The ice on all the lakes in Minnesota is very thin and there has been almost no snow this winter. It looks more like November than the middle of January, the saddest winter in my 57 years.
Part of this likely has to do with the onset of SSW or Sudden Stratospheric Warming event conditions which are a consequence of what are known as either planetary waves or Rossby waves having the right periodicity and amplitude to break and dissipate into the stratosphere within the winter hemisphere, a circumstance which become smore and more likely the weaker the temperature differential between the poles and the equator gets. These events notably cause the polar vortex to split into a dipolar, or higher order multipole configuration, enabling warm air to flow up into the poles from lower latitudes. As a consequence with exception of the polar vortices the temperatures in the winter hemisphere become abnormally warm with all the cold air trapped and concentrated into the vortices that wander through the mid latitudes. Currently one of these vortices is coming in and bringing a deep freeze. Meanwhile up in the arctic polar night warm conditions will cause the ice to continue to melt even in the absence of the Sun.
