    As someone that watches a lot of LTT, I've seen how much Linus emphasizes the fidget spinner aspect for fun. I think for people like me familiar with that context, the joke is more obvious than for someone that doesn't watch the LTT content that hits on that aspect

    • @GSBarlev
      @GSBarlev 21 วันที่ผ่านมา +13

      I haven't watched LTT in about a year, and I had no idea he'd even made a second screwdriver, but even then it was super clear from Jeff's context. The problem (IMO) is that Jeff's wit is dryer than 2012 Missouri, and a lot of people just don't pick up on that.

      @@GSBarlev So you are telling me that the entire joke is only an issue to tourists? Aight, got it.
      I say that because even though I struggle to catch onto cues, being a fan of LTT myself made me very aware that the fidget spinner joke was, well, a joke. Linus literally runs it on a stopwatch, live on WAN Show, plus Jeff's humor has lots to be expected, including its dryness.
      So anyone willing to comment against the joke either arrived at the video to defend Linus without ever watching Linus, or arrived to attack Jeff without ever watching Jeff.

      No, it’s just that it was odd how a large part of the video was about it being a fidget spinner. It’s like we get it but it’s most of the video
      Saying it’s a fidget spinner is just a one time joke, but no now the ifixit one has a fidget spinner, now we’re looking at the gyroscopic stabilisation, but not actually just using it
      The problem was the joke got old with minutes left of the fidget spinner jokes left. It felt like an April fools type of video
      Just because you disagree it doesn’t mean they’re dense
      I’m not going to say it was outright bad, Jeff can do what he wants in his videos, but it was a situation where I ended up in the comments to see if other people were confused with the emphasis on fidget spinners

    😰 I definitely messed up here. A bunch of my friends and co-workers refer to the spinning tops on screwdrivers, precision or standard, as fidget spinners. So I made the mistake of thinking that you meant that between the LTT and the iFixIt drivers that the iFixIt didn't have a rotating top. It probably didn't help that I listened to the video while doing house work instead of watching it so I may have missed some visual cues. That's on me. Perhaps I'm a weird south paw, but I don't use these precision drivers as you've demonstrated:
    1: insert driver bit into screw head.
    2: rest palm on the 'spinner' to keep the bit from falling out, which frees the fingers for turning the driver in small increments, like a ratchet.
    3: voila'! I've finished screwing, using only one hand, while holding the part in the other.
    I've always thought that was the whole point for having a spinning top on the driver. 🤷‍♂

    Linus made a big point about the fidget feature, because a ton of people love to fidget with the larger LTT driver and its ratcheting mechanism. They very much had making it a fidget toy and a screwdriver in mind from the start. This is something the LTT audiance seems to really be into, and I am too. But unlike the LTT screwdriver, the bit driver is more of a fun gimmick for their audiance than something you would recommend as "the best precision driver" or anything like that. It's good, but the price is high for what it does. It's not too high for what it IS, but it's high for what utility it brings. That said, I think the full kit for $50 is high but not crazy, considering that the LTT bits and case are actually a lot more innovative than the driver itself.

    Your communication was fine Jeff, fidget spinner was a JOKE, I think most of us got that. (I was one of the people who pointed out the Mako had a different driver since you didn't, but that's also fine.) The issue is that there is Internet Drama because this is LTT.

    My harbor freight Quinn brand 87 pc 'professional electronics repair kit' has an all metal driver with a free spinning bearing on the bottom, similar to LMG's. It weighs about 3g more than my Mako driver and slightly longer, which my gorilla hands actually prefer.
    It's usually $35 but I got it on sale. Quality is suspiciously good and includes tools similar to iFixit's Jimmy, spudgers, etc. The bit set is basically a 64 piece clone of the Mako. I highly recommend it above these for the price.

    I think I'm in the camp of "got the joke, but found it disingenuous due to missing context/after you kept going." It *could* have been funny, had it fallen into either "joke in a serious review" or "parody review" territory, but for me it landed in "I'm pushing one over the other so I'm going to harp on this one detail even if it's silly" territory.
    For instance, it didn't seem communicated at all that any of the other precision drivers *had* a spinny top? So it seemed like you were going "spinny top vs no spinny top." With that context of "everything has a spinny top," it makes more sense.
    What I gleaned from the summary of the end of the video was "The only thing that the LTT precision driver adds is a fidget spinner, and that isn't worth $10." which rubbed me the wrong way as well, and solidified the "disingenuous" feeling i was getting.

    • @bzuidgeest
      @bzuidgeest 21 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Why did it rub you the wrong way? Can't handle criticism of Linus and his tool xerox?
      The bearing is useless, except as a children's toy. A simple spinning top is cheaper and works just as well.
      You can't screw at the spinner speed, fiction alone would prevent that.

      @@bzuidgeest The og video was definitely disingenuous and seemed half baked at best. It was a huge misstep on Jeff's part and not posting this on his main channel with the og video doesn't restore much confidence in his content. Almost half the video is spent just trying to make a (very bad) joke of a feature that many people find very useful while masquerading as a genuine comparison of two competing products. On top of that Jeff compares LTT's driver against the cheaper plastic cap iFixit driver instead of the aluminum version which also has the metal bearing type endcap. Although both drivers compete in the same space, its not exactly an apples to apples comparison and it just makes it feel like that version of the iFixit driver was intentionally ignored just so this ridiculous joke could be included. Yes, many drivers have caps that spin but moving from a plastic on plastic spinner to one that uses a bearing is a night and day difference. The bearing version doesn't bind up under pressure like the plastic ones and it can last years longer than a plastic one under heavy use, I've owned and used the same iFixit Aluminum Precision Bit driver for over 8 years now and would not hesitate for a single second to replace it with the exact same one even if it cost $40 for the driver alone with how much easier it has made my job over those eight years. The bearing version with the heavier metal body also spins much easier and freely even when removing or installing screws allowing most of the screws to be installed or removed with a single flick of the handle while just resting your palm on the end cap. If you really want to see how much of a difference that metal bearing makes. Get a plastic spinning version and a bearing version, Find a laptop where screws need to be removed to take off the bottom, then spend 8 hours with each screw driver just removing and reinstalling that bottom plate over and over again. You'll never want to use a plastic driver ever again. Calling the feature a children's toy or making a 6+ minute long video calling it a joke just shows how ignorant you are of the feature and how it improves the usefulness and ease of use of the tool.

      @bzuidgeest 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@stevecole90099 another one of you, get over yourself. It's a screwdriver. If you really worked with the ifixit version for eight years, that only proves that the LTT version is a useless upgrade that can spin faster then friction will let screws turn. Therefore it's over engineered for its purpose. It's something for Linus to squeeze money out of his group of sycophants of which you seem a member.

      @@stevecole90099 Id argue that depends on the person, though. I've used plastic cheap precision screwdrivers and much nicer precision drivers with bearings and for me the difference is negligible. Even when using them for hours at a time unscrewing and rescrewing screws on hardware. For me, the increased cost of the LTT driver isnt worth it.

    • @MisterAnderson91
      @MisterAnderson91 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@mitchk7655 That's kind of the problem though. Jeff clearly comes from the same camp on these, cheap is fine. But he didn't make that clear from the start, and instead did a half-baked comparison and a bunch of jokes about the gimmick being a gimmick while discounting a bunch of real improvements on the case, bit storage, bit design, and other things. Not to mention the egregious error of not even bothering to compare to the actually comparable product. And this is all after doing a proper review of the previous product.
      It's fine to be a "they are all basically the same so just buy the cheap one" person. But it came off in his main vid, as more of an extended insult to people who expected a real review and genuinely care about quality tools and actually do see a difference with them. For 10USD, I'd happily pay for 1% efficiency increase for a tool I might use 5 hours per week for the next 10 years, just for the sake of reducing hand fatigue. Jeff said a light driver is better for him whereas I prefer a better grip and smooth spinning top (which ifixit's better driver offers), but none of that made it to his main video.
      I doubt it was intended but Jeff came off really bad in that video. I think bad enough that it's worth him buying the correct comparison kit and doing a proper review. I think he missed the mark badly and treated people who respect his opinion like fools and wasted their time, when going hard in either direction to serious review or parody/funny joke video would have been preferable.
      I'm kind of disappointed because this is the only review of these that I've bothered to click on, because I value Jeff's insights normally. All to watch him be unable to focus on anything useful and just obsess with a feature that was always a gimmick and likely wasn't a major factor in the higher cost in the first place. An actual review of the benefits, downsides and cost differences would really be desirable at this point. He doesn't have to like it, but at least tell us why, don't announce that you're paying $10 for a fidget spinner top when it clearly goes to many cumulative differences.

    ok so like,, as someone who's currently waiting for the ltt precision to arrive who already has an ifixit kit with the plastic screwdriver and has tried the metal version: i never found myself seriously using the bit storage on the plastic ifixit driver bc it's just too fiddly and not smooth enough. i also have a magnet implanted between my right index and thumb where i hold bits i'm very excited about being able to transfer between my hand and the internal storage. i also find that the plastic just isn't sturdy enough and the rubber is much less grippy than metal ifixit ones i've used, especially since i frequently work on devices with dozens of screws. additionally i frequently find that the magnet just isn't strong enough to pull screws out of holes sometimes and am hoping the ltt to be better at that. lastly i just deeply care about smooth operation without any scratchyness, i'm the type of person who designs and builds my own mechanical keyboards just so i can have it feel exactly right. therefore i don't think any other precision screwdriver would cut it for me and i'm very excited for the upgrade to my kit to arrive. i feel like you're just not very discerning when it comes to precision screwdriver design and should have just not reviewed it if you don't really care about the details.
