It was staged in Newport, Rhode Island in the early 1900s when he saw an apparition of a beautiful young lady waltzing around the ballroom. As she waltzed beneath the candle lit crystal chandeliers the sweet fragrance of French perfume filled the air. He longed to call out to her as she disappeared into the fragrance of the night. I love this song it is so romantic and powerful. French perfume was a highly sought after commodity and commanded a very high price.
