  • I will try to add underwater macro footage of all major species of aquatic insects important to us, Flyfishers. List • Fly Tying Entomology R...
„Sow Bugs“,“ Water Slaters“, „Water Hoglice“, „Water Hoglouse“, „Water Louse“ sometimes „Cress Bugs“, French: "Aselle, cloporte d’eau", German: "Wasserassel", all such flattering names for aquatic crustaceans found worldwide. Most common and important of Sow Bugs species is no doubt Asellus aquaticus Linnaeus, 1758
Freshwater aquatic isopods are common in water rich with organic materials. They crawl slowly over rocks, logs, and other submerged objects. Different species prefer different habitats, including standing water, streams of various types, caves, and rivers. Many hide under rocks and among debris at the bottoms of pools.

I don't know how big these creatures are but your camera work makes those scuds look massive.

Vermehren sich deine Asellus aquaticus in deinem Aquarium? Ich habe sie seit 6 Monaten, und ich sehe immer nur adulte Asseln und Weibchen ohne Eier

When you put them on the surface, they stay stuck in the surface tension, just with their very back, can't go down underwater, they came from Asia probably, but no one know for sure.

Cool footage Bret, I think it calls for an R rating, no? ;o) Just kidding. I've read some on the subject in the various fishing mags and seen some cool patterns for the "coupled" critters on youtube. I've only tied and fished one pattern, I think it was Sheck's Cress Bug, just trimmed rabbit dubbing, never had any luck with it. What's yours?
I think it was a limestone creek, because that's the creek's name, there's a lot of shrimp. I was fishing a Usual in a fast run and when I sank it the rainbows came out from under the brushy banks and struck. I noticed the shrimp had a similar color as the Usual, maybe it had a similar profile under the water too. Maybe it just looked like some buggy "fast food" in that run, but it worked and I've always had luck with that Usual fished under the surface.

Hi Joe, I like "Ray Charles Sow Bug" or "UV Eddie Vedder" partially for their names of course :) We don't have many pure trout waters here with Sowbugs. These bugs are from one big tailwater here. There is much more of olive scuds, like 10:1. And if you go deep I'm not sure trouts will know what they are after... Scud or Sowbug. The best time usually occurs when they rise the flow ( due to hydroelectric power). Everything is dislodged in the stream.. but on this particular river, it's going from 0 Cubic meters per second to a 150 or so... Very fast and hard to fish, but nice Brook trouts down there... Have a nice weekend Buddy.

@@bkbretislavkaspar-flyfishi1502 RC sow bug I know. UV Eddie Vedder I don't, except for the Pearl Jam variety. You have a good week end too!
