song isn't about piracy, people, it's about a smuggler or "rum runner" They plied the East Coast of Canada and America and the Great Lakes region during Prohibition, dealing in illicit booze, tobacco, drugs and other contraband and there is still an illegal trade in pot and tobacco to this day. Now can you imagine Disney making a Pirates of The Great Lakes movie? Now that would be fun!
The song actually mentions the region its set in. Saint Pierre and Miquelonis a group of French islands within about 15 km of Newfoundland. And yes, it close proximity did make it an infamous smuggling route back in the day
Just a note on the lyrics- I think it's "50 klicks", that is, military slang for kilometers or kilometers per hour, rather than an onomatopoeia. Thank you for posting this!
It's Canadian, the band Great Big Sea is known for performing traditional Newfoundland folk songs in addition to their own material. St Pierre is a French island that's very close to Newfoundland's Burin Peninsula (which includes the towns of Fortune and Spanish Room mentioned in the song) and so would be an easy smuggling route. In this case though, our smuggler is spotted by the mounties (royal canadian mounted police), and crashes into the rocks trying to escape.
So unlike all the other people who got here through some fanfic i got here through an entirely different fanfic which mentioned chemical workers song and I explored from there. :/
Just a misspelling. Saint-Pierre is the capital of a group of french islands off the coast of Newfoundland. They're very close to the Burin Peninsula, including the towns of Fortune and Spanish Room mentioned in the song making it a notorious smuggling route back in the day.
100,000 Subs, No Content dude you really need to get a life they’re just referring to a dumb anime video that’s popular with this song it’s njot hard to figure out, no need to sound like a broken record

J'ai adoré! Et je connais cette chanson depuis plus de dix ans maintenant! Bravo!

50 klicks is Commonwealth English for 50 kilometres per hour
This makes me want to be on a pirate ship while sword fighting some murderous mermaids
This sounds like it could have been in a late 90s early 2000s Scooby-Doo movie
Damn this brings me back when ever I go to newfoundland :D
playing this song in a kitchen party and other songs
I listened to this all the time in PEI the
Maritimes are amazing
Not to split hairs, but I think it's supposed to be spelled "klicks" when referred to kilometers or kilometers per hour. Great video!
I wish the song was on Spotify
It is now! I was really surprised to find it, but it's there 🤷♂
One of my fav GBS songs!
Just a note on the lyrics- I think it's "50 klicks", that is, military slang for kilometers or kilometers per hour, rather than an onomatopoeia. Thank you for posting this!

I can't remember how I found this song. It was years ago though, I remember that much.
Hailey Vance my dad used to sing this to me when I was younger. It’s been years and this song really brings me back.
You've red my mind 👀
I’m honestly surprised by the amount of people who think this is an English song,
50 klicks, not 50 clicks
Ohhh, I thought they'd mixed up "clicks" with "knots," I didn't know there was a different spelling
sounds like the beginning of an anime
Yea it does.
((I know it has a opening already)) either fairy tail or one piece
Shadow Darkleaf that would work pretty well
LordDrakoArakis could make it happen.
its so annoying that i have heard this tune before but not on this song and i cant figure out on what other song i have heard it xd
Same!
i think its set to the same tune of Hello Darkness my old friend by Simon and Garfunkel just a bit sped up

Just a misspelling. Saint-Pierre is the capital of a group of french islands off the coast of Newfoundland. They're very close to the Burin Peninsula, including the towns of Fortune and Spanish Room mentioned in the song making it a notorious smuggling route back in the day.
