Gladiator 2 would be lucky to even be nominated for Best Picture (it won't). The last time a director won for a film not nominated for Best Picture was in 1929. And since then, I'd argue the vast majority if not all Best Director winners directed a film that was at least in strong contention to win Best Picture. If Gladiator 2 manages to sneak in a nomination, it will surely be in ninth or tenth place.
Anne Thompson is the smart one here. I think Ridley is getting snubbed, the directing branch is extremely snobbish. The points for Ridley are more like points for why it can get a Best Picture nomination.
1. Brady Corbet (The Brutalist) 2. Sean Baker (Anora) 3. Edward Berger (Conclave) 4. Denis Villeneuve (Dune II) 5. RaMell Ross (Nickel Boys) I could only see the International voters trying to get Luca Guadagnino (Challengers) or Coralie Fargeat (The Substance) in as alternatives. I don't get why these pundits think Ridley Scott has a chance to even get in for Gladiator II. It's not critically well received and audiences seem to find it to be an unnecessary sequel.
You have to be smoking some wild stuff to even think that Scott is close to a nomination, let alone a win (I say this as someone who loved Gladiator 2)
All of these people are completely clueless of the race and the younger experts have better analysis of the race every single time, only Joyce and Chris or the Oscar Experts actual provide valuable assessments if the race, especially Joyce
Ridley Scott? That movie was horrible, literally people were laughing in the theatre at how bad the dialogue was, bad cgi used, Paul Mescal couldnt carry the film, he looked so tiny compared to the other actors and when he’s on the horse at the end looks like he’s in middle school, bad casting choices, Denzel’s character was beneath him to play.
Anne is the queen of everything, need her to talk more and Clayton should not be in the room, sorry. He always follows the vibes and predicts all the wrong things. His last Oscar predictions should have disqualified him from being invited.
As someone who’s been following most of these pundits for many years, I’m baffled to watch this. Scott for Gladiator 2?? The disdain for Nickel Boys? Geez… only Thompson can be (slightly) saved. Well, I guess that’s what you can expect from someone who enjoyed lazy, corny Juror #2. I’ve never been an ageist, but maybe these people are too old for this 🤦🏾♂️.
"Experts" these are just film journalists who can't divorce subjective like of a film from what will actually happen at the end of the day. Ridley is NOT getting nominated, come on.
Ridley Scott won't be even nominated. These guys are so clueless.
Ridley Scott has no chance winning Best Director😂

Man, Anne Thompson is way better at this than the rest of these guys...

She’s not great either lmao 😂

Clayton Davis might be one of THE WORST predictors in the past 20 years, no hyperbole

Gladiator 2 will be lucky to be nominated for any award
The guy from Variety is yet to predict one thing correctly. Year after year he just makes things up.
Most of these predictions are a joke. Especially Clayton Davis who always makes stupid predictions. I don't know how this is his job?
Denis and it’s not even close.
Gladiator 2 was poorly directed, I don’t think there’s a chance he gets nominated

I can’t believe these people get paid having no insight or seeming knowledge about what makes film great, they are Oscar historians at best.

Clayton and Scott are on crack. Anne is the GOAT.
Ridley Scott for me would be lucky if he even got nominated
Gladiator II should not be happening in this category at all.
Stop with this Ridley nonsense. I love a lot of his work but he won't even be nominated.
Anne is the queen of everything, need her to talk more and Clayton should not be in the room, sorry. He always follows the vibes and predicts all the wrong things. His last Oscar predictions should have disqualified him from being invited.
Scott, best director? In his dreams
the definition of hot take lol
anne thompson is the best
Hahahahahaha Gold Derby are now comedians

The members of Academy are old too 🤷🏻♀️

Lmao
Gladiator 2???? It was a mess. 2.5 hours I'll never get back.
Wicked, that’s it
